Adapting a peer recovery coach-delivered behavioral activation intervention for problematic substance use in a medically underserved community in Baltimore City.

Low-income, racial/ethnic minority groups have disproportionately high rates of problematic substance use yet face barriers in accessing evidence-based interventions (EBIs). Peer recovery coaches (PRCs), individuals with lived experience with problematic substance use, may provide an effective approach to reaching these individuals. Traditionally PRCs have focused on bridging to other types of care rather than delivering EBIs themselves. The aim of this study was to assess perceptions of the appropriateness of a PRC-delivered adapted behavioral activation (BA) intervention to reduce problemati

Peer support specialists and perinatal opioid use disorder: Someone that's been there, lived it, seen it.

Perinatal opioid use disorder (OUD) has increased drastically since 2000 and is associated with myriad adverse outcomes. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recommends using peer support services to promote sustained remission from substance use disorders (SUDs). Integrating peer support specialists into perinatal OUD treatment has the potential to improve maternal and child health. However, there is limited published research on the experiences of pregnant and parenting women with peer support specialists during SUD treatment. The purpose of this study was t

Preventing drug use among sexual-minority youths: findings from a tailored, web-based intervention.

PURPOSE: Rates of drug use among sexual-minority youths are disproportionately high. Yet, expressly designed prevention programs targeting this population are absent. This study developed and tested a web-based drug abuse prevention program for sexual-minority youths. METHODS: A sample (N = 236) of sexual-minority youths was recruited via Facebook. Online, all youths completed pretests; youths randomly assigned to the intervention received a 3-session prevention program; and all youths completed posttest and 3-month follow-up measurements. RESULTS: At 3-month follow-up and compared to youths

An Examination of Reciprocal Associations Between Social Preference, Popularity, and Friendship during Early Adolescence.

Getting along with peers becomes increasingly important to health and well-being during early adolescence (10-14 years). Young adolescents may succeed with peers when they are well-liked by and popular among the larger peer group (or at the group-level of social complexity). They might also fare well with peers when they are able to form numerous mutual and high quality friendships (at the dyadic-level of social complexity). Theory emphasizes the interrelatedness of different types of peer experiences, but few longitudinal studies have examined the interplay among and between group- and dyadic…

An evaluation of a breastfeeding peer support service in North East England: A qualitative study with service users, practitioners and volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding has health benefits for women and infants. Although the WHO recommends that infants are breastfed exclusively for the first six months, exclusive breastfeeding rates remain low in the UK, with many women stopping breastfeeding within six weeks of their infant's birth. Many women face challenges initiating and continuing breastfeeding, including low confidence, limited support and misinformation. Breastfeeding peer support (BPS) services play a vital role in supporting women to continue to breastfeed by connecting new mothers with trained volunteers who offer advice, e

Implementation of peer support for families of children with CHD: leveraging the unique perspectives of leaders within patient/family organisations.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with CHD frequently experience psychological distress related to the chronic and unpredictable demands of their child's diagnosis. Peer support can mitigate distress and promote resilience, but few studies have explored factors affecting its implementation or the experiences of those who provide or facilitate peer support. This study aimed to identify barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for optimising peer support from the unique perspectives of leaders of patient/family organisations within the CHD community. METHODS: Using online crowdsourcing meth

Illicit Substance Use Among Youth in Taiwanese Temple Parade Troupes: The Roles of Social Relationships and Substance Acquisition Settings.

BACKGROUND: This study examined illicit substance use among youth in Taiwanese temple parade troupes, a culturally distinct but high-risk population. METHODS: In 2019, we surveyed 696 participants recruited on-site through convenience sampling across Taiwan using a structured questionnaire that assessed demographics, alcohol and tobacco use, substance-involved social ties, and acquisition settings. Three domains of substance-involved ties (family, peers, intimate partners; range 0-3) and three types of acquisition settings (private, social, public; range 0-3) were analyzed using descriptive s

Autistic young people's psychological well-being in school.

Autistic students often face unique challenges at school compared to their non-autistic peers. However, there is a lack of robust evidence investigating their well-being at school. This study examined autistic adolescents' school well-being using data from a UK population-based cohort. Participants self-reported their positive and negative affect towards and within school. Results indicated that autistic adolescents (n = 271; Mage = 13.73; SD = 0.47; 23.11% female) experienced significantly lower levels of school well-being than non-autistic adolescents (n = 8077; Mage = 13.78; SD = 0.45; 50.6

Developmental Dynamics of Negative Automatic Thoughts in Childhood and Gender Differences: A Longitudinal Investigation Based on Depressive Symptoms and Peer Attachment.

Negative automatic thoughts are a core manifestation of cognitive vulnerability and a key mechanism linking depressive symptoms and peer attachment, two major developmental processes during childhood, with effects that extend into adolescence. However, little research has examined how negative automatic thoughts interact with depressive symptoms and peer attachment over time, especially during childhood when thinking patterns are still developing. It is also unclear whether these processes differ by gender. This study employed a four-wave random intercept cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) to e

Service users' perspectives on acute, outreach and outpatient psychiatric crisis interventions with and without peer support: results of a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Crisis intervention teams assist individuals in acute mental health crises. If unavailable or situations escalate, the police may be involved, and compulsory admissions may be initiated in case of risk to self or others. - measures often perceived as stigmatizing and traumatizing. Respectful, empathetic interactions can prevent escalation and reduce coercion. Peer support, by individuals with lived experience, can enhance recovery, improve quality of life, and reduce coercive measures. In the city of Bremen, the Crisis Intervention Service (CIS) handles emergencies via mobile teams

A Multilevel Network Peer Intervention Among Student Men Who Have Sex With Men Attending University: Protocol for an Implementation-Effectiveness Before-After Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The HIV prevalence among student men who have sex with men (MSM) in China is substantially higher than that in the general student population. However, targeted interventions for this vulnerable population remain limited. While digital technologies and peer-led approaches have shown promise in HIV prevention among MSM, their application in university settings is underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of a multilevel, internet-based peer intervention model in reducing HIV and syphilis incidence, improving prevention behaviors, and

Rationale, design, and methodology of a randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of peer-enhanced care coordination on linkage to HCV care among formerly incarcerated individuals.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) disproportionately affects criminal legal-involved individuals (CLI), yet low treatment availability and high turnover in U.S. jails limits the number of individuals treated while incarcerated. HCV care coordination upon release is also an unmet need requiring improved models of care. This study will assess the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a peer-enhanced HCV care coordination intervention among individuals leaving jail. METHODS/DESIGN: We aim to enroll 80 current or formerly incarcerated CLI with current HCV infection. Participants will be

Peer-supported mindfulness-based intervention for managing depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression in old age is a public health concern contributing to individual and societal burdens. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) have shown promise in reducing depressive symptoms. However, time commitments associated with these interventions could pose challenges to older adults. To address this, we propose a briefer mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) with peer supporters to engage and support participants experiencing time constraints and distress. This protocol describes a study examining the efficacy of a peer-supporte

From Healthy Eating to Positive Mental Health in Adolescents: A Moderated Mediation Model Involving Stress Management and Peer Support.

Background: Adolescent mental health is a growing public health concern, with increasing prevalence of anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation. While nutrition is a recognized factor in physical health, its role in mental well-being, especially through holistic models, remains underexplored. Objectives: This study examines a moderated mediation model in which perceived healthy eating (self-rated diet quality) was associated with positive mental health (PMH) in adolescents, mediated by stress management and moderated by peer social support. Mood Lifters for Bipolar Disorder: A Feasibility Study Investigating a Peer-Led Adjunctive Intervention for Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Current treatment approaches for bipolar disorder work to improve symptoms while preventing relapse. However, quality of life (QoL) is often not addressed, and many individuals struggle to reach stability and recovery. This study aimed to investigate the capacity for adjunctive sources of care that promote evidence-based skills and peer support to improve functioning and QoL for individuals with bipolar disorder. METHODS: Eighteen participants with bipolar disorder completed a 16-week, peer-led Mood Lifters for Bipolar Disorder (ML-BD) program as a part of this uncontrolled feasibi

Working Elements in Interventions to Reduce Problematic Alcohol Use According to Older Adults: A Realist Evaluation.

This study explored working elements (E) and mechanisms (M) in interventions within different contexts (C), contributing to the outcome (O) of reducing (problematic) alcohol use among older adults. Guided by a realist evaluation approach, interviews with older adults participating in interventions (N = 20) were conducted. In different contexts, several working elements were identified: (1) receiving information about alcohol and health (risks); (2) paying attention to abstinence; (3) being in contact with and receiving support from peers and relatives; (4) maintaining contact with a practition

Reunion with a peer partner reduces PVN oxytocin neuron immunoreactivity in socially selective voles.

Friendships-i.e. selective peer relationships-are an important aspect of human behavior, but are rare in rodent species. Meadow voles are seasonally social rodents that form non-reproductive social groups in winter/short day lengths that are selective in nature. Across rodents, oxytocin neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus are typically active during socially salient events, including interaction with novel individuals as well as social separation. To assess whether familiar and novel peer interactions produce different patterns of immunolabeling in a species that f
