OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term changes of masseter muscle morphology in skeletal Class III patients with facial asymmetry following two-jaw orthognathic surgery (Le Fort I osteotomy + intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using computed tomography (CT), a longitudinal study was conducted on 17 skeletal Class III patients with facial asymmetry. Measurements from the reconstructed three-dimensional (3D) CT images were compared from T1 (before surgery), T2 (1 year after surgery), and T3 (4 years after surgery). The maximum cross-sectional area (CSA), orientation, thic

Orthognathic surgery is a well-documented clinical procedure for patients who complain of functional and aesthetic problems related to dento-facial imbalance. The aims of treatment are to establish facial harmony, normalise function and maximise the stability of the outcome. Conventional diagnostic aids to treatment include plain film radiographs and photographs which provide a static analysis of the facial structures at a particular point in time. Functional assessment of facial movement is rarely performed but could have important implications on the stability of the surgery through post-sur

This study was conducted on lateral cephalograms and magnetic resonance images (MRIs) obtained from 20 subjects with Class III malocclusion. Only clinically temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptom-free subjects were included in this study. In the treatment group, a chin cup with 600 g of force was applied in 13 patients (10 girls and three boys) with a mean age of nine years. The chin cup was applied in a direction from the chin toward the TMJ. The control group consisted of seven patients (six girls and one boy) with a mean age of eight year nine months. Orthodontic treatment was not applied in

Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS, OMIM 182290) is a complex syndromic diagnosis marked by neurobehavioral differences and distinct facial dysmorphisms, caused by haploinsufficiency of the retinoic acid-1 (RAI1) gene either by a pathogenic sequence variant or deletion at chromosome 17p11.2 involving a portion or all of this gene. Dysmorphisms may include a broad square face and brachycephaly, heavy eyebrows, a full mouth with an everted upper lip, and early micrognathia evolving to prognathism after excessive relative mandibular growth. All patients with SMS have variable global cognitive impairment…

In this study, to clarify the influence of the maxillo-mandibular bones and cranium on airway morphology, maxillo-facial morphology in patients with jaw deformation was measured using cephalograms and X-ray CT imaging data. Subjects consisted of 25 adult women in whom cephalograms and X-ray CT were taken to diagnose jaw deformation. The data obtained were classified based on skeletal and facial patterns according to Ricketts analysis, and changes in internal diameter, height and volume of the middle pharyngeal airway were observed. The results showed that the internal diameter of the inferior

Ellis-van Creveld (EvC) and Curry-Hall (CH) syndromes are rare syndromes that occur due to mutations of genes mapped to the chromosome 4p16 region. Hence, they both have few features that are common. The dental literature describing the oral manifestations and etiology of both syndromes is scarce. We report a case of a 7-year-old girl who appeared with features that are common to both syndromes, as well as with other features such as reduced cranial base flexure and toes of equal length with skeletal changes that have not been mentioned or described in earlier reports. The patient possibly rep

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an uncommon, generalized skeletal disorder characterized by delayed ossification of the skull, aplastic or hypoplastic clavicles, and serious, complex dental abnormalities. There are many difficulties in the early diagnosis of CCD because a majority of the craniofacial abnormalities becomes obvious only during adolescence. In the present case, a hypoplastic midface, a relative prognathia of the mandible, and close approximation of the shoulders in the anterior plane were the conspicuous extraoral findings. Prolonged exfoliation of the primary dentition, unerupt

A concensus conference on the timing of facial osteotomies was held in Jönköping, Sweden. Seven teams consisting of a maxillofacial surgeon and an orthodontist representing five countries discussed treatment planning for young patients with maxillomandibular deformities with special emphasis on timing. Patients with severe syndromic facial deformities were not considered. Consensus was reached that for most deformities it is best advised to wait until growth has ceased, as determined by longitudinal cephalometric data. This rule is less tight for Angle Class II than for Class III cases. For as

Biological research related to orthodontics naturally leads to two general areas. One is the investigation of craniofacial growth and development in normal and abnormal circumstances, attempting to understand the etiological basis for the development of malocclusion or dentofacial deformity. The other concerns developing an understanding of the basic mechanisms involved in tooth movement during orthodontic therapy. This paper reviews ongoing research in both areas.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons now have the capabilities to plan a total treatment for the entire face. In some instances, a team may be formed to deal with ancillary areas of expertise. Patients may be directed to members of the team who are cognizant of each other's capabilities. In this manner, the most complete type of treatment plan may be suggested to the patient.

BACKGROUND: Prominent lower front teeth may be associated with a large or prognathic lower jaw (mandible) or a small or retrusive upper jaw (maxilla). Edward Angle, who may be considered the father of modern orthodontics, classified the malocclusion in this situation as Class III. The individual is described as having a negative or reverse overjet as the lower front teeth are more prominent than the upper front teeth.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate different treatments of Angle Class III malocclusion in adults.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess long-term changes in position of soft tissue landmarks following mandibular advancement and setback surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven patients (14 women, 13 men; mean age, 36 years) who had undergone either mandibular advancement (15 patients) or setback surgery (12 patients), were available for a long-term follow-up an average of 12 years postoperatively. In all of these cases, lateral cephalometric radiographs taken immediately before operation, at 1 week, 14 months, and 12 years postoperatively, were studied.
RESULTS: During the 14 m

AIM: To describe the use of miniplates for temporary skeletal anchorage to distalise the entire lower dentition.
METHODS: A 40 year-old woman presented with a skeletal Class III malocclusion and multiple missing maxillary and mandibular teeth. The treatment plan was to distalise the mandibular dentition. Two miniplates and screws in the mandibular retromolar region were used as temporary skeletal anchorage for Class I elastics. The entire lower dentition was distalised into a Class I incisor relationship with the miniplate and screw anchorage.

PURPOSE: The current study evaluated the incidence of subjective neurosensory disturbances after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) in relation to gender, age, indication for osteotomy, magnitude of mandibular movement, degree of manipulation of the inferior alveolar nerve at operation, side of the mandible operated, and complications during and after surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients (60 sides) who had undergone a BSSO were followed up for 1 year after operation. The patients were classified into different groups according to gender, age, indication for osteotomy, magnitu

This study aimed to evaluate the stability of lingual plate osteotomy after sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) in patients with severe facial asymmetry. It included 20 patients undergoing lingual plate osteotomy between January 2011 and January 2017. Cephalometric X-ray imaging and three-dimensional computed tomography (3DCT) were performed before the operation and then 1 day and 1 year after the operation. The relapse rate and postoperative complications were assessed. The operation time was compared between lingual plate osteotomy and transoral angle osteotomy. Specific values measured on
