Anorexia Nervosa in Comorbidity With Borderline Personality Disorder in Adolescence: A Specific Clinical Endophenotype?

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa and borderline personality disorder are often associated and share some core elements, including emotional dysregulation and affective instability. Nevertheless, the association of these two conditions in adolescence is still little studied. METHOD: The present study aims at investigating, through a multidimensional assessment, the psychopathological characteristics of adolescents affected by anorexia nervosa in comorbidity with borderline personality disorder on a sample of 127 female adolescents, through the comparison with adolescents with borderline personality

Validation of the Five-Factor Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory in a Mental Health Sample.

The Five-Factor Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (FFOCI) is a recently developed measure of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) based on an established dimensional model of general personality, the five-factor model. The present study aimed to evaluate the construct validity of the FFOCI by examining its associations with both traditional and dimensional diagnostic models of OCPD. This study used an archival data set of mental health patients that employed a multimethod design. A total of 214 individuals (and their nominated informants) completed various personality inventories inde

Personality variables and disorders in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

All dominant models of the eating disorders implicate personality variables in the emergence of weight concerns and the development of specific symptoms such as bingeing and purging. Standardized measures of personality traits and disorders generally confirm clinical descriptions of restricting anorexics as constricted, conforming, and obsessional individuals. A less consistent picture suggesting affective instability and impulsivity has emerged from the assessment of subjects with bulimia nervosa. Considerable heterogeneity exists within eating disorder subtypes, however, and a number of spec

Relationships between the MAPI and the MMPI in the assessment of adolescent psychopathology.

Although the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory (MAPI) are both widely used in the clinical assessment of adolescents, no research has examined the interrelationship between these two instruments. We investigated MMPI and MAPI responses from 199 adolescents assessed at entrance to inpatient or outpatient psychiatric programs in Florida and Virginia. Univariate correlation analyses identified areas of significant associations between these measures, with coefficients ranging widely from -.70 to .72. Substantial diagnostic differenc

Personality disorders in older adults: Differences in self-informant ratings.

Previous research on self-informant reports in assessing personality disorders (PDs) has been mainly focused on adults, leaving older adults under-studied. We examined self-informant agreement in PD screening among older adults (≥60 years) using the Gerontological Personality disorders Scale (GPS). Potential differences such as who reports more personality pathology on a PD screener (i.e., GPS), item accessibility and the effect of relational aspects were studied as well. Data of 326 older adult-informant dyads, of which the older adults were sampled from five general practices in the Netherla

Personality changes with subcallosal cingulate deep brain stimulation in patients with treatment-resistant depression.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising investigational approach for treatment-resistant depression. However, reports suggesting changes in personality with DBS for movement disorders have raised clinical and ethical concerns. We prospectively examined changes in personality dimensions and antidepressant response to subcallosal cingulate (SCC)-DBS for treatment-resistant depression. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with treatment-resistant depression underwent SCC-DBS. We used the NEO Five-Factor Inventory for personality assessment at baseline and every 3 months until 15 months p…

Childhood Traumatic Experiences and ICD-11 Model of Personality Disorders: a Study Among Croatian Psychiatric Patients.

Childhood traumatic experiences have been implicated in the development of personality disorders (PDs), but research within the recent ICD-11 PD framework is still lacking. We aimed to explore the effects of various types of early trauma on the ICD-11 PD severity and maladaptive personality domains. In this cross-sectional study, 398 adult psychiatric patients (57% females; 32% PD) filled out the following self-report instruments: the ICD-11 Personality Disorder Severity Scale, the Personality Assessment Questionnaire for ICD-11, and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form. PD patients…

Prospective Associations Between Personality Traits and Major Depressive Disorder Symptom Severity: The Mediating Role of Illness Representations.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) patients' personality traits and illness representations are linked to MDD severity. However, the associations between personality and illness representations in MDD and the mediating role of illness representations between personality and MDD severity have not been investigated. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the aforementioned associations and the possible mediating role of illness representations between personality and MDD severity. One hundred twenty-five patients with a MDD diagnosis, aged 48.18 ± 13.92 (84% females), participated in the stu

Internet-Related Disorders and Their Effects on Personality Development in Adolescents from Germany-Results from a Prospective Study.

Internet-related disorders (IRD) are increasingly becoming a major health issue. IRD are defined as the predominant use of online content, related to a loss of control and continued use despite negative consequences. Despite findings from cross-sectional studies, the causality of pathways accelerating the development of IRD are unclear. While etiological models emphasize the role of personality as risk factor, mutual influences between IRD and personality have not been examined. A prospective study with two assessments was conducted with n = 941 adolescents (mean age of 13.1 years; 10-17 years

Emerging personality in adolescence: developmental trajectories, internalizing and externalizing problems, and the role of mentalizing abilities.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying longitudinal trajectories of emerging personality (EP) is crucial to highlight developmental patterns that might foster personality pathology in adolescence and early adulthood. Research on the exacerbation of personality pathology in adolescence identifies the significant contribution of internalizing and externalizing problems and suggests the importance of considering aspects such as mentalization, while accounting for gender differences. METHODS: In our study, we adopted a mixed-model approach to (1) explore longitudinally EP (Adolescent Personality Structure Que

The Impact of Personality Pathology on Treatment Outcome in Late-life Panic Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid personality disorders are assumed to negatively interfere with the treatment outcome of affective disorders. Data on late-life panic disorder remain unknown. We examined the association of personality pathology and treatment outcome related to age and treatment modality. METHODS: An observational study on the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder with agoraphobia among patients 18 to 74 years of age and randomized controlled comparison of paroxetine and CBT in older patients (60 y of age or older) were performed. The Mediator Effect of Personality on the Relationship Between Symptomatic Impairment and Treatment Outcome in Eating Disorders.

Features of personality disorders (PDs) have been found to explain meaningful variance in the onset, maintenance, and symptomatic presentation of eating disorders (EDs), and a co-occurent personality pathology is commonly associated with poorer response to ED treatment. The "pathoplasty model" of the relationship between personality and EDs implies that, once both conditions are established, they are likely to interact in ways that modify therapy outcome; however, to date, no studies have explored overall personality functioning, and especially PD clusters, as a mediator of treatment outcome.

Nonpharmacologic Interventions to Prevent Pressure Ulcers in Older Patients: An Overview of Systematic Reviews (The Software ENgine for the Assessment and optimization of drug and non-drug Therapy in Older peRsons [SENATOR] Definition of Optimal Evidence-Based Non-drug Therapies in Older People [ONTOP] Series).

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers (PUs) are frequent in older patients, and the healing process is usually challenging, therefore, prevention should be the first strategic line in PU management. Nonpharmacologic interventions may play a role in the prevention of PUs in older people, but most systematic reviews (SRs) have not addressed this specific population using convincing outcome measures. OBJECTIVE: To summarize and critically appraise the evidence from SRs of the primary studies on nonpharmacologic interventions to prevent PUs in older patients. DESIGN: SR and meta-analysis of comparative st
