Gamblers seeking online help are active help-seekers: Time to support autonomy and competence.

Research investigating rates of help-seeking for problem gambling has traditionally focused on the uptake of face-to-face gambling services alone, despite the World Health Organisation defining help-seeking as any action or activity undertaken to improve or resolve emotional, psychological or behavioural problems. The primary aim of this study is to examine the full range of help-seeking options utilised by gamblers, and to determine whether administering a comprehensive list of help options yields higher help-seeking rates than a single item measure. A one-item and expanded 14-item help-seeki

What psychological and physical changes predict patients' attainment of personally meaningful goals six months following a CBT based pain management intervention?

PURPOSE: To examine the influence of demographic measures, and changes in physical ability, pain, self-efficacy and emotional distress on Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) scores, after a 15-day CBT based pain management programme. METHOD: Chronic pain patients (N = 257) were referred; 225 (88%) completed the programme and were invited for follow up six months later. One hundred and sixty-two (63%), (mean age 47.7, 71% female) completed the reassessment procedures. GAS scores (which were also repeated at the end the programme), an 11-point Pain Numerical Rating Scale, Pain Self-Efficacy Questionn

SMARTphone-based, early cardiac REHABilitation in patients with acute coronary syndromes [SMART-REHAB Trial]: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: There are well-documented treatment gaps in secondary prevention of coronary heart disease and no clear guidelines to assist early physical activity after acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Smartphone technology may provide an innovative platform to close these gaps. This paper describes the study design of a randomized controlled trial assessing whether a smartphone-based secondary prevention program can facilitate early physical activity and improve cardiovascular health in patients with ACS. METHODS: We have developed a multi-faceted, patient-centred smartphone-based secondary pre

Quality of life in chronic myeloid leukaemia patients after haematopoietic cell transplantation pretreated with second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The majority of patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) respond to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), while allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is indicated in selected clinical situations. HCT carries the risk of severe complications, while the toxicity profile of dasatinib and nilotinib may lead to adverse reactions affecting the quality of life (QoL). We present the results of observational analysis of CML patients who underwent HCT after exposure to second-generation TKI (TKI2), with respect to their quality of life assessed comparatively after trans

Visual signs and symptoms in patients with the visual variant of Alzheimer disease.

BACKGROUND: Prominent visual symptoms can present in the visual variant of Alzheimer's disease (VVAD). Ophthalmologists have a significant role to play in the early diagnosis of VVAD. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the files of ten consecutive patients diagnosed with VVAD. All patients had a full neuro-ophthalmologic examination, a formal neurological and neuro-psychological testing, and cerebral MRI to confirm diagnosis. In addition, functional neuroimaging was obtained in seven patients. RESULTS: The common primary symptom at presentation with all patients was difficulty with near vi

Residential greenness and birth outcomes: evaluating the influence of spatially correlated built-environment factors.

BACKGROUND: Half the world's population lives in urban areas. It is therefore important to identify characteristics of the built environment that are beneficial to human health. Urban greenness has been associated with improvements in a diverse range of health conditions, including birth outcomes; however, few studies have attempted to distinguish potential effects of greenness from those of other spatially correlated exposures related to the built environment. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate associations between residential greenness and birth outcomes and evaluate the influence of spati

Factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression amongst internally displaced persons in northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The 20 year war in northern Uganda between the Lord's Resistance Army and the Ugandan government has resulted in the displacement of up to 2 million people within Uganda. The purpose of the study was to measure rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression amongst these internally displaced persons (IDPs), and investigate associated demographic and trauma exposure risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional multi-staged, random cluster survey with 1210 adult IDPs was conducted in November 2006 in Gulu and Amuru districts of northern Uganda. Levels of exposure to traum

Key insights into biosecurity risks, communication preferences and behaviour change drivers among livestock transporters in Australia.

The transportation of livestock poses an increased risk of disease transmission, with transportation vehicles acting as vectors for disease. Biosecurity management within the livestock industry is therefore critical to reduce the risk of disease transmission. This study investigated the current biosecurity practices of stakeholders within the livestock transport industry in Australia using a cross-sectional study. It examined how communications technology is utilised in this sector, exploring the drivers and barriers influencing the adoption of communications technology for managing biosecurit

Big Five Personality Traits and Life Satisfaction as Predictors of Parental Burnout in Parents of Children With Central Auditory Processing Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) face stressors related to their children's communication and learning difficulties. Currently, no research has explored how personality traits influence burnout among parents of children with CAPD. AIMS: This study investigated the relationships between parental burnout, the Big Five personality traits, and life satisfaction among parents of children with CAPD. METHODS: There were 248 parents (197 mothers, 51 fathers) of children with CAPD (Mage = 11 years) who participated. We analyzed three subgroups of parent

Machine Learning Methods to Track Dynamic Facial Function in Facial Palsy.

OBJECTIVE: For patients with facial palsy, the wait for return of facial function and resulting vision risk from poor eye closure, difficulty speaking and eating from flaccid oral sphincter muscles, and psychological morbidity from the inability to smile or express emotions can be devastating. There are limited methods to assess ongoing facial nerve regeneration: clinicians rely on subjective descriptions, imprecise scales, and static photographs to evaluate facial functional recovery. We propose a more precise evaluation of dynamic facial function through video-based machine learning analysis

Does parental mental health mediate the association between parents' perceived stress and parent-infant bonding during the early COVID-19 pandemic?

BACKGROUND: The spread of the COVID-19 virus was declared a pandemic in March 2020. New restrictions such as 'lockdowns' and 'social distancing' created challenges for individuals' work-life balance, financial situation, family life, and physical and mental health. The global population's stress levels rose in response to these changes, leading to a widespread deterioration of mental health. One group particularly affected was parents of infants and very young children. Poor parental mental health may disrupt parent-infant bonding, with negative consequences for infant well-being and developme

Compulsive Hoarding Symptoms and the Role of Mindfulness Skills During Social Distancing for the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Exploratory Survey.

People reporting compulsive hoarding symptoms (CHS) have lower mindfulness skills than those without such symptoms. Mindfulness skills can have the role of a protective buffer against stressful periods. The quarantine imposed to contain the COVID-19 spread had a negative impact on daily habits and healthy behaviors (including social interactions). An increased attachment to objects might be one of the under-recognized psychological consequences of these difficult times, yet no study focused on CHS. Through an online survey in men who were on quarantine during the pandemic, this exploratory sur

Biopsychosocial Functions of Human Walking and Adherence to Behaviourally Demanding Belief Systems: A Narrative Review.

Human walking is a socially embedded and shaped biological adaptation: it frees our hands, makes our minds mobile, and is deeply health promoting. Yet, today, physical inactivity is an unsolved, major public health problem. However, globally, tens of millions of people annually undertake ancient, significant and enduring traditions of physiologically and psychologically arduous walks (pilgrimages) of days-to-weeks extent. Pilgrim walking is a significant human activity requiring weighty commitments of time, action and belief, as well as community support. Paradoxically, human walking is most s

COVID-19 and hypertension-evidence and practical management: Guidance from the HOPE Asia Network.

There are several risk factors for worse outcomes in patients with coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19). Patients with hypertension appear to have a poor prognosis, but there is no direct evidence that hypertension increases the risk of new infection or adverse outcomes independent of age and other risk factors. There is also concern about use of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors due to a key role of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors in the entry of the SARS-CoV-2 virus into cells. However, there is little evidence that use of RAS inhibitors increases the risk of SARS-CoV-2 viru

Unmet supportive care needs of haematological cancer survivors: rural versus urban residents.

Due to fewer cancer services in rural locations, rural survivors may have unique unmet needs compared to urban survivors. This study compared among rural and urban haematological cancer survivors the most common "high/very high" unmet supportive care needs and the unmet need scores for five domains (information, financial concerns, access and continuity of care, relationships and emotional health). Survivors' socio-demographics, rurality, cancer history and psychological factors associated with each unmet need domain were also explored. A total of 1511 haematological cancer survivors were recr

Amputation versus conservative treatment in severe open lower-limb fracture: A functional and quality-of-life study.

INTRODUCTION: Severe lower-limb trauma is a major event in a patient's life, and treatment is a challenge that has not been sufficiently studied. The main objective of the present study was to assess the difference in disability between amputees and patients who kept their leg after severe open lower-limb fracture. HYPOTHESIS: The study hypothesis was that amputation allows better functional recovery and quality of life, in the same time-frame. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All male and female patients aged over 18 years admitted to one of the trauma centers of Marseille (France) for major lower-li

Field-like interactions between motion-based reference frames.

A reference frame is required to specify how motion is perceived. For example, the motion of part of an object is usually perceived relative to the motion of the object itself. Johansson (Psychological Research, 38, 379-393, 1976) proposed that the perceptual system carries out a vector decomposition, which rewsults in common and relative motion percepts. Because vector decomposition is an ill-posed problem, several studies have introduced constraints by means of which the number of solutions can be substantially reduced. Here, we have adopted an alternative approach and studied how, rather th
