Violent and disruptive behavior among drug-involved prisoners: relationship with psychiatric symptoms.

This study examines the relationship between psychiatric symptoms and violent/disruptive behavior among 192 inmates who participated in prison-based substance abuse treatment. Participants came from two sites able to provide narrative reports of disciplinary actions in the Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies' Co-Occurring Disorders Screening Instrument study. In multivariate logistic models, a lifetime history of thought insertion/control ideation (OR, 11.6; 95% CI, 1.8-75.2), antisocial personality disorder (OR, 3.3; 95% CI, 1.2-8.9), and disciplinary action related to possession of

Psychiatrically referred adolescents with panic attacks: presenting symptoms, stressors, and comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined presenting symptoms, precipitants and comorbidity in a sample of 28 adolescents (21 females, 7 males) who met criteria for clinically significant panic attacks. METHOD: A semistructured psychiatric interview was used to gather information about symptoms and precipitants, from which probable diagnoses were derived for each case. Thirteen subjects also completed a computerized version of the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents. RESULTS: The majority of cases (64%) were referred for anxiety related problems, although 36% presented with other symptoms

Temporal dynamics of costly avoidance in naturalistic fears: Evidence for sequential-sampling of fear and reward information.

Excessive avoidance is characteristic for anxiety disorders, even when approach would lead to positive outcomes. The process of how such approach-avoidance conflicts are resolved is not sufficiently understood. We examined the temporal dynamics of approach-avoidance in intense fear of spiders. Highly fearful and non-fearful participants chose repeatedly between a fixed no spider/low reward and a spider/high reward option with varying fear (probability of spider presentation) and reward information (reward magnitude). By sequentially presenting fear and reward information, we distinguished whet

Medical Student Syndrome and Imposter Syndrome: Are They Real?

Medical Student Syndrome and imposter syndrome are rampant in the medical profession, especially among young medical students. Medical Student Syndrome, also known as the third-year syndrome is a hypochondriacal concern in inexperienced medical students regarding the disease they are studying. Usually, it arises as a result of incomplete knowledge about the disease and regular exposure to new information about diseases. Imposter syndrome, on the other hand, refers to the behavioral pattern where medical students doubt their abilities and are constantly afraid of being exposed as a fraud. Impos

Color obsessions and phobias in autism spectrum disorders: the case of J.G.

The current study is the first investigation of color 'obsessions' and 'phobias' in ASD. We investigate the color perception and cognition of J.G., a boy with ASD who has a strong obsession with blue, and a strong phobia of other colors. J.G.'s performance on a series of color tasks (color-entity association; chromatic discrimination; color classification) is compared to 13 children with and without autism who do not have color obsessions or phobias. The findings lead to the formalization of two hypotheses: (i) color obsessions and phobias in individuals with ASD are related to an unusually st

[Melancholic syphilophobia: on the cultural history of venerology].

In the second half of the nineteenth century venereal diseases attained more attention and explosiveness in public discourse than ever before. Collective fear of the so-called French disease culminated in the emergence of melancholic syphilophobia a previously unknown form of hypochondriac suffering. This paper addresses the question of how this development occurred and focuses more specifically on the epistemological implications of the pathological fear of syphilis and highlights the systematic significance of etiological interpretation and nosological conceptualization of venereal disease.

The social phobia and anxiety inventory: problem of underlying medical conditions.

The study investigated the possibility of score inflation in the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory due to underlying medical conditions in respondents. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders provides an exclusionary rule disallowing a diagnosis of social phobia when the fear is based on the presence of a medical condition. A computer-administered procedure, designed to simulate visually this paper-and-pencil inventory was created and compared to the original in a pilot study with r of .94 between the two procedures. Analysis indicates such medically based responding is com

Social anxiety disorder: recent findings in the areas of epidemiology, etiology, and treatment.

Social anxiety disorder is a common and chronic disorder that leads to substantial psychosocial impairment. The disorder occurs early in childhood, and is frequently comorbid with a variety of other psychiatric diagnoses like depression, other anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and eating disorders. Given these serious implications of social anxiety disorder, early effective treatment is extremely important. Pharmacotherapy, with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and cognitive behavioral therapy are the first choice of treatments for social anxiety disorder. This paper reviews recent

Managing the anxious patient with advancing disease--a flow diagram.

Anxiety can be one aspect of the psychological reaction to cancer and may be present at a clinical level. It can hinder or even prevent the diagnosis and management of other problems and when it develops into an anxiety state it can be disabling. This flow diagram describes the key clinical decisions involved in diagnosing and helping a patient troubled with anxiety.

Failure to replicate evidence for phobic schemata in agoraphobic patients.

Two experiments incorporating methodological refinements were conducted to replicate previous findings that agoraphobics selectively recall phobic material compared with normal subjects. In addition, patients with anxiety states but no phobic symptomatology were studied to assess whether selective recall is specific to agoraphobia or a feature of anxious patients generally. The results of both studies failed to replicate previous findings and fail to offer support for recent theorizing regarding the presence of cognitive differences between agoraphobics and normals.

Treatment of spontaneous panic attacks with chlomipramine.

Recurrent spontaneous panic attacks are psychophysiological symptoms present in panic disorder and agoraphobia with panic attacks. Effective pharmacological treatment for panic attacks is essential to any treatment plan for these conditions. The authors administered chlomipramine to 20 patients who had panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic attacks, and after 8 weeks of treatment 75% of the patients with each diagnosis were asymptomatic. These results support the claim that chlomipramine is highly effective in preventing recurrence of panic attacks.

A Scoping Review on the Prevalence, Correlates, Predictors and Effects of Netlessphobia in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: The increasing reliance on internet connectivity has led to the emergence of netlessphobia, a psychological phenomenon characterized by the fear of being without internet access. Despite its growing relevance, limited research synthesizes evidence on its prevalence, correlates, effects and predictors. This scoping review is aimed at addressing this gap by mapping existing literature to comprehensively understand netlessphobia in Turkey. METHOD: This review followed Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework for conducting a scoping review. The following databases were searched
