Our objective was to investigate the association between parenting style and eating disorder symptoms in patients treated in an intensive ou … im as authoritative. These results emphasize the importance of fathers' role in the eating disorder pathology, a relatively untapped area of research.

INTRODUCTION: The social, language, and behavioral problems that occur with autism suggest that the syndrome affects a functionally diverse and widely distributed set of neural systems. The temporal lobe is an important part of the social brain, and manifests morphological and functional alterations in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). AIM. To describe the relationship between autism, epilepsy and temporal lobe dysfunction.
DEVELOPMENT: Psychopathology is common in children with temporal lobe epilepsy, with over-representation of ASD and unusual disruptive behaviour disorders. Behaviors associ…

Bluetongue (BT) is an insect-transmitted viral disease of wild and domestic ruminants and, occasionally, other species. Amongst domestic livestock, BT is most common in certain breeds of sheep whereas asymptomatic BT virus (BTV) infection of cattle is typical in enzootic regions. BT in cattle can be a feature of specific outbreaks, notably the current epizootic in Europe caused by BTV serotype 8. BTV replicates within mononuclear phagocytic and endothelial cells, lymphocytes and possibly other cell types in lymphoid tissues, the lungs, skin and other tissues. Infected ruminants may exhibit a p

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of perinatal pathology in children exposed to antiretrovirals in perinatal period.
DESIGN: Retrospective observational cohort study.
METHODS: Retrospective observational cohort study. Data collected among uninfected children born to HIV-infected women followed up from 1994 to 2006 in a tertiary Hospital. 220 uninfected children were studied. Factors studied included maternal, obstetrical and pediatric variables.
RESULTS: The most common disorder found among children exposed to antiretroviral drugs was anemia (84%); 6,4% of children had neutropenia and more…

Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative conditions in humans and animals. In this review, we summarize the molecular background of phenotypic variability, relation of prion protein (PrP) to other proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases, and pathogenesis of neuronal vulnerability. PrP exists in different forms that may be present in both diseased and non-diseased brain, however, abundant disease-associated PrP together with tissue pathology characterizes prion diseases and associates with transmissibility. Prion diseases have different etiological background with distinct pathoge…

Actinomycosis is one of the rarest pathologies causing intra-abdominal lump in the normal population. Diagnosis is often difficult because o … excision and or resection of the lumps along with the segment of involved gut with subsequent histopathology revealed these cases as actinomycosis. We report these cases for its extreme rarity and a puzzling pre-operative diagnostic dilemma.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are approximately 22 nucleotide long, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression by binding to the 3'-untranslated region of target mRNAs and also a variety of cellular processes. It has recently been established that dysregulation of miRNA expression can be detected in the majority of human cancers. A variety of high-throughput screening methods has been developed to identify dysregulated miRNA species in tumours. For retrospective clinical studies formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue is the most widely used material.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mi

BACKGROUND: Tau protein is a microtubule-associated protein critical to neuron structure and integrity. The abnormal hyperphosphorylated tau protein AT8 disrupts microtubules, interferes with axonal transport, and is associated with neuron injury in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. The purpose of this study was to assess the presence of tau protein and abnormal tau protein AT8 in human glaucomas and to determine whether abnormal tau protein plays a role in glaucomatous neural degeneration.
METHODS: Sections from 11 surgical eye specimens with glaucoma from elevated intr

Intense physical activity has been reported in patients with eating disorders, and hyperactivity can be found in more than 80% in severe stages. The beginning of food restriction occurs at earlier ages if there is an intense physical activity; body dissatisfaction is more intense among patients who practice exercise; and the presence of intense activity in anorexia nervosa usually precedes to the restrictive diet. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of exercise at the beginning of the eating disorder, and to analyze possible differences in the kind of exercise, according to age,

The lung and intrathoracic lymph nodes taken from 153 persons who had taken from HIV infection at the age of 20 to 32 years, with the development of various infectious diseases were examined. Secondary diseases were of generalized progressive pattern. Among these diseases accompanied by pulmonary lesions tuberculosis, as well as bacterial pneumonias, cytomegalovirus infection, pneumocystic pneumonia, cryptococcosis, and non-tuberculous mycobacterial diseases were most common. Lung tissue reactions at terminal stages of HIV infection were polymorphic, which had been caused by severe immunodefic

This paper presents current knowledge of the biological functions of folic acid, the effects of its deficiency in the organism, as well as the possibilities of its therapeutic use. Folic acid (folate, B9) is a vitamin of special importance in normal cellular functions. Tetrahydrofolate (TH4-folate) is the biologically active form of folic acid. The main role of folic acid in biochemistry is the single-carbon transfer reaction (e.g. transfer of a methyl, methylene, or formyl group). Folic acid is involved in the transformation of certain amino acids as well as in the synthesis of purines and dT

Among the micro-organisms that may affect the respiratory apparatus are the protozoa. The diseases they may give rise to constitute a relatively uncommon group of respiratory ailments with, in the majority of cases, an underlying clinical situation corresponding to states of suppressed immunity (AIDS, transplants, malign haemopathies, corticotherapy, etc.). Other factors, such as visits to endemic areas and immigration, also have to be taken into account. In view of the probable increase in the number of cases and the appearance of new emerging diseases, it is the intention of the present work

Congenital and acquired disorders of the enteric neuromusculature are relatively uncommon in childhood, with the exception of Hirschsprung disease. Despite this, a number of histologically well-defined phenotypes of enteric neuromuscular disease are now recognised in paediatric populations, essentially comprising enteric neuropathies and enteric myopathies. This classification is briefly discussed.

Intestinal malabsorption results from a wide variety of causes, which can most easily be organized into three groups. Maldigestion arises from problems with mixing or with digestive mediators, and includes post-gastrectomy patients and those with deficiencies of pancreatic or intestinal enzymes, or of bile salts. Mucosal and mural causes of malabsorption are abundant, and include gluten-sensitive enteropathy, tropical sprue, autoimmune enteropathy, and HIV/AIDS-related enteropathy, as well as mural conditions such as systemic sclerosis. Finally, microbial causes of malabsorption include bacter
