Longitudinal evaluation of neurocognitive outcomes in a cohort with persistent post-COVID olfactory dysfunction.

Persistent COVID-19-associated olfactory dysfunction (C19OD), along with other neurologic and cognitive deficits are common features of long COVID. This study aims to evaluate longitudinal trends in neurocognitive performance within a cohort with C19OD. In individuals with perceived C19OD we performed serial psychophysical olfactory and neurocognitive assessments at baseline and follow-up one year later. At baseline evaluation, individuals with C19OD were found to have diminished cognitive functioning compared to normosmic counterparts across several domains, including attention, executive fun

Predictive Foveal Processing in Active Vision.

Humans execute rapid saccadic eye movements to inspect objects of interest in high-acuity foveal vision. Even though each saccade entails a large-scale displacement of the retinal image, vision is continuous, and we easily keep track of the location and identity of relevant stimuli. Here, we highlight the contribution of predictive foveal processing to visual continuity. Specifically, we summarize evidence that foveal and even foveolar vision is nonuniform and modulated by attentional allocation. We then describe a set of psychophysical and neuroimaging studies demonstrating that defining feat

Time-to-Collision Estimation With Age-Related Macular Degeneration Using Visual and Auditory Cues: Which Cues are Most Important?

We measured time-to-collision (TTC) judgments from participants with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and normal vision (NV) controls, with an audiovisual virtual reality system that simulated vehicles approaching in a 3D traffic environment. The vehicle was presented visually only, aurally only, or both simultaneously, allowing us to determine the relative importance of visual and auditory cues with psychophysical reverse correlation. Results indicated that TTC judgments were based on both auditory and visual cues in the AMD and NV groups; the AMD group relied, at least in part, on the

Event cache: An independent component in working memory.

Working memory (WM) has been a major focus of cognitive science and neuroscience for the past 50 years. While most WM research has centered on the mechanisms of objects, there has been a lack of investigation into the cognitive and neural mechanisms of events, which are the building blocks of our experience. Using confirmatory factor analysis, psychophysical experiments, and resting-state and task functional magnetic resonance imaging methods, our study demonstrated that events have an independent storage space within WM, named as event cache, with distinct neural correlates compared to object

Post-COVID Telogen Effluvium.

Recently, the number of patients with acute telogen effluvium (ATE), among other forms of hair loss, has increased in comparison with previous years. The COVID-19 pandemic, taking place during this period, may be the cause of this phenomenon. The exact mechanisms by which this virus causes hair loss are not entirely understood; still, the most likely cause is an excessive release of proinflammatory cytokines during SARS-CoV-2 infection. This process can trigger the development of telogen effluvium (TE) by damaging hair matrix cells. Additionally, the psychosocial condition of patients recoveri

Self-motion illusions from distorted optic flow in multifocal glasses.

Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are ophthalmic lenses to correct presbyopia by providing improvements of near and far vision in different areas of the lens, but distorting the periphery of the wearer's field of view. Distortion-related difficulties reported by PAL wearers include unnatural self-motion perception. Visual self-motion perception is guided by optic flow, the pattern of retinal motion produced by self-motion. We tested the influence of PAL distortions on optic flow-based heading estimation using a model of heading perception and a virtual reality-based psychophysical experiment.

Hypothalamo-Pituitary axis and puberty.

Puberty is a complex process that culminates in the acquisition of psychophysical maturity and reproductive capacity. This elaborate and fascinating process marks the end of childhood. Behind it lies a complex, genetically mediated neuroendocrine mechanism through which the gonads are activated thanks to the fine balance between central inhibitory and stimulating neuromodulators and hormones with both central and peripheral action. The onset of puberty involves the reactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, supported by the initial "kiss" between kisspeptin and the hypothal

Distributed Representation of Curvilinear Self-Motion in the Macaque Parietal Cortex.

Information about translations and rotations of the body is critical for complex self-motion perception during spatial navigation. However, little is known about the nature and function of their convergence in the cortex. We measured neural activity in multiple areas in the macaque parietal cortex in response to three different types of body motion applied through a motion platform: translation, rotation, and combined stimuli, i.e., curvilinear motion. We found a continuous representation of motion types in each area. In contrast to single-modality cells preferring either translation-only or r

Multivoxel neurofeedback selectively modulates confidence without changing perceptual performance.

A central controversy in metacognition studies concerns whether subjective confidence directly reflects the reliability of perceptual or cognitive processes, as suggested by normative models based on the assumption that neural computations are generally optimal. This view enjoys popularity in the computational and animal literatures, but it has also been suggested that confidence may depend on a late-stage estimation dissociable from perceptual processes. Yet, at least in humans, experimental tools have lacked the power to resolve these issues convincingly. Here, we overcome this difficulty by

Glutamic acid decarboxylase levels in the cochlear nucleus of rats with acoustic trauma-induced chronic tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the perception of phantom sounds, a phenomenon believed to be due to abnormal neuronal activity in auditory regions of the CNS such as the brainstem cochlear nucleus (CN). One possible mechanism for the abnormal neuronal activity in the CN, supported by recent animal studies, is a decrease in GABAergic inhibition. One possible explanation for this is a decrease in the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of GABA, glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). In this study, we used immunohistochemistry to analyse the levels of GAD in the dorsal and ventral CN of rats that had been exposed to n

Role of fusiform and anterior temporal cortical areas in facial recognition.

Recent fMRI studies suggest that cortical face processing extends well beyond the fusiform face area (FFA), including unspecified portions of the anterior temporal lobe. However, the exact location of such anterior temporal region(s), and their role during active face recognition, remain unclear. Here we demonstrate that (in addition to FFA) a small bilateral site in the anterior tip of the collateral sulcus ('AT'; the anterior temporal face patch) is selectively activated during recognition of faces but not houses (a non-face object). In contrast to the psychophysical prediction that inverted

Visual search deficits are independent of magnocellular deficits in dyslexia.

The aim of this study was to investigate the theory that visual magnocellular deficits seen in groups with dyslexia are linked to reading via the mechanisms of visual attention. Visual attention was measured with a serial search task and magnocellular function with a coherent motion task. A large group of children with dyslexia (n = 70) had slower serial search times than a control group of typical readers. However, the effect size was small (η(p)(2)  = 0.05) indicating considerable overlap between the groups. When the dyslexia sample was split into those with or without a magnocellular defici

Developmental trajectory of number acuity reveals a severe impairment in developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia is a learning disability that affects the acquisition of knowledge about numbers and arithmetic. It is widely assumed that numeracy is rooted on the "number sense", a core ability to grasp numerical quantities that humans share with other animals and deploy spontaneously at birth. To probe the links between number sense and dyscalculia, we used a psychophysical test to measure the Weber fraction for the numerosity of sets of dots, hereafter called number acuity. We show that number acuity improves with age in typically developing children. In dyscalculics, numerical a

Effects of loss aversion on post-decision wagering: implications for measures of awareness.

Wagering contingent on a previous decision, or post-decision wagering, has recently been proposed to measure conscious awareness. Whilst intuitively appealing, it remains unclear whether economic context interacts with subjective confidence and how such interactions might impact on the measurement of awareness. Here we propose a signal detection model which predicts that advantageous wagers placed on the identity of preceding stimuli are affected by loss aversion, despite stimulus visibility remaining constant. This pattern of predicted results was evident in a psychophysical task where we ind

Glare and halo with refractive correction.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this investigation was to compare glare and halo with various methods of refractive correction. METHODS: Ninety-eight eyes of healthy pre-presbyopes were analysed for the presence of glare and halo using computer-generated stimuli. Subjects were divided into three groups: emmetropes without correction, single vision plastic lens spectacle wearers (with clean and dirty lenses) or single-vision soft contact lens wearers. RESULTS: No significant difference in glare was found among groups. Significant differences were noted in halos between emmetropes and both contact lens

Minimally invasive combined treatment for Parry-Romberg syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Facial hemiatrophy, a typical manifestation of Parry-Romberg syndrome, produces massive face asymmetry, causing marked aesthetic damage and severe psychological discomfort, with repercussions to the psychophysical status of the patient. This article presents a successful combined treatment that results in resolution of symptoms and patient satisfaction. METHODS: The authors proposed a clinic-therapeutic management comprising a customized program of bio-lipo-intense pulsed light (IPL) remodeling. RESULTS: In 2007, at a 1-year follow-up visit, the patient presented a stable result.

[The guidelines for the effective prevention of pressure ulcers].

The pressure ulcers belong to hard healing chronic wounds which can be the cause of heavy systemic complications delaying recovery to health and exposing patients to psychophysical suffering. They increase the demand for medical care and cause the growth of general costs of treatment and hospitalization. The most subjected to the development of bedsores are long-term immobilized and severely ill patients. Therefore, identification of high risk patients and the initiation of preventive workings are highly recommended. The aim of this work was to indicate the essential elements of prophylaxis of

Comparative study of the photopic spectral sensitivity of domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus), turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo gallopavo) and humans.

1. The photopic spectral sensitivity of domestic ducks and turkeys was determined using an operant psychophysical technique. Spectral sensitivity was determined over a range of specified wavelengths, including UVA, between 326 < lambda < 694 nm and the results were directly compared with human spectral sensitivity measured under similar experimental conditions. 2. Domestic ducks and turkeys had similar spectral sensitivities to each other, and could perceive UVA radiation, although turkeys were more sensitive to UVA than ducks. For both species, peak sensitivity was between 544 < lambda < 577

Attentional modulation of visual processing in adult dyslexia: a spatial-cuing deficit.

Anumber of researchers have suggested that deficient visual attention may play a causal role in dyslexia. However, traditional methods for investigating this assertion have been limited by the conflation of sensory and attentional factors and the inability to isolate large attentional effects. In this study, we sought to overcome these problems by combining spatial cuing with a visual search task measuring psychophysical thresholds. In normal readers, uncued search performance was characterized by a strong dependence on the number of elements in the stimulus array. Cuing the location of the ta

Brain function and conditioning in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is commonly treated by psychotherapy, which may draw upon behavioural psychology or cognitive-behavioural psychology, thereby making use of desensitisation techniques--amongst others; hypnotherapy may also be used. Hypnotherapy and psychotherapy are also available for helping patients who suffer from symptoms associated with general stress or who show phobic symptoms, such as a fear of heights or of walking across bridges. Studies of patients with such disorders have not always linked emotional (affective) and behavioural symptoms with psychophysical factor
