The practice of puxa-puxa among Mozambican women: a systematic inventory of motives.

Puxa-puxa is the elongation of the labia minora of the genital organs. It is one of the most widespread genital practices among women in Mozambique, and the practice seems to be specific to this country. The motives underlying this practice and its abandonment were examined in a theory-driven way. A total of 616 women currently living in the provinces of Maputo, Zambezia, and Nampula, aged 18 to 62, were presented with one of two questionnaires that contained items about possible motives for practicing puxa-puxa or possible motives for not practicing it. Seven separable motives for practicing

Using graded motor imagery for complex regional pain syndrome in clinical practice: failure to improve pain.

BACKGROUND: There is good evidence from studies conducted in a single-centre research setting for the efficacy of graded motor imagery (GMI) treatment, a complex physiotherapy intervention, to reduce pain in long-standing complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). However, whether GMI is effective in clinical practice is not established. AIM: To establish whether GMI is effective in clinical practice. METHODS: We undertook a prospective audit of GMI treatment at two UK centres with a special interest in the management of patients with CRPS. All patients received GMI, in conjunction with a range

Effects of extended practice and unitization on relational memory in older adults and neuropsychological lesion cases.

Unitization - the fusion of objects into a single unit through an action/consequence sequence - can mitigate relational memory impairments, but the circumstances under which unitization is effective are unclear. Using transverse patterning (TP), we compared unitization (and its component processes of fusion, motion, and action/consequence) with extended practice on relational learning and transfer in older adults and neuropsychological cases with lesions (to varying extents) in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) or hippocampus/medial temporal lobe (HC/MTL). The latter included a person with b

Learning in repeated visual search.

Visual search (e.g., finding a specific object in an array of other objects) is performed most effectively when people are able to ignore distracting nontargets. In repeated search, however, incidental learning of object identities may facilitate performance. In three experiments, with over 1,100 participants, we examined the extent to which search could be facilitated by object memory and by memory for spatial layouts. Participants searched for new targets (real-world, nameable objects) embedded among repeated distractors. To make the task more challenging, some participants performed search

Guidelines for the psychosocial evaluation of living unrelated kidney donors in the United States.

Under the auspices of the United Network for Organ Sharing, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the American Society of Transplantation, a meeting was convened on May 25, 2006, in Washington, DC, to develop guidelines for the psychosocial evaluation of prospective living kidney donors who have neither a biologic nor longstanding emotional relationship with the transplant candidate. These 'unrelated' donors are increasingly often identified by transplant candidates via the Internet, print media and other public appeals. The expansion of living donor kidney transplantation to include

[Burnout among dentists: a question of coping].

Work stress and burnout are considered to be serious professional risks in dentistry. This study investigated the relation between a dentist's coping style and burnout level. It was hypothesized that dentists characterized by an active coping style would show relatively low burnout levels, whereas dentists characterized by a passive coping style would show relatively high burnout levels. From a survey among 709 active general dental practitioners, who filled out the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Utrecht Coping List, this hypothesis was supported. It was concluded that coping style could ex

Learning to take up space: A mindfulness reflection.

The attitudes of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, nonjudging, patience, trust, beginner's mind, nonstriving, and letting go, offer valuable guidance for today's strained health care environments. These principles gradually informed the development of a Nurse Practitioner (NP) and Physician Associate (PA) Fellowship program designed to support NPs and PAs transitioning into complex specialty neurology practice. Mindfulness became the fellowship's implicit foundation, encouraging psychological safety, reciprocity, and belonging. This reflection examines how mindfulness informed the fellowship

Maternal perception of first-born infants: a controlled comparative study of mothers of premature and full-term infants.

Mothers of premature infants monitored at home for apnea and mothers of full-term infants had significantly more positive perceptions of their infants than mothers of premature infants not monitored. Using the Brief Symptom Inventory 2 weeks after the infants went home from the hospital, the mothers of infants not monitored reported significantly more psychological symptoms than the other two groups. Maternal perceptions of their infants had not changed when interviewed 6 months later. Implications for nursing practice are discussed.

Sustaining educational and psychological support during protracted war: a regional laboratory model from Ukraine.

Protracted wars create challenges that extend beyond immediate educational disruption and humanitarian response. As crisis conditions become embedded within everyday life, educational communities must continuously adapt to emerging psychological, social, and educational needs affecting children, families, teachers, and schools. While existing research in Education in Emergencies (EiE) and school-based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) has substantially expanded the understanding of child wellbeing and intervention strategies during crises, considerably less attention has been devo

Comparison of geriatric assessment with provider's clinical assessment among older adults with gastroesophageal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with gastroesophageal cancer (GEC) frequently visit oncology practices, but provider assessments often overlook critical geriatric factors. This study compares the effectiveness of a geriatric assessment (GA) versus routine provider assessment (PA) in evaluating these patients. METHODS: Patients (≥ 65 years) actively undergoing therapy for GEC completed a GA, while providers conducted a baseline PA. Both assessments identified abnormalities across multiple geriatric domains, including functional status, nutrition, comorbidities, psychological distress, cognition, soci

Evaluation of the Critical Care Team Training and Clinical Excellence (TTrACE) Academy.

Purpose: Sustaining high-functioning interprofessional teamwork in intensive care settings is essential for patient safety, workforce well-being, and reliable care delivery. However, evidence regarding the role of structured team training interventions in already high-performing critical care teams remains limited. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the Team Training and Clinical Excellence Academy (TTrACE), a structured interprofessional team training program, on collaboration, psychological safety, need satisfaction, and team effectiveness in a critical care setting. Associations between perceived school climate and close friend support among Chinese high school students: a cross-sectional serial indirect-effect analysis of exercise-related basic psychological needs satisfaction and self-esteem.

BACKGROUND: Close friend support is a key emotional and coping resource during adolescence, yet less is known about the psychological variables that may statistically account for its association with students' perceived school climate. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 1,380 Chinese high school students aged 15-18 years from five senior high schools in Shihezi, Xinjiang, China. Perceived school climate was measured using the 12-item school climate component of the Abbreviated Dual School Climate and School Identification Measure-Student; basic psychological needs satisfacti

A systematic review and pooled prevalence of symptoms among childhood and adolescent and young adult cancer survivors.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the existing literature reporting symptoms in childhood and adolescent and young adult cancer survivors and to meta-analyse the pooled prevalence of symptoms. BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors experience various symptoms caused by cancer treatments and their late effects. These symptoms are associated with adverse health outcomes. However, estimates of symptom prevalence vary largely, and no comprehensive review of symptoms has been conducted for childhood and adolescent and young adult cancer survivors. DESIGN: A systematic review. METHODS: This sys

Psychological distress and quality of life: rationale and protocol of a prospective cohort study in a rural district in Bangaladesh.

INTRODUCTION: A significant proportion of the global burden of disease has been attributed to mental and behavioural disorders. People with mental disorders (MDs) have lower levels of health-related quality of life than those without MDs. Several studies have shown that in low-resource countries, a range of social determinants including poor health literacy is critical in the epidemiological transition of disease outcome. There is a lack of evidence of MDs literacy, the prevalence and risk factors of common mental health conditions, or any validated instruments to measure psychological distres

How does parental psychological control influence adolescent depression? A sequential mediation and network analysis of smartphone addiction and sleep disturbance.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of depression among children and adolescents has become a critical global public health challenge requiring urgent attention. Emerging evidence suggests that parental psychological control (PPC) may be a significant risk factor for the development of depression in adolescents. Nevertheless, the intricate mechanisms linking parental psychological control to adolescent depression remain largely unresolved. This study aims to explore the association between parental psychological control and depression using a large sample of adolescents, and to determine whether
