Epidemiologic clues to bioterrorism.

Public health investigators have successfully carried out epidemiologic investigations of outbreaks of disease for many years. By far the majority of these outbreaks have occurred naturally. With the recent illnesses resulting from deliberate dissemination of B. anthracis on an unsuspecting population, public health investigation of diseases must now include consideration of bioterrorism as a potential cause of outbreaks of disease. The features of naturally occurring outbreaks have a certain amount of predictability in terms of consistency with previous occurrences, or at least biological pla

Are we headed for a resurgence of the HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men?

HIV remains a critical health issue for men who have sex with men (MSM). In the United States, an estimated 365,000 to 535,000 MSM are living with HIV, and 42% of new HIV infections occur in this population. Recent data on sexually transmitted diseases and on sexual behavior indicate the potential for a resurgence in HIV infections among MSM. Outbreaks of gonorrhea and syphilis have been reported in a growing number of cities, and several studies have observed an increase in unprotected anal intercourse among MSM. These increases in HIV risk behavior may be attributed to several factors that h

Dental lessons learned from large-scale military dental records in the Israel defense forces: military dentistry as a window into national oral health trends.

Mandatory military service creates a unique opportunity to examine health patterns in a near-comprehensive national cohort of young adults. In this context, large-scale, routinely collected military health data, particularly from dental records, can serve as a powerful lens through which to explore broader public health phenomena. Recent population-based studies conducted within the Israel Defense Forces have demonstrated how clinical records originally intended to ensure operational readiness can also illuminate associations between health outcomes and social determinants. These findings high

Korean and Chinese citizens' pandemic fatigue and related factors amidst the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic: Implications for risk communication.

Pandemic fatigue has emerged as a significant public health challenge, particularly in countries that implemented prolonged COVID-19 public health and social measures (PHSM). Understanding the factors contributing to pandemic fatigue and its impact on adherence to health protective behaviors is essential for sustaining public engagement in long-term disease management. This study examines pandemic fatigue in China and South Korea, two countries that maintained prolonged COVID-19 public health and social measures, to identify key predictors and explore its relationship with health protective be

Structural Determinants of Health Literacy Among Formerly Incarcerated Individuals: Insights From the Survey of Racism and Public Health.

BACKGROUND: Formerly incarcerated individuals (FIIs) encounter difficulties with covering the cost of dental and medical care, adhering to medication regimens, and receiving fair treatment from health care providers. Yet, no published research has examined modifiable pathways to increase FIIs' health literacy (HL), which is essential for addressing the health needs of this vulnerable population. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to examine neighborhood characteristics (neighborhood deprivation, racial and economic polarization, and residential segregation) and public assistance program en

Osteoporotic fractures in older adults.

Osteoporotic fractures are emerging as a major public health problem in the aging population. Fractures result in increased morbidity, mortality and health expenditures. This article reviews current evidence for the management of common issues following osteoporotic fractures in older adults including: (1) thromboembolism prevention; (2) delirium prevention; (3) pain management; (4) rehabilitation; (5) assessing the cause of fracture; and (6) prevention of subsequent fractures. Areas for practice improvement and further research are highlighted.

Industry influence on mental health research: depression as a case example.

Emotional distress has been rising since before the COVID-19 pandemic and the public is told that depression is a major public health problem. For example, in 2017 depressive disorders were ranked as the third leading cause of "years lost to disability" and the World Health Organization now ranks depression as the single largest contributor to global disability. Although critical appraisals of the epidemiological data raise questions about the accuracy of population-based depression estimates, the dominance of the medical model and the marketing of psychotropics as "magic bullets," have contri

Mental and physical outcomes of yoga participation in women with spinal disorders: a qualitative study.

Yoga, a holistic practice supporting both physical and mental integrity, has gained increasing attention in recent years as a public health-promoting activity. Particularly among women with spinal disorders (e.g., hernia, lordosis, scoliosis, kyphosis), yoga is recognized not only for improving physical functionality but also for contributing significantly to psychosocial parameters such as stress management, self-awareness, and life satisfaction. In this context, the present study aimed to explore the mental and physical outcomes of regular yoga practice in women diagnosed with spinal disorde

Beyond epidemiology: Community, psychosocial and public health considerations in reducing asymptomatic Chlamydia trachomatis & Neisseria gonorrhoeae screening.

Growing debate has emerged regarding the reduction of routine asymptomatic screening for gonorrhoea and chlamydia among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM), particularly within HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) populations. Existing evidence suggests that high-frequency screening may offer limited population-level benefit while contributing to antimicrobial exposure and resistance. Consequently, several authors and policy bodies have argued for more selective and stewardship-oriented approaches. This commentary argues that current debates remain dominated by epidemiolog

Biobanking: Possibilities for Wastewater-Based Epidemiology.

The COVID-19 pandemic, spanning from early 2020 to late 2022, posed unprecedented challenges for global public health. However, it also spurred innovative approaches to pandemic management, notably the development of pathogen detection in wastewater. It was successfully demonstrated that wastewater analysis can not only reflect ongoing COVID-19 infections but also serve as an early indicator of disease prevalence within communities. Recognizing the value of longitudinal analyses of various pathogens, we identified the need for wastewater biobanking. This practice allows for the retrospective a

Exploring the Skills Prioritised in the Assessment of Students Pursuing Adult Nursing, Post-COVID: A Qualitative Analysis.

AIM: To explore comments made by registered nurse practice assessors during the clinical assessment of students pursuing adult nursing. BACKGROUND: Student nurses are entering a workforce that has changed professional and educational nursing practice systems due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited placement learning during lockdowns reduced opportunities for students to practise clinical skills in person. However, the current state of practice assessment for students pursuing adult nursing, particularly post-COVID, has yet to be explored. DESIGN: Qualitative content analysis. METHODS: Data we

The Landscape of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Newborn Screening in the United States in 2020: A Review of Screening Methodologies and Targets, Communication Pathways, and Long-Term Follow-Up Practices.

Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is T cell development disorders in the immune system and can be detected at birth. As of December 2018, all 53 newborn screening (NBS) programs within the United States and associated territories offer universal screening for SCID. The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), along with the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF), surveyed public health NBS system laboratory and follow-up coordinators regarding their NBS program's screening methodologies and targets, protocols for stakeholder notifications, and long-term follow-up practices. Integrating Permanent Dental Hygienists in Saudi Preschools and Primary Schools to Address the High Burden of Childhood Dental Caries.

BACKGROUND: Pain from dental caries is strongly linked to increased school absenteeism and poorer academic performance. This burden is pronounced in Saudi Arabia, where the prevalence of caries is double the global rate despite the availability of public dental services and various national oral health outreach programs, suggesting potential gaps in access to dental care. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEORY: While the public health benefits of school-based oral health programs are well-documented, existing school-based caries prevention programs in Saudi Arabia are limited, episodic, and lack continuity,
