Hyperlipoproteinaemia resulting from thyroid suppression and long-term ingestion of a high cholesterol diet caused prolonged lipaemia retinalis in 6 rhesus monkeys. No atherosclerotic deposits or other ophthalmoscopically visible changes of the retinal vasculature were detectable. 1. Na salicylate 31 mM inhibits anaerobic glycolysis from glucose in bovine retina extracts. The formation rate of DAP and GAP increases while that of FDP, G6P, F6P and lactate decreases. The effects of moderate-intensity light (150 to 200 ft-cd) on retinal structure were compared between retinol-adequate and retinol-deficient rats after 1 to 6 days of light exposure during the 12 hr light phase of the cycle. Seven patients with gyrate atrophy and deficiency of ornithine-delta-aminotransferase were studied for in vivo pyridoxine responsiveness; three responded to oral vitamin B6 with over 50% reduction of serum ornithine levels and return to normal of serum lysine levels. Multiple early untreated lesions of angiomatosis retinae in the peripheral retina and optic disk were discovered after death in both eyes of a patient with von Hippel-Lindau disease. Each of the four peripheral angiomas was studied by a different technique: routine light microscopy of serial histologic sections, electron microscopy, flat mount and trypsin digestion, and frozen section with special stains for lipid. Gross examination of an eye removed at autopsy from a 4-year-old child with congenital heart disease revealed typical grouped pigmentation of the retina. Routine light microscopy and flat preparation of the retinal pigment epithelium demonstrated the lesions to consist of focal areas of increased concentration of pigment granules in otherwise normal retinal pigment epithelial cells.
