Perinatal outcome in pregnancy induced hypertension.

Perinatal outcome and the factors affecting it were studied in 140 pregnant women with hypertension. Perinatal mortality rate (PNM) was 140/1000 and the stillbirth rate was 8.7%. In severe hypertension PNM was 52.3% and all perinatal deaths were 8.7%, when the serum uric acid level were more than 4.5 mg%.

Prenatal diagnosis and management of monoamniotic twins.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this article is to investigate the perinatal outcomes of monoamniotic twins under current standards of prenatal management involving intensive fetal surveillance. RECENT FINDINGS: The incidence of perinatal mortality in monoamniotic twins has fallen over the last 2 decades. Umbilical cord entanglement has long been considered one of the main causes of poor outcome among monoamniotic twins; however, new evidence shows that it appears to be less important than prematurity and congenital anomalies. If intensive fetal surveillance is provided, the risk of perinat…

Ultrasound evaluation of amniotic fluid: outcome of pregnancies with severe oligohydramnios.

Severe oligohydramnios, defined as a condition in which the largest pocket of amniotic fluid measures less than 1 cm in its vertical axis as determined by an ultrasound method, was observed in 113 patients in a population of 15,431 referred high-risk patients (0.7%). In all cases, intervention took place unless there was a recognized structural anomaly or extreme prematurity. Overall gross perinatal mortality was 132.7/1000, and the incidence of major anomaly was 13.3%. With intervention the corrected perinatal mortality rate was 17.7/1000, a rate not significantly different from that observed…

[Perinatal problems in breech presentation].

543 cases of breech presentation at the 1st Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Vienna were investigated. The rate of Cesarean section showed during the last years a distinct increase (1969 to 1973: 16,6%, 1974 to 1977: 27,9%, 1977: 39,7%). A significant decrease of perinatal mortality in cases of breech presentation was not observed. On the other hand an increase in Cesarean sections diminishes the rate of perinatal mortality. In this publication the findings concerning the obstetrical results using abdominal or vaginal delivery are compared. No significant difference in …

Perinatal health predictors using artificial intelligence: A review.

Advances in public health and medical care have enabled better pregnancy and birth outcomes. The rates of perinatal health indicators such as maternal mortality and morbidity; fetal, neonatal, and infant mortality; low birthweight; and preterm birth have reduced over time. However, they are still a public health concern, and considerable disparities exist within and between countries. For perinatal researchers who are engaged in unraveling the tangled web of causation for maternal and child health outcomes and for clinicians involved in the care of pregnant women and infants, artificial intell

Maternal and fetal outcome in eclamptic patients in Benin City, Nigeria.

Eclampsia is a well-recognised major cause of maternal death and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The incidence of eclampsia, its presenta … ce (10.6%) and epigastric pain (7%). There were nine stillbirths and 16 early neonatal deaths for a perinatal mortality rate of 214/1000. The major causes of perinatal mortality were prematurity and birth asphyxia. Eleven maternal deaths occurred with a maternal case fatality rate of 10.7% and a maternal mortality ratio from eclampsia of 140/100 000. The clinical cau …

Breech delivery.

Perinatal mortality in 700 cases of breech delivery was studied retrospectively and results were compared with those of controls. Cases were matched with those of cephalic presentation for maternal age and parity, foetal gestational age, and birthweight. The perinatal mortality was more than twice as high in the breech group. The difference remained significant after intrauterine foetal death and malformations were excluded. Neonatal death was most frequently caused by the respiratory distress syndrome and prematurity, and in the breech group also by intracranial haemorrhage. The difference in…

The Effect of Maternal Near-Miss on Adverse Perinatal Outcomes Among Women Admitted to Hospitals of Gurage Zone, Southwest Ethiopia: A Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal outcomes refer to events affecting a newborn after fetal viability, typically from 28 weeks of gestation through the first seven days of life. Adverse perinatal outcomes include stillbirth, low birth weight, preterm birth, early neonatal death, perinatal mortality, admission to a neonatal intensive care unit, and birth asphyxia. Despite substantial reductions in under-five mortality over recent decades, neonatal mortality rates have shown minimal improvement in sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effect of maternal near-miss on adverse perinat…

Investigation of stillbirth causes in Suriname: application of the WHO ICD-PM tool to national-level hospital data.

BACKGROUND: Suriname has one of the highest stillbirth rates in Latin America and the Caribbean. To facilitate data comparison of perinatal deaths, the World Health Organization developed the International Classification of Diseases-10 Perinatal Mortality (ICD-PM). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to (1) assess characteristics and risk indicators of women with a stillbirth, (2) determine the timing and causes of stillbirths according to the ICD-PM with critical evaluation of its application and (3) propose recommendations for the reduction of stillbirths in Suriname. METHODS: A hospital-based, nation-wid…

Serum Vitamin D status in full term neonates with severe perinatal depression.

BACKGROUND: Severe perinatal depression is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in neonates. Vitamin D levels were observed to be low in mothers and their neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy in some studies, owing to its neuroprotective properties. OBJECTIVE: Primary objective was to compare vitamin D deficiency state in full term neonates with severe perinatal depression and healthy term controls. Secondary objectives were to determine sensitivity and specificity of serum 25(OH)D<12 ng/mL in predicting mortality, development of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, abnormal ne

Prediction of outcome of fetal congenital heart disease using a cardiovascular profile score.

OBJECTIVES: Congestive heart failure in fetuses with congenital heart defects (CHD) is associated with high perinatal mortality. The clinical condition can be characterized by five ultrasound markers that comprise the 10-point cardiovascular profile (CVP) score. Our aim was to assess the value of the CVP score in evaluating the condition and in maintaining surveillance of fetuses with CHD. METHODS: We evaluated retrospectively 131 singleton pregnancies with a diagnosis of fetal CHD, which had been assessed by serial echocardiographic examinations, during which the CVP score was obtained.
