Emerging perspectives from the hearing voices movement: implications for research and practice.

The international Hearing Voices Movement (HVM) is a prominent mental health service-user/survivor movement that promotes the needs and perspectives of experts by experience in the phenomenon of hearing voices (auditory verbal hallucinations). The main tenet of the HVM is the notion that hearing voices is a meaningful human experience, and in this article, we discuss the historical growth and influence of the HVM before considering the implications of its values for research and practice in relation to voice-hearing. Among other recommendations, we suggest that the involvement of voice-hearers

Methadone maintenance treatment participant retention and behavioural effectiveness in China: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) has been scaled up by the Chinese government alongside persistent compulsory drug user detention, but the extent to which detention interferes with MMT is unknown. The study systematically reviews Chinese MMT retention rates, reasons for drop out, and behavioural changes. METHOD: Chinese and English databases of literature are searched for studies reporting retention rates, drug use and sexual behaviours among MMT participants in China between 2004 and 2013. The estimates are summarized through a systematic review and meta-analysis. RESULTS:

Patient involvement in clinical decision making: the effect of GP attitude on patient satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates general practitioners' (GPs) and patients' attitudes to shared decision making, and how these attitudes affect patient satisfaction. BACKGROUND: Sharing of information and decisions in the consultation is largely accepted as the ideal in general practice. Studies show that most patients prefer to be involved in decision making and shared decision making is associated with patient satisfaction, although preferences vary. Still we know little about how the interaction of GP and patients' attitudes affects patient satisfaction. One such study was conducted in t

Management of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common cause of morbidity among older men. Primary care physicians need to develop expertise in its management. The causes of BPH are unknown; aging and the presence of male androgens are the dominant risk factors. Obtaining a medical history is a key step in assessing whether lower urinary tract symptoms are due to BPH or to some other process. A reliable and valid seven-item questionnaire has been developed to objectively assess symptom severity. A focused physical examination including a digital rectal exam should be performed, as well as a urinalysis

Empowerment for adults with chronic mental health problems and obesity.

Obesity is a major health risk and a common problem among people with mental health problems. This article examines the role of empowerment within a health promotion framework for overweight and obese adults with chronic mental health problems. Behaviour change, while a valid strategy for health promotion, might not achieve the desired health gain. On the other hand, an empowered individual or community is able to bring about positive and permanent change by mobilising the necessary resources to achieve health.

Content of clinicians' communication with patients suffering from spinal pain in assessment situations in a specialized spine center: A qualitative study evaluating psychologically informed pain assessments before and after clinicians' participation in an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy course.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment is an important part of chronic pain rehabilitation and should be conducted in line with the current biopsychosocial conceptualization of pain to capture the subjectivity and context of pain. However, pain assessment is commonly conducted from a biomedical framework. A course in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) was provided to spinal pain clinicians as a framework to promote more person-centered and psychosocially focused assessments and related psychologically informed practices. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the verbal content of clinici

A Qualitative Study of Participation in Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs in an Integrated Health Care System.

INTRODUCTION: Despite strong incentives to use cardiac rehabilitation (CR), patient participation is low in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This is paradoxical given that VHA is an integrated health care system that offers a range of CR programs which should logically reduce barriers to access to CR participation. The purpose of this study was to better understand the contextual factors that influence patient participation in CR and how patients consider factors together when making decisions about CR participation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a qualitative study design we examined…

A framework for quality improvement: an analysis of factors responsible for improvement at hospitals participating in the Can Rapid Risk Stratification of Unstable Angina Patients Suppress Adverse Outcomes with Early Implementation of the ACC/AHA Guidelines (CRUSADE) quality improvement initiative.

BACKGROUND: Hospitals are under increasing pressure to improve their quality of care. However, a key question remains: how can hospitals best design and implement successful quality improvement (QI) programs? Hospitals currently employ a variety of QI initiatives but have little empirical evidence on which to base their quality efforts. METHODS: We designed and applied a hospital cross-sectional survey to 212 hospitals participating in CRUSADE (Can Rapid Risk Stratification of Unstable Angina Patients Suppress Adverse Outcomes with Early Implementation of the American College of Cardiology/Am

Psychosocial assessment of organ transplant candidates. Current status of methodological and philosophical issues.

Psychosocial assessments of candidates for organ transplant surgery are conducted to ascertain that potential patients are likely to benefit from the surgery through adequate coping, good compliance, and commitment to rehabilitation. Such assessments must be based on a realistic analysis of the behavioral demands of the transplant patient's role. Reliability of psychosocial assessments has been established within some programs, but wide discrepancies in the psychosocial criteria that are used exist among transplant centers. Validation studies are needed, with particular emphasis on outcomes fo

[Pilot Study of "Japanese Model of Asheville Project"~How Did It Work?].

For prevention of the aggravation of diabetic nephropathy, a treatment method that combines self-care with medical guidance is becoming increasingly important, leading to the development of programs for lifestyle modification for the patients. To assess the effectiveness of such programs, we have conducted a feasibility study of a patient self-care support program with medical collaboration by registered pharmacists in community pharmacies involving patients with diabetic nephropathy who are under treatment at medical institutions, including our hospital. This study evaluated the two primary m

Enablers to successful patient and public involvement in Palliative Care Research: Qualitative perspectives of public members and Program Coordinators.

BACKGROUND: Despite policy and health service imperatives for public involvement to be embedded within palliative care research, this practice is not commonplace. Few empirical studies have sought to explore and evaluate models of public involvement for palliative care. AIM: To explore experiences of public involvement within palliative care, and to identify enablers for successful models of involvement. DESIGN: An exploratory qualitative design was utilized. Semi-structured interviews were conducted via zoom or telephone, and interview transcripts were subjected to inductive thematic analys

Enabling public, patient and practitioner involvement in co-designing frailty pathways in the acute care setting.

BACKGROUND: Although not an inevitable part of ageing, frailty is an increasingly common condition in older people. Frail older patients are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of hospitalisation, including deconditioning, immobility and loss of independence (Chong et al, J Am Med Dir Assoc 18:638.e7-638.e11, 2017). The 'Systematic Approach to improving care for Frail older patients' (SAFE) study co-designed, with public and patient representatives, quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing the delivery of care to frail older patients within an acute hospital setting. The impact of a Personal Outpatient Worksheet and Educational Reference form on patient engagement and communication in the surgical clinic: multicentre randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: In contemporary medicine, time pressure, limited resourcing, human factors, and health literacy are barriers to delivering high-quality patient-centred care. Improving patient engagement may mitigate these barriers. This study evaluated the impact of the Personal Outpatient Worksheet and Educational Reference (POWER) form on patient engagement in the surgical outpatient setting. METHODS: A multicentre, randomized clinical trial was conducted in two metropolitan hospitals between July 2022 and January 2025. Patients over 16 attending a general surgical outpatient appointment were e

Empowering Patients: The Role of Shared Treatment Decision-Making in Advanced Bladder Cancer-A Podcast.

Shared treatment decision-making refers to an approach to care in which patients and their clinicians work in partnership to choose between treatment options, or delay/forgo treatment, concordant with patient values and considering the best available evidence. Research in various diseases, including cancer, has shown that patients who feel informed in treatment decisions have greater satisfaction with their medical care, better adherence to treatment, and better quality-of-life outcomes. The treatment landscape for advanced bladder cancer has evolved in recent years and several treatment optio

Patient Engagement with General Bulk Outreach: Impact of Primary Care Provider vs. Care Team Signature in General Bulk Patient Outreach.

Bulk messaging is an important population health tool used to engage patients in preventive care and chronic disease management, yet little is known about optimal formatting of the communication. One factor to consider is whether the signatory of the patient-facing communication is the patient's own Primary Care Provider (PCP) or a generic care team signature. In this quasi-randomized, non-blinded study we compared identical generic bulk outreach messages directed toward patients with an upcoming appointment and invited them to self-schedule a Medicare Annual wellness visit prior to their sche
