Therapeutic Role of Polyphenol Extract from Prunus cerasifera Ehrhart on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.

Prunus cerasifera Ehrhart (P. cerasifera) flourishes uniquely in the arid landscapes of Xinjiang, China. Preliminary studies have revealed the therapeutic potential of its polyphenol extract (PPE) in mitigating liver lipid accumulation in mice fed a high-fat diet. We established a mouse model that was subjected to a continuous high-fat diet for 24 weeks and administered PPE to investigate the effects of PPE on cholesterol and BA metabolism in NAFLD mice. The results showed that PPE administration (200 and 400 mg/kg/day, BW) led to a reduction in liver TC, an increase in liver T-BAs, and normal

Tracheal regeneration and mesenchymal stem cell augmenting potential of natural polyphenol-loaded gelatinmethacryloyl bioadhesive.

Hydrogels incorporating natural biopolymer and adhesive substances have extensively been used to develop bioactive drugs and to design cells encapsulating sturdy structure for biomedical applications. However, the conjugation of the adhesive in most hydrogels is insufficient to maintain long-lasting biocompatibility inadequate to accelerate internal organ tissue repair in the essential native cellular microenvironment. The current work elaborates the synthesis of charged choline-catechol ionic liquid (BIL) adhesive and a hydrogel with an electronegative atom rich polyphenol (PU)-laden gelatinm

The impact of a polyphenol-rich supplement on epigenetic and cellular markers of immune age: a pilot clinical study.

UNLABELLED: Age-related alterations in immune function are believed to increase risk for a host of age-related diseases leading to premature death and disability. Programming of the immune system by diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors occurs across the lifespan and influences both makeup and function of the immune system, including immunometabolism. This programming is believed to act in large part through epigenetic modification. Among dietary components that affect this process, polyphenols may play an outsized role. Polyphenols are a widely distributed group of plant nutrients consum…

Polyphenol Profile of Cistus × incanus L. and Its Relevance to Antioxidant Effect and α-Glucosidase Inhibition.

The European Food Safety Authority recommends C. incanus as a natural source of antioxidants. Its activity is essentially determined by polyphenols, although specific compounds are not finally indicated. The available plant material comes from different subspecies and locations, which can lead to differences in chemical composition and potency. For this reason, we conducted a detailed analysis of the polyphenol content and antioxidant activity of 52 different C. incanus teas from Turkey, Albania, Greece, and unspecified regions. We focused special attention on ellagitannins, which have not bee…

Polyphenol and glucosinolate-derived AhR modulators regulate GPR15 expression on human CD4+ T cells.

Diets high in fruit and vegetables are perceived to be beneficial for intestinal homeostasis, in health as well as in the context of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). Recent breakthroughs in the field of immunology have highlighted the importance of the ligand-activated transcription factor aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) as a critical regulator of mucosal immunity, including the intestinal trafficking of CD4+ helper T cells, an immune cell subset implicated in a wide range of homeostatic and pathogenic processes. Specifically, the AhR has been shown to directly regulate the expression of th

Multifunctional calcium polyphenol networks reverse the hostile microenvironment of trauma for preventing postoperative peritoneal adhesions.

Abdominal adhesions, a commonly observed complication of abdominal surgery, have a high incidence and adversely affect patients' physical and mental health. The primary causes of abdominal adhesions are intraoperative trauma, acute inflammatory response, bleeding, and foreign body infection. Because most current treatment approaches for abdominal adhesions are limited, improved and novel postoperative anti-adhesion regimens are urgently needed. In this study, we developed calcium polyphenol network (CaPN) microspheres based on the self-assembly of the natural triphenolic compound gallic acid a

Amphotericin B-Loaded Plant-Inspired Polyphenol Nanoparticles Enhance Its Antifungal Activity and Biocompatibility.

Amphotericin B (AmB) is one of the first-line treatments for systemic fungal infections, yet it suffers from dose-limiting systemic toxicity and high cost of less toxic lipid-based formulations. Here, we report on a facile approach to synthesize an AmB-loaded nanomedicine by leveraging plant-inspired oxidative self-polymerization of the ubiquitous polyphenol quercetin (QCT). Polymerized QCT nanoparticles (pQCT NPs) were formed, loaded with AmB, and functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to impart steric stability in a simple procedure that relied on mixing followed by dialysis. The Am

A Use of Tritium-Labeled Peat Fulvic Acids and Polyphenolic Derivatives for Designing Pharmacokinetic Experiments on Mice.

Natural products (e.g., polyphenols) have been used as biologically active compounds for centuries. Still, the mechanisms of biological activity of these multicomponent systems are poorly understood due to a lack of appropriate experimental techniques. The method of tritium thermal bombardment allows for non-selective labeling and tracking of all components of complex natural systems. In this study, we applied it to label two well-characterized polyphenolic compounds, peat fulvic acid (FA-Vi18) and oxidized lignin derivative (BP-Cx-1), of predominantly hydrophilic and hydrophobic character, re…

Endothelium-Independent Relaxation of Vascular Smooth Muscle Induced by Persimmon-Derived Polyphenol Phytocomplex in Rats.

The vasorelaxant effect of polyphenols is well known, and the mortality rate due to coronary artery disease is low in people who consume polyphenol-containing foods. We aimed to elucidate the mechanism by which polyphenols derived from persimmon juice (PJ) and persimmon leaves (PLs) induce vasorelaxation and suppress vasocontraction in the superior mesenteric arteries isolated from male Sprague Dawley rats. Vasocontraction was induced with 1 µM phenylephrine, and polyphenol-induced vasorelaxation was expressed as a percentage of the previous tone induced by phenylephrine. PJ powder (100 mg/L) …

Anti-adhesive activity of a Vaccinium corymbosum polyphenolic extract targeting intestinal colonization by Klebsiella pneumoniae.

The therapeutic effect of Vaccinium polyphenols against uropathogens has been widely studied. Most attention has focused on the antimicrobial activity against P-fimbriated Escherichia coli strains. The present study investigated the anti-adhesive and anti-biofilm activity of a saline extract of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) targeting intestinal colonization by a highly adherent Klebsiella pneumoniae strain. This strain, responsible for a large outbreak of infection in Spain, was selected on the basis of its remarkable capacity to colonize the gastrointestinal tract of patients. The blueberr…

Liver function monitoring: a prospective nested case-control study of Salvia miltiorrhiza polyphenol injection.

Instructions for Salvia miltiorrhiza polyphenol injections indicate abnormal liver function as an occasional adverse reaction, but the incidence of this adverse drug reaction (ADR) has increased in recent years. We assessed S. miltiorrhiza polyphenol ADRs by performing a nested case-control study(NCCS) and meta-analysis. In the NCCS, 2633 patients receiving this treatment in the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College were enrolled. Logistic regression models found that in 58 (2.2%) patients experiencing abnormal liver function, the risk for liver dysfunction was associated with su

The Polyphenol Pterostilbene Ameliorates the Myopathic Phenotype of Collagen VI Deficient Mice via Autophagy Induction.

The induction of autophagy, the catabolic pathway by which damaged or unnecessary cellular components are subjected to lysosome-mediated degradation and recycling, is impaired in Collagen VI (COL6) null mice and COL6-related myopathies. This autophagic impairment causes an accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria, which in turn leads to myofiber degeneration. Our previous work showed that reactivation of autophagy in COL6-related myopathies is beneficial for muscle structure and function both in the animal model and in patients. Here we show that pterostilbene (Pt)-a non-toxic polyphenol, ch
