Comparison of Fracture Resistance of 3D Printed and Milled Zirconia Veneers and Anterior Crowns.

OBJECTIVES: It has recently become possible to prepare monolithic zirconia restorations through 3D printing, in addition to the typical milling technique. In this study, the fracture resistance of anterior crowns and veneers prepared by both techniques was compared. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Digital files were created for the crown and veneer, and restorations were created by milling (BruxZir Esthetic zirconia) and stereolithography 3D printing (LithaCon 3Y 210). The restorations were cemented to resin abutments and subjected to 50,000 thermal cycles before fracture resistance testing, measuring

Influence of intervening media and thickness on transmitted irradiance from a dental light-curing unit.

BACKGROUND: Light-activated and dual-cure resin systems require sufficient transmitted irradiance for adequate polymerization. During cementation, saliva, blood, or oxygen-inhibiting agents may be interposed between the curing light and the restorative material. This in vitro study evaluated the influence of intervening media type and thickness on transmitted irradiance from a dental light-curing unit. METHODS: Four intervening media were evaluated: artificial saliva, deionized water, an oxygen-inhibiting agent (Oxyguard II), and porcine whole blood, at thicknesses of 1, 3, and 6 mm. Cylindri

Connective tissue grafting on resin ionomer in localized gingival recession.

BACKGROUND: One of the main objectives of periodontal reconstructive surgery is the coverage of exposed roots that occur due to gingival recession. On some occasions, where a caries, root resorption, or amalgam restoration exists on the exposed root surface, the treatment planning becomes more complex. This case report describes the use of a subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) on a resin ionomer-restored root surface to treat gingival recession that is complicated with the above-mentioned handicaps. METHODS: An amalgam restoration and carious lesion were removed following full-thickn

[Adhesion of sealer cements to dentin with and without smear layer].

The influence of a smear layer on the adhesion of sealer cements to dentin was assessed in recently extracted human anterior teeth. A total of 120 samples was tested, 40 per sealer; 20 each with and without the smear layer. The teeth were split longitudinally, and the internal surfaces were ground flat. One-half of each tooth was left with the smear layer intact, while the other half had the smear removed by washing for 3 min with 17% EDTA followed by 5.25% NaOCI. Evidence of the ability to remove the smear layer was verified by scanning electron microscopy. Using a specially designed jig, the
