Comparison of three acute stress models for simulating the pathophysiology of stress-related mucosal disease.

Stress-related mucosal disease (SRMD) is highly prevalent in intensive care patients leading to increasing treatment cost and mortality. SRMD is a disease elusive of ideal treatment. Evaluation of drugs is very pertinent for the efficient and safe treatment of SRMD. It relies mainly on in vivo screening models. There are various stress models, and till date, none of them is validated for simulating the SRMD pathophysiology. The present study aims to choose the best model, which reproduce pathophysiology of SRMD, among previously established stress models. This study evaluates ulcer index, hexo

Conservative management of partial extensor tendon lacerations greater than half the width of the tendon in manual workers.

Conservative management (without suturing or splints) of partial extensor tendon lacerations greater than half the width of the tendon has not been previously investigated. In this prospective study, a total of 45 injured tendons (with lacerations involving 55%-90% of the width of the tendon) in 39 patients were treated conservatively. Injury zones I, III, and V of the fingers; and zones I and III of the thumb were excluded. Immediate non-resistive active mobilization was initiated and continued for 4 weeks, followed by resistive exercises. Patients were allowed to go back to work after 6 week

Stress-induced redistribution of immune cells--from barracks to boulevards to battlefields: a tale of three hormones--Curt Richter Award winner.

BACKGROUND: The surveillance and effector functions of the immune system are critically dependent on the appropriate distribution of immune cells in the body. An acute or short-term stress response induces a rapid and significant redistribution of immune cells among different body compartments. Stress-induced leukocyte redistribution may be a fundamental survival response that directs leukocyte subpopulations to specific target organs during stress, and significantly enhances the speed, efficacy and regulation of an immune response. Immune responses are generally enhanced in compartments (e.g.

Outcomes of a clinic-based pediatric constraint-induced movement therapy program.

A single-group pre- and post-test design was used to evaluate functional outcomes of a constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) protocol implemented in an outpatient therapy center. The participants were 29 children with hemiplegia, ages 1.6-19.1 years old. The less-involved upper limb was placed in a cast that was worn 24 hr a day, 7 days a week. Individual therapy sessions took place 5 days/week. Children received 3 or 6 hr therapy sessions for 16-19 days followed by 2-5 days in which bimanual tasks were performed. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and following CIMT. Statistically signif

Atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation after surgical relocation of Sprengel deformity: a case report.

We report a case of atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation developed after scapular relocation for Sprengel deformity in a 5-year-old girl. Scapular relocation descended the scapula by 60%, and achieved a normal shoulder joint motion. However, atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation developed, probably by pulling force of the tightened anterior fibers of upper trapezius muscle. Atlantoaxial joint was reduced easily under general anesthesia and muscle relaxant, along with surgical release of the tight band at the anterior part of trapezius muscle, which was maintained by halovest immobilization.

The CRH-R₁ receptor mediates luteinizing hormone, prolactin, corticosterone and progesterone secretion induced by restraint stress in estrogen-primed rats.

Acute stress has been shown to modify hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis activity. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), the principal regulator of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, has been implicated as a mediator of stress-induced effects on the reproductive axis. The role of the specific CRH receptor subtypes in this response is not completely understood. In the current study, we investigated the role of the CRH-R(1) receptor on luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), progesterone (P) and corticosterone (CT) secretion in stress-in

Mechanisms responsible for progesterone's protection against lordosis-inhibiting effects of restraint II. Role of progesterone metabolites.

When ovariectomized Fischer female rats are hormonally primed with 10 μg estradiol benzoate, a 5 min restraint experience rapidly inhibits lordosis behavior. Addition of progesterone to the hormonal priming prevents this restraint-induced inhibition. In prior work, we reported evidence that progesterone receptors (PR) may contribute to this protective effect of progesterone. In the current manuscript, we provide evidence that progesterone metabolites may also contribute to progesterone's ability to reduce the effects of restraint. Ovariectomized female rats were hormonally primed with 10 μg es

Precautions taken to avoid abandoning the act of hanging and reducing pain in suicidal hanging cases.

This study presents 17 cases of hanging with some preventative measures, when compared with usual hanging fatalities, between 2002 and 2006 in the province of Konya, Turkey. We observed in 4 cases that the victim had only tied together their hands, whereas in 1 case both the hands (with a clothesline) and mouth (with a plastic bag) had been fastened. In a further case, the oral orifice had been closed using a scarf and in the remaining 11 cases, soft materials such as a scarf, hood, the collar of a coat or shirt had been used as padding against the ligature loop. At first glance, the cases whe

Use of acepromazine for stress control in Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) captured by drive-net.

Capture and restraint can induce stress in wild animals and tranquilizers may be beneficial in preventing some of the more adverse effects. A short-acting neuroleptic agent (acepromazine) was assessed in 25 Spanish ibexes (Capra pyrenaica) captured by drive-net. The animals were divided into a control group (14 ibexes) and a treated group (11 ibexes). Heart rate and rectal temperature, as well as haematological and biochemical parameters, were used to evaluate the effects of tranquilization during 3 h of restraint. A reduction in rectal temperature, red blood cell count, packed cell volume, ha

Effects of atypical kappa-opioid receptor agonists on intrathecal morphine-induced itch and analgesia in primates.

Itch/pruritus is the most common side effect associated with spinal administration of morphine given to humans for analgesia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of kappa-opioid receptor (KOR) agonists with diverse chemical structures as antipruritics and to elucidate the receptor mechanism underlying the antipruritic effect in monkeys. In particular, previously proposed non-KOR-1 agonists, including nalfurafine [TRK-820, 17-cyclopropylmethyl-3,14 beta-dihydroxy-4,5 alpha-epoxy-6 beta-[N-methyl-trans-3-(3-furyl)acrylamido]morphinan], bremazocine [(+/-)-6-ethyl-1,2,3,4,5,

Teenagers with Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) poisoning.

We report 2 cases of teenagers who were poisoned with Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) and presented to the emergency department with a severe acute anticholinergic toxidrome after ingestion of several hundred seeds. The patients presented with visual hallucinations, disorientation, incomprehensible and nonsensical speech, and dilated sluggish pupils. Both patients required restraints for combativeness until adequate sedation with lorazepam and haloperidol was achieved. Jimson weed is found in southern Canada and the United States and can cause acute anticholinergic poisoning and death in human

Reenactment of circumstances in deaths related to restraint.

Reenactment of the circumstances in deaths associated with restraint, utilizing participants and witnesses while memories are fresh, may help death investigators more accurately determine the cause of death. Two recent deaths in Ventura County that occurred during restraint are discussed. Within a day of the autopsies the restrainers agreed to participate in reenactments of the restraint process, utilizing live volunteers as subjects. They allowed videotaping. Deaths associated with restraint often have nonspecific autopsy findings. Timely reenactment of the circumstances of deaths associated

Effect of stress induced by electrical stimulation of the hypothalamus on the electrical stability of the heart in rabbits.

The influence of stress on cardiac electrical stability (CES) and chaotic dynamics of the electrical activity of the heart was studied in acute and chronic experiments in rabbits. Stress was caused by 2-3 h daily immobilization of the animals with electrical stimulation of emotiogenic centers of the hypothalamus through implanted electrodes. CES was estimated by the thresholds for ventricular arrhythmia: paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia, repeated ventricular extrasystoles and ventricular fibrillation (VF). The results showed: (i) CES in stressed rabbits was decreased significantly compared w

Effects of stress and etifoxine on pentobarbital-induced loss of righting reflex in Balb/cByJ and C57BL/6J mice.

We hypothesized that functional changes in the GABAergic system induced by stress would differ between two inbred mouse strains BALB/cByJ and C57BL/6J. We compared the effects of restraint stress and of the anxiolytic drug etifoxine (EFX) on the duration of pentobarbital-induced loss of righting reflex (hypnotic effect) in the two strains. Naive BALB/cByJ mice were less sensitive than naive C57BL/6J mice to the hypnotic effect of pentobarbital. C57BL/6J mice exhibited a shortening in the duration of pentobarbital-induced hypnosis following stress whereas stress had no effect in BALB/cByJ mice.

Hematology and serum chemistry of the island spotted skunk on Santa Cruz Island.

We determined serum biochemistry and hematologic values for island spotted skunks (Spilogale gracilis amphiala) on Santa Cruz Island (California, USA). Samples were collected from island spotted skunks chemically restrained with ketamine hydrochloride and acepromazine in August 1999 (dry season) and from skunks manually restrained in August 2000 (dry season) and January 2001 (wet season). One parameter, glucose, significantly differed with season, with higher levels during the wet season. Serum chemistry and hematologic profiles suggest that method of restraint (manual or chemical), as well as
