Attachment anxiety and attentional control predict immediate and delayed emotional Stroop interference.

Attachment anxiety has been associated with a hyperactivating response to threat. A modified emotional Stroop task was used to investigate temporal characteristics of the threat response by assessing response latencies to interpersonally threatening words (immediate interference) and two directly subsequent neutral filler words (delayed interference). Greater immediate and delayed interference to threatening words was observed (n = 125), with higher levels of attachment anxiety associated with immediate interference to threatening cues, and lower levels with delayed interference. Thus, attachm

Cognitive performance in nondemented nonpsychotic Parkinson disease patients with or without a history of depression prior to the onset of motor symptoms.

In Parkinson disease (PD), cognitive impairment is common, occurs mainly in the form of milder deficits (as opposed to dementia), and commonly coincides with depression. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated whether depression that existed before the onset of typical motor symptoms (pre-PD depression) reflected on the actual cognitive performance. Nondemented nonpsychotic PD patients with (test, n = 27) and without (control, n = 112) a history of pre-PD depression, caliper-matched for age, education, and disease duration were assessed for motor and nonmotor disease characteristics and in

A confirmatory factor analysis of a self-report version of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale.

One of the most popular measures of social phobia is the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS; Liebowitz, 1987). The LSAS is a 24-item semi-structured interview measure of fear and avoidance experienced in a range of social and performance situations. Recently, the LSAS has been modified to a self-report version (LSAS-SR) by several independent groups (Cox, Ross, Swinson, & Direnfeld, 1998; Fresco et al., 2001; Mancini, Van Ameringen, & Oakman, 1999). A self-report version offers ease of administration, but it may differ from the structured interview version in its psychometric properties. We

Daridorexant for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and insomnia disorder: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is highly prevalent in adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), worsening core symptoms, mood, and cognition. Despite its impact, pharmacological options remain limited. Dual orexin receptor antagonists, such as daridorexant, are a promising yet untested approach in this population. METHODS: In a naturalistic one-month study, 24 adults with ADHD and comorbid insomnia disorder received daridorexant 50 mg nightly. Sleep outcomes were assessed with the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Sleep Condition Indicator (SCI), and actigraphy-based measures. Secondary

Effect of L-theanine on cerebellar granule cell migration related to cognitive disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebellar granule cell migration plays a crucial role in cerebellum development, and any abnormalities in CGC migration can lead to significant neurological disorders such as anxiety, a common psychological disorder that impacts a person's emotional, physical, and social health. L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea, demonstrates neuroprotective properties and regulates the release of neurotransmitters by stimulating CGC migration. This study investigated the impact of L-theanine on CGC migration related to cognitive disorders. METHODS: ddY male mice treated with a singl

Person-level contributions of bipolar polygenic risk score to the prediction of new-onset bipolar disorder in at-risk offspring.

BACKGROUND: Previous work indicates that polygenic risk scores (PRS) for bipolar disorder (BD) are elevated in adults and youth with BD, but whether BD-PRS can inform person-level diagnostic prediction is unknown. Here, we test whether BD-PRS improves performance of a previously published risk calculator (RC) for BD. METHODS: 156 parents with BD-I/II and their offspring ages 6-18 were recruited and evaluated with standardized diagnostic assessments every two years for >12 years. DNA was extracted from saliva samples, genotyping performed, and BD-PRS calculated based on a 2021 meta-analysis. U

Persisting breathlessness and activities reduced or ceased: a population study in older men.

INTRODUCTION: Breathlessness is debilitating and increases in prevalence with age, with people progressively reducing their everyday activities to 'self-manage' it. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of breathlessness on function in terms of activities that have been reduced or ceased ('compromised') in older men. METHODS: A cross-sectional postal survey of Swedish 73-year-old man in the VAScular and Chronic Obstructive Lung disease study self-reporting on demographics, breathlessness (modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) scale, Dyspnoea-12, Multidimensional Dyspnea Scale) and its du

ICD-10 mild cognitive disorder: its outcome three years later.

OBJECTIVE: The aims were to (i) report the outcome of mild cognitive disorder (MCD) 3.6 years after initial interview and diagnosis; (ii) identify predictors of new cases of MCD. The hypotheses were that (i) persons with MCD are more likely to develop dementia than those without MCD; (ii) symptoms of anxiety or depression predict MCD caseness at follow-up. DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study. SETTING: Community of elderly people (age 70-97 years). PARTICIPANTS: 612 of 897 elderly subjects (mean 76 years) were reinterviewed. Of the 36 MCD cases originally identified, 25 were available at follo

Multidimensional perceived school support and AI learning anxiety among university students: the mediating roles of control-value appraisals.

INTRODUCTION: As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes embedded in university learning, students may experience anxiety when they doubt their capacity to learn with it or question its academic value. This study examines the direct association between multidimensional perceived school support and AI learning anxiety and the indirect associations involving control-value appraisals, represented by AI learning self-efficacy and perceived usefulness. METHOD: Data from 547 Chinese university students were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) to test direct, parallel indirect, and sequen

Anxiety-like behaviors in rats exposed to the single and combined program of running exercise and environmental enrichment.

Exercise (Ex) and environmental enrichment (EE) as the nondrug solutions have positive effects on cognitive behaviors and also increase the ability to cope with anxiety, fear, and stress. In this research, we decided to investigate the simultaneous effect of Ex and EE on anxiety-like behaviors and hippocampal neurogenesis markers in healthy rats. A total of 40 male Wistar rats were divided into four treatment groups: control, EE, Ex, and EE + Ex. Animals in EE groups were housed in large cages (50 × 50 × 50 cm) equipped with toys and objects of different shapes for 3 weeks. Ex-animals were for

Differences in the neural basis and transcriptomic patterns in acute and persistent pain-related anxiety-like behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Both acute and persistent pain is associated with anxiety in clinical observations, but whether the underlying neural mechanisms differ is poorly understood. METHODS: We used formalin or complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) to induce acute or persistent pain. Behavioral performance was assessed by the paw withdrawal threshold (PWT), open field (OF), and elevated plus maze (EPM) tests. C-Fos staining was used to identify the activated brain regions. Chemogenetic inhibition was further performed to examine the necessity of brain regions in behaviors. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to

Depression and anxiety up to two years after acute pulmonary embolism: Prevalence and predictors.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is an acute life-threatening event. Besides known physical long-term consequences such as persistent dyspnoea or reduced physical performance, less attention is given to the emotional experience. METHODS: We used data from patients with PE of the 'Lungenembolie Augsburg (LEA)' cohort study at University Hospital Augsburg. Baseline characteristics were collected during hospital stay and participants received postal questionnaires 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after their PE event. Mental problems were assessed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).

Rumination in Children with Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Cognitive Distraction and Relation to Social Stress Processing.

According to cognitive models of social anxiety disorder (SAD), both anticipatory processing and post-event processing are core mechanisms in disorder maintenance leading to dysfunctional coping with social situations through negative self-evaluation and increased anxiety. To date, little is known about these processes during late childhood, a critical period for disorder development. Further, it remains unclear if dysfunctional rumination in children can be altered through psychotherapeutic interventions such as cognitive distraction. In the current study, children aged 9 to 13 years with SAD

Screening for perinatal anxiety disorders: Room to grow.

BACKGROUND: The anxiety and their related disorders (AD) are the most prevalent of all mental health conditions, disproportionately affecting women. The value of perinatal AD screening is well established but there is very limited evidence to support the applicability of existing anxiety screening instruments. To our knowledge, no previous studies have evaluated an AD screening instrument in a perinatal population using full gold standard methodology. OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of the most commonly used and/or recommended screening tools for perinatal AD (i.e., the Edinburgh Postnatal

Remission and resurgence of anxiety-like behavior across protracted withdrawal stages in ethanol-dependent rats.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol dependence is a chronic disorder in which withdrawal symptoms often persist after detoxification. The purpose of the present experiment was to characterize susceptibility to stress and anxiogenic stimuli in rats over an extended time period following ethanol withdrawal. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were made dependent via ethanol vapor exposure. The rats were then tested in the elevated plus-maze during acute ethanol withdrawal (ACW, approximately 8 hour), early "protracted" withdrawal (EPW, 2 weeks), or late "protracted" withdrawal (LPW, 6, 12 weeks) following brief restrain

Development and evaluation of the Daily Assessment of Symptoms - Anxiety (DAS-A) scale to evaluate onset of symptom relief in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Fast-acting anxiolytics are important to patients and society. Measuring early onset, however, requires a sensitive and clinically responsive measure. This study develops and evaluates the psychometric properties of a new patient-reported instrument, the Daily Assessment of Symptoms - Anxiety (DAS-A), designed to detect reduction of anxiety symptoms in patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) during the first week of treatment. METHODS: Clinician interviews and patient focus groups were conducted to identify relevant constructs; discussions focused on early symptom improve
