Waterfowl Move Less in Heterogeneous and Human-Populated Landscapes, With Implications for Spread of Avian Influenza Viruses.

Animal movements contribute to the spread of infectious diseases and are driven in part by environmental conditions. We investigated the links among the environment, animal movement, and infectious disease dynamics in waterfowl, which are among the primary wildlife hosts of avian influenza viruses. By combining telemetry data on 4606 individuals from 26 waterfowl species with data on land cover, weather, and vegetation, we found that waterfowl moved less in areas of higher land cover heterogeneity and higher human population density. Moreover, predicted waterfowl movement distances were weakly…

Community Assembly Reveals How Environmental Controls Over Rodent Competition Drive Deer Mouse Density and Hantavirus Infection.

Host diversity can strongly influence disease prevalence, but whether it dilutes or amplifies disease remains debated. We applied community assembly theory to examine whether conditionality from abiotic and biotic filtering could explain variation in rodent diversity and Sin Nombre hantavirus (SNV) prevalence across 24 locations in the southwestern United States. Overall, community composition, not diversity per se, drove diversity-disease relationships. Environmental factors determined community composition, which regulated primary host abundance and SNV infection via resource competition. Ac

Environmental fluctuations alter the competitive trade-offs of group size in a social primate.

Larger animal groups are widely understood to require more space and expend more energy to mitigate the foraging costs of within-group competition. Yet between-group interactions and shifting resource distributions can obscure links between group size and behaviour, making responses to demographic change difficult to predict. Here, using 33 years of observational data from 12 neighbouring white-faced capuchin (Cebus imitator) groups in Costa Rica, combined with remotely sensed environmental data, we show that within- and between-group competition jointly shape space use, with their relative im

Inventory of helminth parasites in Caatinga anurans from Northeastern Brazil.

Biological inventories are essential tools for understanding parasite diversity. In this study, we describe the helminth parasite communities associated with anuran amphibians from five localities within the Caatinga domain of Northeastern Brazil. A total of 1,198 individuals, belonging to 22 species and six anuran families (Bufonidae, Hylidae, Leptodactylidae, Microhylidae, Odontoprhynidae, and Phyllomedusidae), were examined. Of these, 629 specimens (52.5%) were parasitized, and 27,004 helminths were recovered. The helminths represented 34 taxa, including 24 Nematoda, 7 Digenea, 1 Cestoda, a

Nowcasting Vector Mosquito Abundance and Determining Its Association With Malaria Epidemics in South Korea.

Since a resurgence occurred in 1993, malaria has remained an endemic disease in the Republic of Korea (ROK). A major challenge is the inaccessibility of current vector mosquito abundance data due to a 2-week reporting delay, which limits timely implementation of control measures. We aimed to nowcast mosquito abundance and assess its utility by evaluating the predictive value of mosquito abundance for malaria epidemic peaks. We used machine learning models to nowcast mosquito abundance, employing gradient boosting models (GBMs), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), and an ensemble model combining b

Effects of strain and stocking density on leg health, activity, and use of enrichments in conventional broiler chicken production.

Conventional broiler production needs to evolve towards more animal-friendly production systems in order to meet increasing consumer concerns regarding animal welfare. Genetics and stocking density are 2 of the most promising leads to make this change possible. In this study, 6 strains with different growth rates (42-61 g/d) were reared at contrasting densities: 37 kg/m² (HD) and 29 kg/m² (LD). At the same body weight of 1.80-1.95 kg, we evaluated how growth rate and stocking density influenced broiler behaviors (general activity, interactions with enrichments), broiler health (mortality, leg

Abundance and antibiotic resistance of Aeromonas isolated from the water of three carp ponds.

Abundance and antibiotic resistance of bacteria of the genus Aeromonas isolated from the water of three carp ponds were studied. The number of those bacteria differed between the studied ponds, sites and season. The results of the present study showed that planktonic Aeromonas inhabiting those ponds strongly differed in the resistance level to tested antibiotics. These microorganisms were the most resistant to amoxicillin, ampicillin, clindamycin and penicillin. However, all isolates Aeromonas were susceptible to gentamycin and streptomycin. Majority of bacterial strains were characterized by

Estimating the Population Size of People Who Inject Drugs in Malaysia for 2014 and 2017 Using the Benchmark-Multiplier Method.

Background: As hepatitis C elimination efforts are launched, national strategies for screening and treatment scale-up in countries, such as Malaysia, must be designed and implemented. Strategic information, including estimates of the total number of patients chronically-infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the size of key populations, such as people who inject drugs (PWID), is critical to informing these efforts. For Malaysia, the estimate of the PWID population size most frequently reported in global systematic reviews is for the year 2009. Objectives: To support ongoing national HCV pla

Parasite prevalence increases with temperature in an avian metapopulation in northern Norway.

Climate and weather conditions may have substantial effects on the ecology of both parasites and hosts in natural populations. The strength and shape of the effects of weather on parasites and hosts are likely to change as global warming affects local climate. These changes may in turn alter fundamental elements of parasite-host dynamics. We explored the influence of temperature and precipitation on parasite prevalence in a metapopulation of avian hosts in northern Norway. We also investigated if annual change in parasite prevalence was related to winter climate, as described by the North Atla

Population Size Dependency of Measles Epidemic That Was Scalable from Japanese Prefectures to European Countries.

The relationship between the number of measles patients (y) and the population size (x) was expressed by the equation y=axs, where a is a constant and s the slope of the plot; s was 2.04-2.17 for prefectures in Japan, i.e., the number of patients was proportional to the square of the population size of the prefecture. For European countries that joined the European Union (EU) no later than 2009, the slope was 1.43-1.87. The population dependency of measles found among prefectures in Japan was thus scalable to European countries. This was surprising because, unlike Japan, the population densiti

Evidence for increasing densities and geographic ranges of tick species of public health significance other than Ixodes scapularis in Québec, Canada.

Climate change is driving emergence and establishment of Ixodes scapularis, the main vector of Lyme disease in Québec, Canada. As for the black-legged tick, I. scapularis Say, global warming may also favor northward expansion of other species of medically important ticks. The aims of this study were to determine (1) current diversity and abundance of ticks of public health significance other than I. scapularis, (2) sex and age of the human population bitten by these ticks (3), and the seasonal and geographic pattern of their occurrence. From 2007 to 2015, twelve tick species other than I. scap

Modelling the impact of targeted anthelmintic treatment of cattle on dung fauna.

The insecticidal properties of many anthelmintics pose a risk to dung fauna through the effects of drug residues in dung on the activity, oviposition and development of dung-dwelling invertebrates. Reductions in dung fauna numbers can inhibit dung degradation, which may impact biodiversity and nutrient cycling on farms. A simulation model was created to predict the impact of antiparasitic drugs on cattle dung fauna, and calibrated using published data on the dung-breeding fly Scathophaga stercoraria. This model was then tested under different effective dung drug concentrations (EC) and proport
