Oscillatory potential changes related to stimulus intensity and light adaptation.

The oscillatory potentials (OPs) are a series of subcomponents of the flash ERG which probably originate in the inner plexiform layer of the retina. Abnormal OPs in various forms of retinopathy include central retinal vein occlusion, congenital stationary night blindness, and diabetic retinopathy. We investigated the effects of stimulus intensity and light adaptation on the OP components identified in our laboratory. OPs were recorded from 20 adult eyes to full-field ganzfeld stimulation at four stimulus intensities from 12 to 62 cd/m2. Stimulus flashes were superimposed over a steady backgrou

Relation of photosensitivity to epileptic syndromes.

Photosensitivity is the most common mode of seizure precipitation. It is age-related, more frequent in females, and most often found in generalised epilepsies. Little is known about its relation to individual epileptic syndromes. This study on 1062 epileptic patients who had 4007 split screen video EEG investigations revealed that the relation to generalised epilepsy is even more close than generally believed. Versive seizures with visual hallucinations was the only focal seizure type related to photosensitivity. Of the syndromes of generalised epilepsy, only childhood absence epilepsy, juveni

Flash electroretinogram abnormalities in patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis.

We studied the flash electroretinograms (ERGs) of 105 patients with multiple sclerosis who were divided into four groups. The first group had no history or clinical evidence of optic nerve dysfunction, the second and third groups had either left or right optic nerve disease respectively, and the fourth group had historical or clinical evidence of bilateral optic nerve disease. Statistical analysis of the data using analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the group of patients with no history or clinical evidence of optic nerve disease had no significant difference from the control group for t

Visual evoked potentials to binocular stimulation with disparate patterns.

Experiments with VEP to checkerboard stimulation in 4 subjects with normal stereoscopic vision showed that binocular interaction was the same for fused images and for linear pattern displacement induced by horizontal and vertical prisms, as long as the patterns were projected on the macular areas of both eyes. Also in a stereo-blind subject the impaired binocular VEP interaction remained unchanged during linear displacement of the patterns. Thus the previously reported differences in binocular VEP interaction between stereo-normal stereoblind subjects cannot be explained by binocular stimulati

Changes in the electro-encephalogram related to the menstrual cycle.

A comparison has been made between the electro-encephalograms (EEG) recorded in the premenstrual phase and those recorded at mid-cycle in 25 healthy young women. In only 5 could no difference be discerned visually between the two records obtained from each subject. Eight premenstrual records showed a significant increase in mean alpha frequency and 17 showed an increase in mean alpha amplitude. Theta activity and mild paroxysms were twice as common in premenstrual records, as was an abnormal response to hyperventilation. These findings may correlate with subjective mood changes commonly experi

Dark effect of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) on lymphocytes.

In order to find, whether 8-MOP has an inhibiting effect on the proliferation of lymphocytes in the dark, we studied in vitro the lymphocyte proliferation by a mitogen (HgCl2) and by an antigen (tuberculin) from 16 psoriatic patients during the first oral PUVA treatment immediately before 8-MOP intake (03.--0.5 mg/kg body weight), 2 h later (time of maximal serum concentration) and after 24 h. The percentages of B- and T-lymphocytes were measured from 15 other psoriatic patients at equal times. There was a significant decrease (P less than 0.05) of the lymphocyte proliferation after stimulatio

[Heat pulsation as a method of functional loading during electroencephalography].

In most of the normals who were studied with the aid of thermal pulsation there was an expressed shift of bioelectrical brain activity towards a synchronization. In patients with generalized epileptical fits and with mesodiencephalic lesions under the influence of thermal pulsation there was a distinct expression an increase of pathological activity. This effect obviously exceeded the results of a use of photostimulation and hyperventilation. In patients with focal lesions of the hemospheres the effectivity of of the method appeared to less.

Photosensitivity is an early marker of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify early clinical, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and electroencephalographic (EEG) characteristics … sent in 100% of patients at 3 years. EEGs revealed a photoparoxysmal response (PPR) on intermittent photic stimulation in 93% (13 of 14) of patients. PPR was present from the first EEG, which was performed at 3.6 (3.1-4.0) years, in 43% (six of 14) of patients; it was documented at low (1-3 Hz) stimulation frequencies in 69% (nine of 13) and took the form of a flash …

In vivo electrical stimulation of rabbit retina: effect of stimulus duration and electrical field orientation.

Information that defines the depth of activation of retinal neurons is useful in considering strategies for stimulation with a retinal prosthesis, or interpreting the results from human studies that have previously been performed. The purpose of this study was to test the assertion that electrical pulse durations >0.5 msec preferentially stimulate retinal neurons deep to the ganglion cell layer. Thirteen Dutch-belted rabbits (1.2-2.0 kg) were used in this study. A Goldmann-like dome was used to deliver photic stimuli to the retina to measure the electroretinogram (ERG) and the light-induced co

Image-guided localized proton magnetic resonance can now increasingly be used with clinical 1.5T MR systems. To fuel the discussion on wheth … he volunteers did not show significant interindividual variations, and there were no changes during photic stimulation in a subgroup of 6 volunteers. All tumor patients' spectra were significantly different from those of normal controls. Low grade gliomas showed decreased levels of N-acetyl-aspartate and some had elevated levels of lactate. Oligodendrogliomas had hi …

40 Hz steady-state visually evoked potentials recovered during oscillating transcranial electrical stimulation.

Background. Combining Transcranial Electrical Stimulation and Visual Stimulation at the gamma frequency of 40 Hz holds scientific and clinical potential, but requires concurrent electrophysiological measurement to quantify neuronal effects. This poses substantial methodological challenges: electrical stimulation artifacts largely overshadow EEG signals; gamma signals' amplitude is particularly low; and oculo-muscular confounds overlap in frequency. With appropriate artifact removal, we aimed to record 40 Hz Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) with EEG during frequency-matched elec

Sensitivity of late-latency auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials to threat of electric shock and the sedative drugs diazepam and diphenhydramine in human volunteers.

Late-latency auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials are sensitive to some centrally acting drugs and to certain psychological interventions. In this experiment we compared the effects of acute doses of a benzodiazepine, diazepam and an H(1) histamine receptor-blocking sedative, diphenhydramine, on auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials within the latency range 100-500 ms in a fear conditioning paradigm. Twelve healthy males (18-30 years) participated in three sessions at weekly intervals in which they received diazepam 10mg, diphenhydramine 75 mg and placebo in a balanced, double-b

The right hemisphere is independent from the left hemisphere in allocating visuospatial attention.

The capacity to allocate visuospatial attention is traditionally considered right-lateralized according to the effects of unilateral cerebral lesions. Contralateral hemi-spatial neglect occurs much more frequently after lesions of the right hemisphere, which has therefore been dubbed as 'dominant'. This pattern of symptoms is supported by functional models that postulate either independence or reciprocal influences between the two hemispheres. Here we specifically explored the dependency of the right hemisphere (RH) from the left hemisphere (LH) in spatial attention. We capitalized on the well

Timing-dependent modulation of the posterior parietal cortex-primary motor cortex pathway by sensorimotor training.

Interplay between posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and ipsilateral primary motor cortex (M1) is crucial during execution of movements. The purpose of the study was to determine whether functional PPC-M1 connectivity in humans can be modulated by sensorimotor training. Seventeen participants performed a sensorimotor training task that involved tapping the index finger in synchrony to a rhythmic sequence. To explore differences in training modality, one group (n = 8) learned by visual and the other (n = 9) by auditory stimuli. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to assess PPC-M1 conn

Pharmacodynamic interactions between seletracetam and antiseizure comedications in the human photosensitivity model.

We recently reported that seletracetam (SEL), a highly potent derivative of levetiracetam (LEV), reduces or abolishes the photoparoxysmal electroencephalographic response (PPR) to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) in patients with epilepsy. Most of the 27 patients in this study were on comedication with different antiseizure medications (ASMs). Here, we reanalyzed the raw data of this clinical trial to determine which, if any, of the ASMs reduced (or increased) the effect of SEL on PPR in individual patients. This was possible because a group of six patients were not taking any ASM, and gr…

Behavioural responses of threespine stickleback with lateral line asymmetries to experimental mechanosensory stimuli.

Behavioural asymmetry, typically referred to as laterality, is widespread among bilaterians and is often associated with asymmetry in brain structure. However, the influence of sensory receptor asymmetry on laterality has undergone limited investigation. Here we used threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to investigate the influence of lateral line asymmetry on laterality during lab simulations of three mechanosensation-dependent behaviours: predator evasion, prey localization and rheotaxis. We recorded the response of stickleback to impacts at the water surface and water flow in pho

The role of EEG in epilepsy: a critical review.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the most specific method to define epileptogenic cortex. Its sensitivity and specificity depend on several factors such as age and recording procedures, for example, sleep recordings and activation procedures (hyperventilation, photic stimulation). EEG reveals characteristic findings in several epilepsy syndromes. Rarely, epileptiform discharges are recorded in healthy, particularly young individuals. Ictal video/EEG recording is considered to be critical in localizing the epileptogenic zone. A careful analysis of the first clinical signs and symptoms of a seizu…
