We have shown that steroid manipulations may influence the rate of flux of water across the blood-brain barrier. Such changes are regionally variable and are best seen in the cerebral cortex. Administration of dexamethasone produced decreased water permeability while withdrawal of dexamethasone and ethinyloestradiol resulted in increased permeability. Increased water content in cerebral cortex was demonstrated after steroid withdrawal and ethinyloestradiol administration. The effect of thyrotoxicosis on the capacity of fragmented sarcoplasmic reticulum (FSR) and crude homogenate (CH) to sequester Ca2+ was determined in rat muscle for the slow-twitch type I soleus (SOL), the fast-twitch type IIA deep region of the vastus lateralis (DVL),and the fast-twitch type IIB superficial region of the vastus lateralis (SVL). The hyperuricemic effect of cholinergic agents was studied in rats given potassium oxonate which inhibits urate oxidase and in functionally hepatectomized rats. Acetylcholine slightly increased plasma uric acid in the oxonate-treated animals, and the effect was markedly enhanced by pretreatment with physostigmine. Naloxone injected into the lateral septum caused intense electrocortical seizures which did not occur following callosal or periaqueductal gray (PAG) injections. Conversely, injections into periaqueductal gray caused a characteristic and pronounced backward circling with only moderate electrocortical changes. Intracerebral injection of naloxone had effects, including epileptogenesis, which appeared to be site-specific. These effects are in some ways similar to the effects of enkephalin and morphine.

Gastric mucosal lesions were induced in rats by pyloric ligature and intragastric instillation of hydrochloric acid. Within 4 h all rats developed focal mucosal lesions. Early regeneration was observed 72 h after release of the pyloric ligature and replacement of the hydrochloric acid by a phosphate buffer. The parameters of the acid-base-state of the arterial blood were measured in spontaneously hypertensive rats of the Okamoto-strain (SHR) and in normotensive Wistar rats (NWR) of a random-bred strain.
