Trisomy 5 as the sole cytogenetic aberration in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is exceedingly rare. As such, its prognostic and therapeutic relevance remains unknown. We report a case of an 18-year-old young man who was diagnosed with B cell ALL with trisomy 5 as the sole chromosomal abnormality. He was treated with chemotherapy and went into complete remission. On the 14th month of treatment, he relapsed with central nervous system involvement characterised by leukaemic infiltration of the optic nerve and facial palsy. He subsequently underwent reinduction chemotherapy with aggressive in

Nowadays, minimal residual disease (MRD) is accepted as the strongest independent prognostic factor in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). It can be detected by molecular methods that use leukemia-specific or patient-specific molecular markers (fusion gene transcripts, or immunoglobulin/T-cell receptor [IG/TR] gene rearrangements), and by multi-parametric flow cytometry. The sensitivity and specificity of these methods can vary across treatment time points and therapeutic settings. Thus, knowledge of the principles and limitations of each technology is of the utmost importance for correct inte

OBJECTIVE: Interleukin 7 (IL-7) and its receptor(IL-7R)are essential for normal T-cell development and homeostasis. This study was aimed to investigate the IL-7R mutation and its clinical significance in adult patients with adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), particularly in T-ALL.
METHODS: The exons of IL-7R were amplified, cloned and sequenced in 144 adult patients with ALL; the frequency, position and lypes of IL-7R mutation were detected and their correlation with clinical features was analyzed.
RESULTS: 7.3% of T-ALL and 1.1% of B-ALL showed somatic IL-7R mutations which located a

Acute leukemia is a severe disease frequently encountered in childhood, often diagnosed in later stages because of nonspecific symptoms. It is known to produce uptake in bone scan, and previously described patterns have shown symmetrical abnormalities. However, we report the unusual aspect of the bone scan in a 3-year-old child who was referred to explore an isolated pain of his lower left limb, with hyperthermia and markers of inflammation. A bone scan showed an intense, asymmetrical uptake of the entire left femur. A few days later, his blood count showed circulating blast cells, leading to

INTRODUCTION: Recognizing early symptoms of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) may help to make an early diagnosis. The objective of this study is to identify clinical manifestations preceding the diagnosis of childhood ALL from the maternal perspective and to establish the time elapsed from the first manifestation to the diagnosis.
CASE STUDY: Six hospitals located in Bogotá and Bucaramanga (Colombia) participated. Cases consisted of children under 15 years old with incidental diagnosis of ALL between January 2000 and March 2005. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, pre diagnostic clini

Lymphoid neoplasms of the orbit account for approximately 6-8 % of all orbital tumors and 15 % of all ocular adnexal tumors. We report an unusual case of T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma occurring in a 30-year-old man, presenting as red, painless, firm swelling in the Tenon's capsule of the eye.

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is rarely reported in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and may be difficult to differentiate from vincristine induced neuropathy. We report two children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on induction chemotherapy who developed GBS. The diagnostic issues and potential pathogenic mechanisms underlying GBS in pediatric patients with ALL are discussed.

A 6-year-old girl presented at the emergency department with increasing swellings of multiple lymph nodes over the past 3 days, without other complaints. At physical examination an impressive general lymphadenopathy was seen without any other abnormalities. The peripheral blood smear showed 86% lymphoblasts. She was diagnosed with B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Pathogenesis acute lymphoblastic leukaemia ( ALL ) in adults is not well understood, as it is more common in children. We examined the immunological status and the activity of certain enzymes in blood lymphocytes in adult patients of ALL at different stages.
METHODS: ALL patients (n=71) admitted during 2000-2005 were included in this study. All patients had decreased T-lymphocytes content. At first attack, they had CD4 + -cells decreasing and increasing IgM and IgG concentration. In complete remission all examined parameters were low. The peculiarities of ALL recurren

Molluscum contagiosum is an infectious disease presenting with flesh-colored, dome-shaped, umblicated papules. A few atypical presentations have been reported in immunodeficient patients. A 5-year-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, presented with bright white-colored papular lesions with no umblications on the chin during his continuation chemotherapy. Increased number of the lesions covered almost his entire chin in months. Topical therapies did not improve the lesions. After his bone marrow relapse, induction chemotherapy was withheld because of bronchopneumonia after febrile neutrop

Through a variety of different mechanisms, it appears that survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia have an increased prevalence of several cardiovascular risk factors and thus are at increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease. The aim of this paper is to describe the current understanding of particular risk factors, including obesity, physical inactivity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome, that may contribute to cardiovascular disease in survivors of childhood ALL. The potential roles of different cancer therapies in the development of these risk fa

Sturge-Weber syndrome belongs to the group of neuroektomesodermal diseases, so called facomatoses. In contrast to other diseases of this group, there are not any proofs of the genetic determinated background of the syndrome, as well as the higher frequency of cancer. However, the higher frequency of benign astrocytomas was observed. The presented case of the coincidence of the Sturge-Weber syndrome and acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the second case described in the literature. The authors present the therapeutical problems, associated with glaucoma and epilepsy in the course of this syndrome.

We report a 6-year-old boy who was diagnosed as having neuron-specific enolase (NSE)-positive pro-T cell type lymphoblastic lymphoma preceded with a variety of symptoms such as skin rash, giant splenomegaly, and hyper-gamma globulinemia. He first showed cervical lymphadenopathy in June 1999, followed by a fever of unknown origin with atypical erythema, hepatosplenomegaly, and a few lymphoblastoid cells present in the bone marrow in September. However, no specific treatments were started at this point because a cervical lymph node biopsy failed to show malignancy and the patient's signs and sym

The hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is defined by a longer than 6-month history of peripheral blood hypereosinophilia (greater than 1.5 x 10(9)/L), with signs and symptoms of internal organ involvement, in the absence of an identifiable cause. HES is therefore a diagnosis of exclusion. Patients have been reported who initially met the criteria for HES but subsequently developed a rare hematologic malignancy known as acute lymphoblastic leukemia with eosinophilia (ALL-Eo). We report such a case in a 10-year-old boy who presented to the pediatric dermatology clinic with unusual, urticarial skin
