The pudendo-pudendal reflex in male and female rats.

The pudendo-pudendal reflex (bulbocavernosus reflex) was studied in male and female rats. Electrical stimulation of pudendal nerve afferents induced reflex volleys in ipsi- and contralateral pudendal nerves. The early components of the reflex were unaffected by acute spinal transection. The reflex was shown to be polysynaptic and bilaterally organized. No qualitative differences were noted between males and females, but a significantly longer central delay was observed in female rats, compared to males.

The effects of anticholinergics on the photopalpebral reflex, memory and mood.

This study investigated central anticholinergic drug effects on: (1) the Randt Memory Test, a relatively new instrument which measures the acquisition and recall of verbal and pictorial information; (2) the averaged photopalpebral reflex (PPR), an electrophysiological parameter, the validity of which needs to be further investigated in pharmacological research and; (3) mood as measured by a 16-item visual analogue scale. Atropine (1 mg and 2 mg), pirenzepine (20 mg) and a placebo were administered intramuscularly in a double-blind cross-over trial in eight healthy volunteers. There were no int…

The effect of verapamil, diltiazem and nifedipine on baroreceptor reflexes.

Heart rate in nifedipine treated patients tends to be higher than in those treated with verapamil or diltiazem. This may be due, among other causes, to a differential action on cardiac baroreflexes. As conclusions of previous studies were controversial, we decided to study the effect of verapamil, diltiazem and nifedipine on baroreflex sensitivity. After 3-5 week treatment, heart rate response to various doses of i.v. phenylephrine and sodium nitroprusside was recorded in conscious rats. The slope of the regression line relating change of heart rate to change in blood pressure, was depressed i…

Sodium balance and the reflex regulation of baroreceptor function.

The study of the mechanisms by which variations in salt intake affect cardiovascular function has progressed from characterizing hemodynamic and renal effects to investigating the role of sodium (Na+) on sympathetic neuronal function. The consequences of altered sodium balance on the regulation of vasomotor activity and the integration of baroreceptor reflexes is a relatively neglected area of research. This report summarizes the significance of the disturbance in baroreceptor function that is associated with alterations in Na+ homeostasis and assesses the possible mechanisms in a study of the…

[Influence of hemisphere lesions on the contralateral blink reflex].

Electrically elicited blink reflexes were investigated in 28 patients with unilateral hemispheral lesion. The reflex evoked by electrical stimulation of the supraorbital nerve contralateral to the side of the hemispheral lesion was absent or depressed in 14 out of 28 cases. The abnormal patterns of the blink reflexes were devided into four different types (Type AB, Type AD, Type EB, and Type AB-EB). The Type AB, recorded in 4 cases, consisted of bilateral absence of late component (R2) when the supraorbital nerve on the non-lesion side was stimulated. In contrast, the reflex responses were alm…

[Long loop reflexes--a clinically relevant method].

Late reflex potentials have been know for a long time. On the upper limb it has been proven that these potentials have a transcortical pathway. The electrical stimulation of nerve trunks is easily applicable in clinical practice and produces clear long-loop responses. The typical results can be reproduced for extrapyramidal, cerebellar and pyramidal lesions by this method. The long-loop reflex is sensitive to lesions in the course of the pyramidal tract.

Pain reflexes in the clinical assessment of migraine syndromes.

Nociceptive flexion reflexes, RIII reflex in particular, have been demonstrated to be a useful tool for pain research in humans, since the threshold of RIII reflex is that of pain. In this study a reduction of RIII reflex threshold, strictly related to the severity of the disease, is described in migraine with interval headache (MIH), that is considered a severe and evolutive form of common migraine (CM). These abnormalities were not found in CM or in other chronic pain conditions, i.e. chronic tensive headache (CTH), suggesting that this electrophysiological parameter may be useful in the cli…

A personal overview of causalgia and other reflex dystrophies.

This is a personal assessment of true major causalgia and the other reflex dystrophies, related but distinctly separate entities. The clinical picture of causalgia differs only in minor respects from that described by Mitchell over 120 years ago. Its management has, however, been clarified, largely through the extensive experiences of World War II. It is readily recognized and can be treated effectively by sympathetic blocks or sympathectomy together with active exercise. The other reflex dystrophies are far less understood. They appear to have a similar pattern in their early phase and to res…

Vago-vagal reflexes to the colon of the anaesthetized ferret.

Electrical stimulation of the central end of the vagal communicating branch in the thorax at frequencies between 2 and 20 Hz elicited, after … n. These results are consistent with the vagus containing two motor pathways to the colon which are reflexly stimulated by a vagal afferent input. The functional significance of these reflexes is discussed.

Opioid antagonists and spinal reflexes in the anaesthetized cat.

In barbiturate-anaesthetized cats, intravenous naloxone (0.025-0.10 mg/kg) increased the amplitude of monosynaptic reflexes produced by electrical stimulation of the nerves to the biceps-semitendinosus and gastrocnemius muscles and the complex reflexes to electrical stimulation of myelinated afferents of the sural and tibial nerves and reflexes to electrical stimulation of unmyelinated primary afferents of the tibial nerve. Increases in reflexes were also produced by the (-)- but not the (+)-isomer of the opiate antagonist N- furylmethylnormetazocine (both isomers being given in the dose range…

The cutaneo-anal reflex: a useful index of neuropathy?

Recent studies have suggested that the latency of the cutaneo-anal reflex is prolonged in idiopathic faecal incontinence, suggesting neuropathic damage to the external anal sphincter. Electrical responses were recorded from the external anal sphincter following stimulation of the ipsilateral and contralateral perianal skin in normal subjects and patients with idiopathic faecal incontinence. Ipsilateral stimulation gave rise to shorter latencies of the earliest responses to stimulation compared with contralateral stimulation (P less than 0.001). When care was taken to compare results obtained b…

Chemical specificity of a laryngeal apneic reflex in puppies.

In neonatal mammals the introduction of water and some other fluids into the larynx causes prolonged reflex apnea by stimulation of afferents in the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN). We have studied the chemical specificity of this reflex in 1- to 9-day-old anesthetized puppies. The laryngeal lumen was perfused with a variety of substances while ventilation through a tracheal cannula was recorded. Water consistently elicited apnea, which was terminated by 150 mM NaCl. Sucrose and urea solutions (100-500 mM) also elicited apnea, suggesting that osmolarity is not a critical factor. Phosphate buffe…

The effects of alcohol on the acoustic Reflex Relaxation Index.

Normal-hearing young adults (6 M, 5 F) ingested 1.5 ml alcohol per Kg body weight over 90 min (blood alcohol level then being 0.104 +/- 0.016%), then tested for contralateral acoustic reflex (AR) threshold using an otoadmittance meter, and given the acoustic Reflex Relaxation Index (RRI) test of Norris, Stelmachowicz and Taylor. Each stimulus for the RRI was a 4-sec train of pulses at a level 10 db above AR threshold at .5, 1, or 2 kc/s, with equivalent on-time of 166.7 msec and off-time of 200 msec. AR responses were displayed on an X-Y recorder. RRI was taken as the percentage of total relat…

Function of the acoustic reflex in discrimination of intense speech.

It is known that the middle ear acoustic reflex (AR) alters the transmission characteristics of the auditory system; however, disagreement exists on how these changes may influence the ears; transfer of speech stimuli. In this study, speech with and without a competing message was delivered at supra-AR levels to cat ears that demonstrated an active and a pharmaceutically inactivated middle ear reflex mechanism. Resulting cochlear potentials were tape recorded and subsequently presented to 18 human subjects with normal hearing. Findings suggest word and sentence discrimination is enhanced in th…
