Two hundred and forty arthroscopic meniscectomies have been performed between 1980 and 1982. One hundred and ninety-eight cases have been reviewed with a follow up of between 3 and 6 months and 101 cases were reviewed with a follow up of between 6 months and 2 years. On eight occasions the arthroscopy had to be completed by an arthrotomy and one of these became septic. No sepsis was observed in the absence of arthrotomy. Portal pyaemia or pylephlebitis is a form of septic (often suppurative) thrombophlebitis of the portal venous system. It may develop as a complication of intra-abdominal sepsis, such as diverticulitis or appendicitis. Patients typically present with a high fever that is sometimes accompanied by jaundice. We report a case of portal pyaemia associated with multiple liver abscesses and discuss the medical and surgical management of this condition.

We report a case of Trousseau's syndrome with cholangiocarcinoma complicated by a fatal pulmonary embolism after liver biopsy. A 69-year-old man who presented with right upper quadrant pain was found to have portal vein thrombosis and nonspecific liver hypodensities after imaging by computerized tomography. Following four days of anticoagulation, heparin was held for percutaneous liver biopsy. After the biopsy, he developed acute hepatic failure, acute kidney injury, lactic acidemia, and expired. The authors report 21 cases of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia with ischemic vascular complications. The clinical presentations were peripheral arterial ischemia (16 cases), hemiplegia (1 case) and deep vein thrombosis (4 cases). The vascular surgeon confronted by these complications in an emergency situation should recognise the difficulties of clinical diagnosis (atypical forms) and biological investigations (problems of tests of platelet aggregation).
