INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is characterized by the presence of an inflammatory fibrotic process in the retroperitoneum causing compression of the retroperitoneal structures including the ureters. The ureterolysis is the liberation of the incarcerated portion of the ureter, from its proximal healthy portion to the distal portion, generally free of fibrosis, below the iliac vessels. Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) associated with chronic use of ergotamine is a very rare disorder. We report a 45-year-old woman who presented with a RPf after using, almost daily for 23 years, ergotamine tartrate for migraine relief. FRP presented as a chronic inflammatory state, anemia, abdominal and lumbosacral pain and a hypogastric mass. A CT-Scan showed a periaortic mass and left hydronephrosis. The authors report a case of retroperitoneal fibrosis conservatively treated with Tamoxifen. The computerized tomography (TC) control at ten months showed the persistence of a slight residual of peri-aortic fibrotic tissue. This result allowed removal of the double J catheter.

OBJECTIVES: The present study describes two patients with retroperitoneal fibrosis following prolonged use of bromocriptine and pergolide for Parkinson's disease. Both patients also presented severe atheromatosis.
METHODS: Similar cases reported in the literature are reviewed and the possible relationship between the use of the ergotamine derivate and severe atheromatosis is discussed.

I have described a 17-year-old adolescent in whom retroperitoneal fibrosis was the initial manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus.
