An artificial intelligence mechanism for detecting cystic lesions on CBCT images using deep learning.

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed to provide and evaluate the efficiency of an artificial intelligence mechanism for detecting cystic lesions on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. METHOD AND MATERIALS: The CBCT image dataset consisted of 150 samples, including 50 cases without lesions, 50 dentigerous cysts (DC), and 50 periapical cysts (PC) based on both radiographic and histopathological diagnosis. The dataset was divided into a development set with 70 % of samples for training and validation and a final test set with the other 30 % of samples. Four images were obtained for each

A prospective epidemiological study for odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions of the maxilla and mandible in Queensland.

OBJECTIVES: Investigate the epidemiological profile for odontogenic and non-odontogenic intra-osseous lesions in the Queensland population (4.56 million) over 12 months. STUDY DESIGN: The following data were prospectively collected from all Queensland histopathology laboratories in 2011: gender, age at diagnosis, location of lesion, histopathological diagnosis of the lesion and the patient's postcode. RESULTS: Six-hundred and thirty-three lesions were collected, comprising 540 odontogenic cysts and 93 odontogenic tumors. Radicular cyst was the most frequently diagnosed lesion (247/540, 45.7%…

Choroid plexus cyst of the spinal cord presenting with signs of spinal cord compression in a 55-year-old male: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus cysts are benign, typically asymptomatic cystic lesions found almost exclusively in the brain's lateral ventricles, often noted during second-trimester fetal ultrasounds and usually resolving spontaneously before the 28th week of gestation. Spinal intramedullary choroid plexus cysts remain extremely rare, with only few cases documented in  the literature to date. This case describes a 55-year-old man with thoracic spinal cord compression due to a choroid plexus cyst, highlighting a rare differential diagnosis for adult spinal cord lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-ye

Prevalence, Characteristics and Distribution of Odontogenic Cysts amongst the Indian Subpopulation of Southern Rajasthan: A 5-year Retrospective Study of 218 Cysts.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts (OCs) arise from the odontogenic epithelium and occur in the tooth-bearing regions of the jaws. Proliferation … d. The majority of the patients (85%) reported with a complaint of pain (with or without swelling). Radicular cyst was the most prevalent type (49.55%). The most common site involved was the anterior maxilla (41.75%). Dental complications such as displacement, mobility, discoloration and root resorption were diagnosed in 91 cysts (41.75%). Bony complications suc …

Dentigerous cysts of inflammatory origin. A clinicopathologic study.

The exact histogenesis of dentigerous cysts remains unknown, but most authors favor a developmental origin from the tooth follicle. The aim … elium that in some cases was markedly hyperplastic and exhibited anastomosing rete ridges mimicking radicular cysts. In the majority of cases, parts of the cysts were lined with a 2 to 3 cell layer thick cuboidal epithelium that we believe was derived from reduced enamel epithelium. Rests of odontogenic epithelium frequently were evident in the cyst walls. We su …

Perilesional and Contextual Radiomic Features Improve Differentiation of Odontogenic Cysts on Panoramic Radiographs.

Background: Radiographic differentiation of odontogenic cysts remains challenging due to overlapping imaging features and limited specificit … atients with histopathologically confirmed odontogenic cysts (odontogenic keratocyst [OKC], n = 33; radicular cyst [RC], n = 12; dentigerous cyst [DC], n = 10; odontogenic cyst, not otherwise specified [OC-NOS], n = 8). Panoramic radiographs were manually segmented to define cyst and anatomical regions of interest. Radiomic features were extracted using three gr …

Can cyst volume be used to stratify risk of complications following cyst defect reconstruction with iliac crest graft?

INTRODUCTION: The role of the volume of radicular and dentigerous cysts on clinical symptoms is unclear and potentially may predict development of pre- and postoperative complications, especially after cystectomies with large bony defects. Therefore the aim of this study was to assess pre- and postoperative symptoms associated to the volume of jaw cysts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 111 patients with follicular or dentigerous cysts from 2008-2012. Anterior iliac crest grafts were used to fill defects after cystectomy. χ2-test was performed to analyze associations betwee

Distribution of type 1 and 2 blood group chains in normal and pathological odontogenic epithelium defined by monoclonal antibodies specific for Lea and H type 2.

This study describes the distribution of type 1 and type 2 blood group carbohydrate chains in human normal and pathological odontogenic epithelia and in epithelia of human oral mucosa. Odontogenic epithelium was examined from 12 fetal tooth germs, 25 ameloblastomas, 13 odontogenic keratocysts, 13 follicular cysts and 13 radicular cysts. Oral mucosal epithelia was studied from 12 fetuses and 10 adults. Cell surface carbohydrates were detected using antibodies with reactivity for the blood group antigens A, B, type 1 chain Lea and type 2 chain H by an immunofluorescence technique. The expression…

The Potential Immunomodulatory Roles of Semaphorin 4D in Human Periapical Lesions.

In addition, the colocalization of SEMA4D with CD4, CD8, and CD20 was detected. RESULTS: Radicular cysts (RCs) (n = 18) and periapical granulomas (PGs) (n = 13) were identified by histologic evaluation. The number of SEMA4D+ cells in PGs was significantly greater than that in RCs (P < .05). T-cell and B-cell infiltration did not differ significantly b …

Accuracy of mean grey density values obtained with small field of view cone beam computed tomography in differentiation between periapical cystic and solid lesions.

AIM: To determine if small and medium field of view (FOV) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) adjusted grey density values can be used to distinguish between periapical cystic and solid lesions. METHODOLOGY: Fifty-seven patients with periapical lesions having retrievable small or medium FOV CBCT images and biopsy samples were included. Two oral and maxillofacial pathologists examined the biopsy samples to provide the gold standard diagnosis of cystic or solid lesion. From the CBCT images, two independent examiners recorded the minimum adjusted grey density value of each lesion twice. Intra-e

The treatment of mandibular cysts associated with osteogenesis imperfecta.

A fifteen-year-old boy with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and dentinogenesis imperfecta also had a big cyst in the mandible and needed surgical therapy. Six months postoperatively we saw a complete regeneration of the bone-structures. We came to the conclusion that cysts which appear independently from the disease of OI can heal after surgical intervention.
