INTRODUCTION: Management of anemia in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis is primarily based on predialysis hemoglobin measurements. However, hemoglobin concentrations vary substantially across the hemodialysis cycle because of interdialytic fluid accumulation, ultrafiltration-induced hemoconcentration, and ongoing plasma refilling. Consequently, hemoglobin values obtained at different time points are not physiologically equivalent and may reflect distinct circulatory states.
METHODS: This narrative review summarizes the physiological determinants of hemoglobin variation during the h

Internal bodily sensations such as an empty rumbling stomach can lead to enhanced desire for food - hunger. As an empty rumbling stomach is caused by digestive physiology, it is often presumed that such physiological processes also cause hunger. However, psychological processes could equally generate hunger (e.g., based on what the physiological signal has come to connote), and here we outline a method to test this idea. Participants were exposed to a stomach rumbling sound and control conditions (machine sound and silence) while they viewed pictures of food and everyday objects. For each pict

People with Down syndrome (DS) have abnormal vascular physiology, demonstrated by low systolic blood pressure (BP) and low aortic stiffness that are accompanied by endothelial dysfunction. The TcMAC21 mouse model of DS has many features observed in people with DS, although vascular physiology has not been studied. At 4 months old, male and female TcMAC21 mice exhibited lower systolic BP and aortic stiffness, as determined by aortic pulse wave velocity, which are accompanied by blunted carotid artery flow-mediated vasodilation, indicating endothelial dysfunction, compared to euploid (i.e., cont

Vitamin D has always been associated with calcium -phosphate metabolism, but vitamin D receptors or its metabolites have been found in different body cells, indicating a possible involvement in other physiological mechanisms. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with an increased risk of infections, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, asthma and certain neurological diseases such as schizophrenia. Currently there are different techniques for measuring 25 (OH) cholecalciferol in blood, but the results are variable and controversial. It is important to achieve standar

Previous studies indicate that route familiarity can adversely affect drivers' attentional states. However, few studies have examined how route familiarity affects attentional resource allocation using physiological measures. We investigated the effect of route familiarity on attentional resource allocation by measuring physiological indices during real-world road driving. Participants (n = 10) drove a vehicle on public roads on the same route over six days. We analyzed the eye-fixation-related brain potentials (EFRPs), auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs), and eye-blink duration from the electro

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is associated with psychological as well as physiological dysregulation in patients, including reduced parasympathetic activity at baseline and difficulties returning to baseline after a stressor. Whether this impacts the relaxation response independent of a stressor has so far not been investigated.
METHODS: In a within-subject design, we compared two relaxation interventions, a virtual reality nature video, and a paced breathing intervention. We assessed a female-only sample, with 20 BPD patients (meanage = 23.75 ± 4.39) during their inpat

Over the past fifty years, swine models have been used for organophosphorus intoxication studies. Among these studies and others on the swine model in general, some physiological data, especially cholinesterase activity highly impacted by organophosphorus compounds like nerve agent VX, still need to be completed. To support and compare our model to others, we have published the experimental protocol, the physiological values of 31 juvenile anesthetized pigs, and the 6 h-follow-up of six supplementary anesthetized control animals and 7 VX-intoxicated pigs. We reported hemodynamics and respirato

Iron deficiency is a major nutritional stress that severely impacts crop productivity worldwide. However, molecular intricacies and subsequent physiological and metabolic changes in response to Fe starvation, especially in leguminous crops like chickpea, remain elusive. In the present study, we investigated physiological, transcriptional, and metabolic reprogramming in two chickpea genotypes (H6013 and L4958) with contrasting seed iron concentrations upon Fe deficiency. Our findings revealed that iron starvation affected growth and physiological parameters of both chickpea genotypes. Comparati

Progression to a severe condition remains a major risk factor for the COVID-19 mortality. Robust models that predict the onset of severe COVID-19 are urgently required to support sensitive decisions regarding patients and their treatments. In this study, we developed a multivariate survival model based on early-stage CT images and other physiological indicators and biomarkers using artificial-intelligence analysis to assess the risk of severe COVID-19 onset. We retrospectively enrolled 338 adult patients admitted to a hospital in China (severity rate, 31.9%; mortality rate, 0.9%). The physiolo

Acute mesenteric ischemia is a surgical emergency with high morbidity and mortality rates. Therefore, it is important to determine the prognosis for this disease. In the present study, we aimed to compare the prediction accuracy of 3 scoring systems: Acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II, sequential organ failure assessment score and simplified acute physiology score II (SAPS II). The retrospective cohort study was conducted in a university hospital. Eighty-two acute mesenteric ischemia patients were evaluated retrospectively. The mortality prediction abilities of the scoring syste

OBJECTIVES: The 6-minute stepper test (6MST) is a submaximal test that requires little space to assess exercise capacity compared to the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). The study aims to investigate the test-retest reliability and convergent validity of 6MST and to compare physiological responses, dyspnea, fatigue perception with 6MST and 6MWT in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
METHODS: To test the convergent validity of 6MST, 65 patients performed both 6MWT and 6MST on the first day and correlation between two tests were assessed with Pearson correlation test. In order to investigate t

The purpose of this study was to investigate refraction at birth and during the first year of life in a large cohort of babies born in a single center in Northern Italy. We also aimed to analyze refractive errors in relation to the gestational age at birth. An observational ophthalmological assessment was performed within 24 h of birth on 12,427 newborns. Refraction was examined using streak retinoscopy after the administration of tropicamide (1%). Values in the range of between +0.50 ≤ D ≤ +4.00 were defined as physiological refraction at birth. Newborns with refraction values outside of the

The first-line psychological treatment for anxiety disorders is exposure therapy, which can be modeled in the laboratory using fear extinction. In healthy women, estradiol levels predict return of fear following extinction, whereas low levels are associated with greater return of fear. Investigating whether estradiol is similarly associated with extinction in clinically anxious women may provide insight to mechanisms underlying symptom relapse following exposure therapy. In the present study, women with spider phobia and healthy women participated in a 2-day fear conditioning and extinction pr

Folate receptor α (FRα) autoantibodies (FRAAs) are prevalent in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). They disrupt the transportation of folate across the blood-brain barrier by binding to the FRα. Children with ASD and FRAAs have been reported to respond well to treatment with a form of folate known as folinic acid, suggesting that they may be an important ASD subgroup to identify and treat. There has been no investigation of whether they manifest unique behavioral and physiological characteristics. Thus, in this study we measured both blocking and binding FRAAs, physiological measurements includin

OBJECTIVES: We examined the timing of physiological swallowing events in patients before and after completion of an exercise-based dysphagia intervention (McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program; MDTP) and compared their performance to that of healthy volunteers.
METHODS: Eight adults (mean age, 57.5 years) with chronic dysphagia (mean, 45 months) completed 3 weeks of the MDTP. Before and after the MDTP we measured lingual-palatal and pharyngeal manometric pressures during swallows of thin liquid, thick liquid, and pudding material in 5-mL volumes. Using the pressure peak of the pharyngoesophageal

BACKGROUND: The increasingly popular practice among adolescents and young adults of consuming alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmED) has raised concern regarding potential increases in maladaptive drinking practices, negative psychological and physiological intoxication side effects, and risky behavioral outcomes. Comparison of user types has revealed that AmED users report engaging in more risk-taking behavior relative to alcohol users. However, the comparative likelihood of risk-taking according to session type (i.e., AmED vs. alcohol session) remains relatively unknown. Thus, this study wa

Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle and, as such, is recommended during pregnancy. However, the response to exercise of both the expectant mother and fetus varies depending on the fitness level of the woman. The response to exercise is also affected by the known musculoskeletal and physiologic changes associated with pregnancy, such as increased ligament laxity, weight gain, change in the center of gravity, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Although the physiologic responses of the pregnant woman and fetus have been well studied, the literature contains comparatively few studie

Development of physiologic cardiac hypertrophy has primarily been ascribed to the IGF-1 and its receptor, IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R), and subsequent activation of the protein kinase B (Akt) pathway. However, regulation of endosome-mediated recycling and degradation of IGF-1R during physiologic hypertrophy has not been investigated. In a physiologic hypertrophy model of treadmill-exercised mice, we observed that levels of tumor susceptibility gene 101 (Tsg101), a key member of the endosomal sorting complex required for transport, were dramatically elevated in the heart compared with sedentary cont
