Eye centring in portraits: a theoretical and empirical evaluation.

Tyler (1998 Nature 392 877) proposed that 'painters centre one eye in portraits', and that this is a hidden aesthetic principle used implicitly by artists and by viewers of portraits. We assess that hypothesis in three related studies: a Monte-Carlo analysis of eye placement in synthetic faces randomly placed within a frame; a survey of eye position in 786 painted portraits from Western art of the past six centuries; and an experimental study in which fifty subjects were asked which of two versions of 60 pairs of portraits they preferred, in only one of which the eye was precisely centred. Tak

Perception of emotional facial expressions at different intensities in early-symptomatic Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: While there is abundant evidence that patients with Huntington's disease (HD) have an impairment in the recognition of the emotional facial expression of disgust, previous studies have only examined emotion perception using full-blown facial expressions. OBJECTIVE: The current study examines the perception of facial emotional expressions in HD at different levels of intensity to investigate whether more subtle deficits can be detected, possible also in other emotions. METHOD: We compared early symptomatic HD patients with healthy matched controls on emotion perception, presenting

Prosopagnosia as a deficit in encoding curved surface.

RP is a case of "developmental" prosopagnosia who, according to brain-imaging segmentation data, shows reduction in volume of a limited set of structures of the right hemisphere. RP is as accurate as control subjects in tasks requiring the perception of nonface objects (e.g., matching subordinate labels to exemplars, naming two-tone images), with the exception of one perceptual task: The matching of different perspectives of amoebae-like stimuli (i.e., volumes made of a single smooth surface). In terms of speed ("efficiency") of responses, RP's performance falls clearly outside the normal limi

Dynamic visual perception of dyslexic children.

This study describes the capacity of children to detect fast changes of a small visual pattern. Three visual detection tasks for a group of normally reading (N = 140) and another group of dyslexic children (N = 366) in the age range of 7 to 16 years have been used. All three tasks require the detection of the fast changing orientation of a small pattern before it disappears. In one task, stationary fixation was required, because the orientation changes took place always at the same location. In the saccade condition, the pattern was displaced suddenly to one or the other side and a saccade was

Multidimensional scaling analyses of two construction-related tasks.

Representations involved in two construction-related tasks were analyzed by multidimensional scaling (MDS), a statistical technique that allows the dimensions of internal representations to be derived from empirically obtained judgment data. The tasks involved judgments of how similar two objects were and how well they fitted together; these judgments are related to copying and assembly abilities that are impaired in constructional apraxia. Analyses of numerical subjective ratings and response times for these judgments showed that within the same set of geometric objects, different shape-relat

Hemifacial asymmetry in emotion expressions.

We examined asymmetry in posed facial expression of emotions: happy and sad. Hemifacial composite photographs, left-left and right-right, were prepared, and subjects rated these for intensity of expressed emotion. Overall, left-left composites were judged to have expressed emotions relatively more intensely than the right-right composites. The significant Sex x Emotion interaction revealed that female expressors were judged as more expressive than male expressors in expressing sad facial emotion. Sex difference in expression of happy facial emotion was not significant.

Recognition performance of subjects with color-vision deficiencies on a polychromatic sonar screen for ship navigation.

To facilitate differentiation between objects that are approaching, stationary, and moving away, these objects are represented in different colors on the screens of sonar locating devices used in ship navigation. Yellow represents stationary objects, and represents approaching objects, and green represents those objects moving away. A total of 46 subjects with normal color vision and 184 individuals with color-vision deficiencies, among them 29 deuteranopic, 100 deuteranomalous, 21 protanopic and 34 protanomalous individuals, were investigated for their ability to identify different signals. Search for letter identity and location by disabled readers.

Reading-disabled boys, reading- and age-matched controls, and adults searched letter arrays for the identity or location of a probe letter. Response time (RT) and accuracy were examined as a function of the temporal relation between probe and array letters (probe first, simultaneous, array first), and array size (1-5 letters). Although disabled readers closely resembled age controls in RT, their accuracy differed significantly when large letter arrays were tested. In the letter identification task, this was only evident when the array letters preceded the probe; in the letter location task, it

A test of episodic visual memory.

This study investigated the relationship between episodic visual memory and word recognition using a novel test of episodic visual memory. 40 subjects learned a set of pseudo-orthographic stimuli which were processed in terms of visual form and structure information during study. Subsequent recognition was better for more frequently and elaboratively processed stimuli, indicating performance was dependent on episodic visual memory. Recognition-test performance was also associated with visual lexical decision but not auditory lexical decision. It was concluded that recognition-test performance

Menstrual cycle effects on a VDT-based simulation task: cognitive indices and subjective ratings.

It is unclear whether the menstrual cycle affects the basics of performance, mainly task performance and cognitive functions. We examined menstrual cycle effects on VDT-based task performance, cognitive indices based on the signal-detection theory, and subjective ratings in questionnaires. We experimented in three phases: premenstrual, menstrual and postmenstrual phases. Previous studies reported premenstrual tension syndrome (PMST) in the premenstrual phase. Women used physiological and psychological strategies to cope during the menstrual phase. However, task performance, cognitive indices a

Alcohol impairs visual presence/absence detection more for females than for males.

Ninety subjects (45 males, 45 females) were given 0.0, 0.5, or 1.0 ml/kg body weight of 190-proof ethanol and tested for chance-level presence/absence detection thresholds with energy-masked presentations of traffic signs and blank inputs. Alcohol produced higher blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels, and higher detection threshold durations, for females than for males. These results indicate that alcohol influences precortical visual processing and that the influence is greater for females than for males. The higher bioavailability of alcohol in women is likely due to less gastric oxidatio

Sustained attention in normal and in reading-disabled youngsters with and without ADDH.

Three groups of children-one normal, one reading-disabled, and one reading-disabled with an additional diagnosis of attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADDH)-were administered the Continuous Performance Test and compared on correct detections and three types of commission errors. All three groups showed a decline in sustained attention over the course of the task but not differentially according to diagnostic group. When younger and older subgroups were compared, the reading-disabled children were found to make significantly more correct detections with increased age, but not when t

Facial recognition 1990.

A review of recent studies of prosopagnosia suggests that the weight of evidence has shifted in favor of regarding it as a disability that can be produced by a right hemisphere lesion alone even though bilateral disease remains the more frequent anatomical basis. It is possible that prosopagnosia resulting from a right hemisphere lesion occurs only within the context of some atypical condition of the left hemisphere. "Types" of prosopagnosia continue to be postulated and the "identification of individuality" hypothesis continues to be advanced. Autonomic and covert recognition studies of proso

Working memory in skilled and less skilled readers.

This study assessed skilled and less skilled readers' working memory performance. Fifty skilled and less skilled readers at two age levels were presented with sentence span and concurrent memory tasks. The span task results indicated that working memory differences exist between reading groups. The concurrent task revealed performance deficits for less skilled readers across verbal and nonverbal conditions, suggesting a central processing deficiency. Age differences were isolated to skilled readers. It was concluded that less skilled readers' working memory deficiencies were pervasive in the s

Pharmacogenetic study with diazepam in twins.

In a study with healthy volunteers (6 monozygotic and 4 dizygotic twin pairs) we followed up diazepam serum levels and psychotropic effects of diazepam after single-dose administration. We found that pharmacokinetic properties of diazepam as well as its influence on memory and performance are probably not under genetic control. On the other hand, genetic factors seem to contribute to effects of diazepam on affectivity.

[Recognition of object figures in unusual perspective and mental imagery].

Two cases are described: one with left occipital lesion and the other one with bilateral occipital damage; the first showed deficit of Mental Imagery and preserved recognition of pictures in unusual perspective; the second, vice-versa, showed integrity of Mental Imagery and deficit in visual recognition. The relationship between Mental Imagery and recognition of pictures in unusual perspective is discussed.

Durations of recognition for single letters, with and without visual masking, by dyslexics and normal readers.

Two sets of letters, i.e., those subject to reversal/rotation such as b, d, p, and q, and others, e, i, u, w, x, and o, were tachistoscopically presented singly to 15 normal readers (aged 6 to 14 yr.) and 29 dyslexic children (aged 7 to 13 yr.). Half the presentations were subject to masking by visual noise. Contrary to a prediction based on temporal-sequencing deficiency, the dyslexics required a significantly longer time than normals for recognition. This occurred under both the masked and non-masked conditions. Reversible/rotational letters gave more difficulty than other letters only when

Sequential effects in visual search, action control, and task switching: Evidence for distinct episodic-retrieval mechanisms.

Everyday tasks typically require us to flexibly change our goals, prioritize relevant objects, and select appropriate motor responses. The task-switching, visual-search, and action-control literatures that study these abilities have all documented striking sequential effects (i.e., a strong impact on behavior when various aspects of a task repeat from one trial to the next) and suggested different mechanisms to explain them. However, crosstalk between these literatures has typically been restricted to pairs, with little attempt to integrate all three. Therefore, how these effects interact in c

Hierarchical optimization predicts plasticity in the macaque inferior temporal cortex following object training.

How does the primate brain coordinate plasticity when learning to discriminate new objects? We measured consequences of object learning on inferior temporal (IT) cortex, a key waypoint supporting object recognition in the ventral visual stream, in male macaques. Neural activity in task-trained monkeys' IT showed increased object selectivity, enhanced linear separability across objects, and more object-invariant representations compared to task-naïve monkeys. To model these differences, we developed a computational framework using anatomically-mapped artificial neural network (ANN) models of th

Spatial extension of parafoveal processing predicts reading speed gain during reading acceleration.

Fast and efficient reading involves not only processing the currently fixated word but also simultaneous processing of the upcoming text. Although the role of extrafoveal processing in natural reading has been extensively documented, its contribution to reading acceleration benefits has remained unexplored. In the present study, we sought to investigate whether reading acceleration might act by influencing the efficiency and spatial extent of parafoveal processing. Participants read at either a natural or an accelerated pace while the availability of parafoveal information was independently ma
