BACKGROUND: Fars province lies to the south of the main foci of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) caused by Leishmania major in central and northern Iran, and its ZCL foci might have emerged more recently because of different transmission cycles. However, there have been limited studies of the parasites infecting the regional sandfly vectors.
METHODS: The diversities of sandflies and the Leishmania parasites infecting female sandflies were assessed for different habitats in Fars ZCL foci, 2008-2009, using standardized sandfly trapping and characterization of ribosomal DNA haplotypes of p

Leishmania infantum is the causative agent of infantile visceral leishmaniasis (IVL) in the Mediterranean Basin and, based on isoenzyme typing of a few isolates from patients and domestic dogs, this parasite was considered to predominate in the Kaleybar focus of IVL in northwest Iran. However, in the current investigation only one out of five sandfly infections was found to be L. infantum, based on PCR detection and sequencing of parasite internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA infecting Phlebotomus perfiliewi transcaucasicus. The four other infections were of haplotypes of L. tropica, the caus

The spiracle indices were determined in 1153 specimens from 5 species of the subgenus Larroussius (Diptera, Phlebotominae): Phlebotomus neglectus, P. perfiliewi, P. tobbi, P. kandelakii, and P. smirnovi) and 2 species of the subgenus Adlerius: P. brevis and P. longiductus. These species are all documented or potential vectors of Leishmania infantum, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis. The spiracle index is related to the rate of its evaporization and it is an important ecological index that assesses its behaviour, the time and conditions of its activity, its shelter, which in turn m

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Sudan is caused by Leishmania major, zymodeme LON-1. The disease is endemic in many parts of the country. The vector is Phlebotomus papatasi and the animal reservoir is probably the Nile rat Arvicanthis niloticus. Clinically, patients usually present with papules, nodules, or nodulo-ulcerative lesions, mainly on the exposed parts of the skin. In 20% of cases the parasite disseminates through the lymphatics, producing sporotrichoid-like lesions. The pathology of the lesion is described. Langerhans cells are the main antigen-presenting cells in CL. They pickup ant

Spanning almost six decades (1966-2024), 23 whole-genome sequences of Chandipura virus (CHPV), a neurotropic rhabdovirus associated with acute encephalitis primarily in India, have been analyzed. The virus is believed to be transmitted mainly by Sergentomyia and Phlebotomus sandflies. An epidemiological geographical map was developed showing global CHPV detection in sandflies, district-level human encephalitis reports in India, and sandfly species distribution across the country. This integrated landscape links viral occurrence with vector ecology and outbreak potential. To investigate evoluti

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of indoor residual spraying (IRS) during the post elimination phase of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and when to stop its application is uncertain. This study investigated the relationship between VL occurrence and frequency of IRS on vector density, infection rates, and insecticide susceptibility.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Four villages in the Sarlahi district served as sentinel surveillance sites for sandfly density measurement and xeno-monitoring, selected based on VL endemicity levels of high, moderate, low and non-endemic (no reported cases in the past 1

Nepal is committed to eliminating visceral leishmaniasis as a public health problem by 2030. The scattered distribution of VL cases across wide geo-ecological regions, including areas previously considered unsuitable for the survival of vectors and the transmission of the pathogen, poses a major threat to Nepal's national VL elimination programme. Regular monitoring and accurate identification of sand fly species are essential for implementing tailored vector control interventions. Hence, this study aimed to update the distribution of sand fly species with a focus on Leishmania vectors and eva

Toscana virus (TOSV) is an emerging arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) of medical importance that is increasing its range across much of the Mediterranean Basin, Europe and the Middle East. Transmitted by Phlebotomus spp. sand flies, it is the most clinically relevant sand fly-borne phlebovirus. Initially isolated in the Tuscany region of Central Italy, it has now been detected in multiple countries that surround this geographical area. Infection of the vertebrate host can cause fever and neurological disease, following the dissemination of the virus to the brain. The prevalence is high in some

Sandfly fever viruses are emerging Phleboviruses typically causing mild febrile illness. Some strains, however, can cause severe and occasionally fatal neuro-invasive disease. Like most viruses, Phleboviruses have devised various strategies to inhibit the type I interferon (IFN) response to support a productive infection. Still, most of the strategies identified so far focus on inhibiting the sensing arm of the IFN response. In contrast, the effect of sandfly virus infection on signaling from the IFN receptor is less characterized. Therefore, we tested the effect of sandfly fever virus Naples

Genomic and antigenic characterization of members of the Sandfly fever Naples virus (SFNV) complex reveals the presence of five clades that differ in their geographical distribution. Saint Floris and Gordil viruses, both found in Africa, form one clade; Punique, Granada and Massilia viruses, all isolated in the western Mediterranean, constitute a second; Toscana virus, a third; SFNV isolates from Italy, Cyprus, Egypt and India form a fourth; while Tehran virus and a Serbian isolate Yu 8/76, represent a fifth. Interestingly, this last clade appears not to express the second non-structural prote

Leishmania infantum is endemic in the Maltese archipelago, a group of islands in the Mediterranean which are visited frequently by tourists from Northern European countries. The burden of leishmaniasis is highest in children who may present with cutaneous or visceral manifestations. We describe systematically the manifestations, diagnosis and management of leishmaniasis in children <14 years of age, who had a histopathological diagnosis of leishmaniasis in Malta, from 2004 to 2008. Eleven children were diagnosed with leishmaniasis; 8 children (15-44 months of age) had visceral disease and thre

We report the first case of Sandfly virus meningitis in a Danish traveller returning from Tuscany. A 52 year-old man was admitted with headache, fever and photophobia. Spinal fluid showed evidence of aseptic meningitis. Indirect immuno-fluorescence assays showed presence of immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG antibodies reactive against Toscana virus, and Phlebovirus RNA was detected in blood by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The patient recovered spontaneously. Since Sandfly virus is a very common cause of meningitis in the Mediterranean countries, it is important to be aware of this disease i

It was found that in 50% of clinically diagnosed cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Damascus, microscopic examination failed to detect the presence of the amastigote form of the parasite inside the macrophages or in the extracellular media, i.e. 50% were false negative. However, in over 1000 photographs from 32 slides of 16 cases, the presence of microorganisms was noted in the extracellular fluid that did not match any of the known blood cells or components but did match the promastigote form as seen by general and electron microscopy. Since the promastigote form is not generally thought to

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) incidence has been increased in Italy in humans and dogs since the 1990s, with new foci being detected within traditional boundaries of endemic transmission but also in northern regions previously regarded as non-endemic. To monitor the putative VL spreading, surveillance was implemented in northern continental Italy comprising: analysis of human cases recorded from 1990 through 2005; retrospective literature analysis of canine leishmaniasis (CanL) and phlebotomine sandfly records through 2002; prospective investigations in dogs from 2003 through 2005 and surveys on

The risk for reintroduction of some exotic vector-borne diseases in Europe has become a hot topic, while the reality of others is neglected at the public health policy level. Leishmaniasis is endemic in all southern countries of Europe, with approximately 700 autochthonous human cases reported each year (3,950 if Turkey is included). Asymptomatic cases have been estimated at 30-100/1 symptomatic case, and leishmaniasis has up to 25% seroprevalence in domestic dogs. Even though leishmaniasis is essentially associated with Leishmania infantum and visceral leishmaniasis, new species, such as L. d

Leishmania major strains cause human cutaneous leishmaniasis in various arid regions in the Old World. Nevertheless, there is apparently no anthroponotic transmission even when the incidence of cases is very high and the involvement of reservoir animals is obligatory. To investigate this phenomenon we compared the development of L. major in Phlebotomus papatasi artificially infected with parasites in human, rabbit, or sand rat blood. The parasites, sandflies, and reservoir rodents came originally from the Jordan Valley. Following meals of promastigotes in human blood, parasites were retained i

A more than 60-case outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis was documented in the Geokchaĭ District of Azerbaijan between 1987 and 1988. The disease was noted in the rural areas only. All age groups were involved. The clinical picture of the disease was significantly different from anthropogenic cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. tropica but similar to cutaneous patterns caused by L. infantum which was a prevalent pattern in the southern France. Isoenzyme assay of the strain isolated in the Geokchaĭ causative agent defined it as Leishmania donovani sensu lato. Though an undoubted similarity of i

Chandipura virus (CHPV) has reemerged as a serious human pathogen related with acute encephalitis outbreaks. CHPV infection has been detected in various parts of Western, Central, and South India. In India, from June to August 2024, there were 245 reported cases of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) with 82 deaths and 64 confirmed cases of CHPV; being the largest outbreak in the recent times. Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia species of sandflies have been identified as potential vectors. The virus has been detected in the whole blood and/or CSF of patients using reverse-transcriptase polymerase cha
