Regulation of the Atm promoter in vivo.

While ATM, the protein defective in the human genetic disorder ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T), is primarily activated as a preexisting protein by radiation, there is also evidence that expression of the protein can be regulated at the transcriptional level. Activation of the ATM promoter by ionizing radiation has been reported only in quiescent cells in culture. To investigate how the Atm promoter is regulated in vivo, we generated transgenic mice that express the luciferase reporter gene under the control of the murine Atm promoter. Using a biophotonic imaging system luciferase activity was moni

[Radiodermatitis in interventional radiology (hand dose measurement, screening and compensation)].

It is to be feared that the expansion of interventional radiology could lead to the reappearance of chronic radiodermatitis. Only a few studies mention the doses received by the hands, however these radiation doses are always high. Whereas clinical examinations lead to a belated diagnosis, capillary microscopy, a quick and non invasive test, enables to detect vascular injuries at the subclinical stage. Radiological protection is currently based on leaded gloves and on the reduction of exposure duration. Compensation for chronic radiodermatitis depends on the practitioner's status. In spite of

Genetic Upregulation of Activated Protein C Mitigates Delayed Effects of Acute Radiation Exposure in the Mouse Plasma.

Exposure to ionizing radiation, accidental or intentional, may lead to delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) that manifest as injury to organ systems, including the kidney, heart, and brain. This study examines the role of activated protein C (APC), a known mitigator of radiation-induced early toxicity, in long-term plasma metabolite and lipid panels that may be associated with DEARE in APCHi mice. The APCHi mouse model used in the study was developed in a C57BL/6N background, expressing the D168F/N173K mouse analog of the hyper-activatable human D167F/D172K protein C variant. Th

Effect of corticosteroid ointment on radiation induced dermatitis in head and neck cancer patients: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Almost all the patients receiving curative radiotherapy for head and neck cancer develop radiation dermatitis, which many a times leads to treatment interruption and reduce patient compliance. In this study, we evaluated the effect of potent topical steroid (Betamethasone Valerate 0.1%) cream on acute radiation dermatitis in head and neck cancer patients receiving curative radiotherapy. METHODS: A total 106 patients of head and neck cancers were randomly divided into arm A (52 patients) and arm B (54 patients). The patient in study arm A were treated with topical betamethasone 0.1

Real-time PCR analysis of micro-RNA expression in ionizing radiation-treated cells.

The cellular response to ionizing radiation exposure is very complex and involves many pathways. A wide variety of biologic effects are induced after exposure to ionizing radiation, ranging from DNA damage processing, signal transduction, mutations, altered gene expression, cell-cycle arrest, genomic instability, and induction of carcinogenesis to cell death. To gain insight into this complex response, global alterations in the expression of genes in irradiated cells have been examined. Recent studies have provided evidence to associate micro-RNA (miRNA) with many cellular processes, including

The age-dependent effect of high-dose X-ray radiation on NFκB signaling, structure, and mechanical behavior of the intervertebral disc.

Purpose: Ionizing radiation damages tissue and provokes inflammatory responses in multiple organ systems. We investigated the effects of high-dose X-ray radiation on the molecular inflammation and mechanical function of the intervertebral disc (IVD).Methods: Functional spine units (FSUs) containing the vertebrae-IVDs-vertebrae structure extracted from 1-month, 6-month, and 16-month-old NFκB-luciferase reporter mice and from 6-month-old myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88)-null mice. After a preconditioning period in culture, the FSUs were subjected a single dose of ionizing X-ray radiatio

CTM-DETR-frequency-aware and statistically guided transformer for early infrared forest fire detection.

Early-stage infrared forest fire detection is severely hindered by strong background thermal interference and extremely weak fire radiation signals. Existing methods mainly rely on spatial-domain modeling and overlook the frequency-domain characteristics of flame thermal radiation, limiting robustness in complex environments. To address this challenge, we propose CTM-DETR, an end-to-end detection framework tailored for infrared forest fire monitoring. A frequency-aware backbone, CGlobalFilter, is introduced to explicitly model thermal radiation priors by performing real-spectrum filtering in t

Validation of four-dimensional computed tomography without external reference respiratory signals for radiation treatment planning of lung tumors.

Deviceless four-dimensional (4D) computed tomography (CT) allows the acquisition of respiratory signals from six features without requiring an external device for cine CT processing. This method has been recently introduced in radiation treatment planning of lung tumors. To validate deviceless 4D CT, it must be compared with conventional 4D CT, which requires an external monitoring device. We compared the two methods using a multicell 4D phantom that simulates patient's movement during respiration regarding the target volume (TV), target position (TP), and internal TV for lung tumor radiation

An improved pseudotargeted GC-MS/MS-based metabolomics method and its application in radiation-induced hepatic injury in a rat model.

The liver is the pivotal metabolic organ primarily responsible for metabolic activities, detoxification and regulation of carbohydrate, protein, amino acid, and lipid metabolism. However, very little is known about the complicated pathophysiologic mechanisms of liver injury result from ionizing radiation exposure. Therefore, a pseudotargeted metabolomics approach based on gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with selected reaction monitoring (GC-MS-SRM) was developed to study metabolic alterations of liver tissues in radiation-induced hepatic injury. The pseudotargeted GC-MS-SRM method

Therapies for radiation injuries: research perspectives.

Exposure to radiation damages the immune, hematopoietic, and gastrointestinal components of the host defense system. This may lead to serious endogenous or exogenous infections. When radiation injury is combined with other physical trauma, e.g., burn or wound, the resulting damage to these systems is synergistic, and treatment for infection requires multiple approaches. This paper reviews successful single and combined therapeutic modalities for infections in irradiated mice and irradiated mice inflicted with trauma that are currently conducted at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institu

Retrospective biological dosimetry of absorbed radiation.

Frequencies of chromosomal translocations in human peripheral blood lymphocytes irradiated in vitro by 200 kV X rays have been estimated by the fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) technique. Probes specific for whole chromosomes 1, 3 and 4 were labelled with, biotin 16 dUTP + digoxigenin 11 dUTP; biotin 16 dUTP and digoxigenin 11 dUTP respectively, to achieve three colour FISH to distinguish exchanges involving individual chromosomes. The translocation frequencies for individual chromosomes suggested a relationship between the response and the genomic content of the chromosomes studied.

Mortality among workers at the Rocky Flats Plant, 1951-2017.

The Rocky Flats (RFs) Plant operated from 1951-1989 as part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear complex. Its primary mission was weapons component fabrication, whereby workers were potentially exposed to radioactive and non-radioactive hazards. RF worker mortality was compared to the general population, and dose-response relationships between mortality and radiation organ doses were examined. RF workers first employed between 1951 and 1979 for ⩾30 d were identified (n= 9397). Vital status was determined using national and state death records up to 2017. Organ doses from external pho

Sonographic determination of cutaneous and subcutaneous fibrosis after accidental exposure to ionising radiation in the course of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.

Chronic cutaneous lesions in eight of 15 survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear energy plant accident presenting with clinical features of cutaneous radiation fibrosis were examined 6 years after exposure using high-frequency ultrasound. In all patients, lesional skin was examined using both the B- and A-modes. Similar phenomena were found in all patients. The corium was increased in thickness as well as density compared to normal skin. The increase in density was seen not only in the medium strata but also particularly at the border between corium and subcutaneous tissue. Within the subcutaneous

Development of Virtual Reality Training for Improving Proficiency in Standard Patient Medical Treatment and Procedures in Radiation Emergency Medicine.

Conventional radiation emergency medical education has relied on mannequin-based simulations and table-top exercises, which have limitations in reproducing complex contaminated casualty scenarios. To address these limitations, a virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR)-based training simulator was developed and implemented in the 2024 regular training curriculum at the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (KIRAMS). This study focused on two VR modules: the treatment process for radiation exposure patients and VR TRIAGE. Both modules were technically refined in 2024, including

Risk of subsequent colorectal cancers after a solid tumor in childhood: Effects of radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Very few previous studies have addressed the question of colorectal cancer (CRC) after childhood cancer treatment. We aimed to quantify the roles of radiation therapy and chemotherapy agents in the occurrence of subsequent CRC. METHODS: A nested case-control study was conducted using 36 CRC cases and 140 controls selected from 7032 five-year survivors of the French Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (FCCSS) cohort, treated from 1945 to 2000 in France. The radiation dose-distribution metrics at the site of CRC and doses of individual chemotherapeutic agents were calculated. Conditiona
