Effects of ultraviolet radiation on 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 synthesis in red-eared slider turtles (Trachemys scripta elegans).

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are increased concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitaminn D(3) in red-eared slider turtles (Trachemys scripta elegans) after exposure to UV radiation. ANIMALS: 12 yearling turtles recently removed from aestivation. PROCEDURES: Turtles were randomly allocated to 2 groups (6 turtles/group). An initial blood sample was collected from all turtles for measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) concentrations. Turtles of 1 group were then provided no supplemental lighting, whereas turtles of the other group were exposed to full-spectrum coil bulbs at a distance of 22.86 c

[The remote effects of chronic exposure to ionizing radiation and electromagnetic fields with respect to hygienic standardization].

A variety and rate of non-cancer diseases occurred in humans as a result of chronic exposure to ionizing radiation or to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of high and superhigh frequency have been compared. The intensity of EMR was slightly higher than a sanitary standard for population. A risk of health impairments in workers having occupational exposure to EMR was assessed on the basis of Selie's concept of development of non-specific reaction of the body to chronic stress factors (general adaptation syndrome), models of changes in the body compensatory reserves and calculations of radiation r

Comparative study of H(2)O(2) and O3 effects on radiation treatment of TCE and PCE.

The effects of H(2)O(2) and O(3) on the decomposition of trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE) by gamma-rays (gamma-rays) were investigated in this work. The combined gamma-rays/O(3) process showed a synergistic effect and enhanced the removal of TCE and PCE compared with gamma-rays alone, but, the gamma-rays/H(2)O(2) process did not increase the removal. This interesting result was successfully identified by an electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy/spin-trapping method that can quantify hydroxyl radicals, which is directly related to the efficiency of TCE and PCE decompos

Side effects and quality of life after inadvertent radiation overdosage in brachytherapy of head-and-neck cancer.

PURPOSE: By comparing our old (DP5, in use from 1978 to 1994) and new (Plato, Nucletron) dose planning system, we found that the old system underestimated doses by 20-25%. To study the possible consequences for the patients treated between 1978 and 1994, all who were still alive were invited to undergo an examination with respect to side effects and quality of life (QOL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The degree of overdosage was calculated by comparing the isodose distribution generated on the two dose planning systems. Eighty-four patients were then invited to undergo an examination with respect t

Effects of solar-simulated radiation dose fractionation on CD1a+ Langerhans cells and CD11b+ macrophages in human skin.

BACKGROUND: There are few human studies investigating the immunosuppressive effects of exposure to solar-simulated radiation (SSR) and its relationship with sunburn/erythema, and few comparative data on the importance of SSR exposure regimens. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether SSR-induced erythema is a reliable end-point for assessing damage to antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in human skin. METHODS: We compared the relationship between SSR-induced erythema and alterations in epidermal CD1a+ Langerhans cells (LCs) and CD11b+ macrophages in human volunteers after single exposures to 0, 0.5, 1, 2

Added copper filtration in digital paediatric double-contrast colon examinations: effects on radiation dose and image quality.

Paediatric double-contrast barium enema examinations are usually performed at high tube voltage, 102-105 kV. The aim of this study was to investigate how much the effective dose to the child could be reduced by increasing the X-ray energy further by adding copper filter in the beam, and if this dose reduction could be achieved without endangering image quality. Organ doses to an anthropomorphic phantom simulating a 1-year-old child was measured using thermoluminescence dosimetry for assessment of the effective dose and this value was compared with the energy imparted which was obtained from ke

Effects of acute, low-dose UVB radiation on the induction of contact hypersensitivity to diphenylcyclopropenone in man.

Healthy volunteers (n = 14, age range 20-31 years, mean 23) were irradiated on the inside of the left forearm on four consecutive days with their individual minimal erythemal dose of ultraviolet B (UVB) prior to sensitization in the same skin area with a 2% solution of diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP). The reaction patterns were compared with 14 alopecia areata patients (age range 16-69 years, mean 40) starting topical immunotherapy with DPCP, sensitized without prior UVB treatment. Primary allergic reactions occurred in ten volunteers and in four alopecia areata patients. Patch testing on the up

Protective effects of chlorogenic acid, curcumin and beta-carotene against gamma-radiation-induced in vivo chromosomal damage.

The mouse bone marrow micronucleus test was carried out to evaluate the possible role of the dietary constituents chlorogenic acid (CGA), curcumin (CR) and beta-carotene (BC) in modulating the in vivo chromosomal damage induced by gamma-radiation. The results obtained suggest that oral administration of CGA (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w.), CR (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg b.w.) and BC (0.5 and 2.5 mg/kg b.w.) to mice can significantly reduce the frequencies of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (Mn PCEs) induced by whole body exposure to gamma-radiation (1.15 Gy; 0.05 Gy/s). With CGA and CR, this ef

Mortality among workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Evidence of radiation effects in follow-up through 1984.

White men hired at the Oak Ridge (Tenn) National Laboratory between 1943 and 1972 were followed up for vital status through 1984 (N = 8318, 1524 deaths). Relatively low mortality compared with that in US white men was observed for most causes of death, but leukemia mortality was elevated in the total cohort (63% higher, 28 deaths) and in workers who had at some time been monitored for internal radionuclide contamination (123% higher, 16 deaths). Median cumulative dose of external penetrating radiation was 1.4 mSv; 638 workers had cumulative doses above 50 mSv (5 rem). After accounting for age,

[Modifying effects of neurotropin on post-radiation disorders of neuromediator processes in the autonomic function regulation centers].

In experiments on Wistar rats, it was shown that 6 months after exposure to ionizing radiation (X-radiation 0.5 Gy and intraperitoneal 131I 6.5 mCu/kg) the hypothyroid state was accompanied by changes in inhibitory and excitatory mediation that are characteristic of chronic radiation stress in cerebral structures responsible for regulation of autonomic and animal functions and a relative deficiency of the hypothalamopituitary-adrenocortical axis. Application of therapeutic doses of neurotropin 3 months after radiation levelled the pattern of chronic radiation stress and diencephalic disorders

Definitive radiation therapy in the management of symptomatic patients with optic glioma. Survival and long-term effects.

We reviewed 24 children who had symptomatic gliomas that involved the optic chiasm and were treated with definitive radiation therapy from 1971 to 1986. In eight patients (33%), histologic confirmation of low-grade astrocytoma was obtained. Patients had radiation therapy only if there was evidence of visual deterioration or other clinical or radiographic evidence of disease progression. Radiation doses ranged from 4500 to 5660 cGy (median, 5400 cGy) with up to a 17-year follow-up period (median, 6 years). The 6-year actuarial freedom from disease progression and overall 6-year survival are 88%

Gamma-radiation-induced chromosomal aberrations in human lymphocytes: dose-rate effects in stimulated and non-stimulated cells.

Stimulated and non-stimulated human peripheral blood lymphocytes were irradiated acutely and chronically, over 24 h. Dose-effect relationships for dicentric chromosomes were established and various models were fitted to the data. At prolonged irradiations the yield decreased in basic agreement with the linear-quadratic model of abberration induction. Dose-protraction experiments of PHA+ and PHA- lymphocytes, irradiated under various conditions of oxygenation and suspension (culture medium, whole blood) showed that the rejoining time increased from about 3 h in non-stimulated cells to about 10

Evidence that DNA damage is a mediate in ultraviolet B radiation-induced inhibition of human gene expression: ultraviolet B radiation effects on intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expression.

Expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is a prerequisite for the capacity of cells to physically interact with leukocytes. Ultraviolet B radiation previously was found to inhibit interferon gamma-induced ICAM-1 expression in human keratinocytes by suppressing interferon gamma-mediated upregulation of ICAM-1 mRNA levels. Because ultraviolet B radiation induces photoproducts in cellular DNA, the potential role of ultraviolet B radiation-induced DNA damage in this system was assessed. For this purpose, cells from a normal donor were compared with cells from patients with xeroder

Radiation dose to dysphagia aspiration-related structures and its effect on swallowing: Comparison of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy plans.

CONTEXT: Radiotherapy techniques have improved over years but have also raised concerns over subsequent acute and late effects. One such complication, dysphagia, has led to much interest and optimization in treatment delivery. AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare radiation dose to dysphagia aspiration related structures (DARS) in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT), and assess its relation to post-treatment swallowing status, in patients of carcinoma of the anterior two thirds of tongue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment plan

Sex-dependent effects of genetic upregulation of activated protein C on delayed effects of acute radiation exposure in the mouse heart, small intestine, and skin.

Accidental exposure to ionizing radiation may lead to delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) in many organ systems. Activated protein C (APC) is a known mitigator of the acute radiation syndrome. To examine the role of APC in DEARE, we used a transgenic mouse model with 2- to 3-fold increased plasma levels of APC (high in APC, APCHi). Male and female APCHi mice and wild-type littermates were exposed to 9.5 Gy γ-rays with their hind-legs (bone marrow) shielded from radiation to allow long-term survival. At 3 and 6 months after irradiation, cardiac function was measured with ultraso

Effect of Personalized Approach to CT Scan Length on Radiation Dose in Parathyroid SPECT/CT.

Parathyroid SPECT/CT is the standard examination for localization of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue before surgery for hyperparathyroidism. The effective dose (ED) delivered by CT comprises approximately one third of the radiation dose in this examination. Parathyroid SPECT/CT typically includes 1 CT covering the mediastinum because of the risk of ectopic adenomas. This study investigates whether the use of personalized CT (pCT) on the basis of SPECT images can reduce scan length and CT-derived ED, while maintaining the ability to detect ectopic adenomas, compared with full field-of-view

Effect of Crystal Orientation on Dislocation Loop Evolution Under Electron Radiation in Pure Aluminum.

Aluminum, the primary structural material used in spacecraft, operates in low Earth orbit (LEO). It is subjected to high-energy electron irradiation with energies ranging from 0.1 to 10 MeV, which produces significant irradiation damage. Understanding the characteristics of irradiation defects with crystallographic orientations is crucial for analyzing the failure of spacecraft components and for developing aerospace materials with improved irradiation resistance. In this study, pure aluminum was irradiated in situ at room temperature using 200 kV transmission electron microscopy. The irradiat
