The authors report on combination chemotherapy in 22 patients (seven men, 15 women; age 20-67, median 38.5 years) with incompletely resected invasive thymoma. Twelve of 22 patients have had prior radiotherapy of the tumor (four of 12 local failure, eight of 12 remote metastases). By subsequent chemotherapy five of 12 obtained complete remission (CR). One of them died by relapsed tumor, another by an intercurrent infection. At 5 years after diagnosis the survival rate of the 12/22 patients was 33% (Kaplan-Meier). In this retrospective study the case reports of 165 patients suffering from an abducens nerve palsy as the main presenting symptom were evaluated. The sixth nerve palsy was more frequent on the left (52%) than on the right hand side (38%), in 10% there was bilateral involvement. In 49 cases a vascular origin was suspected (29.7%), with diabetes mellitus as the most important risk factor (n = 35). The clinical, biochemical and immunological features of 180 patients with hyperthyroid Graves' disease managed at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Endocrine Clinic from 1983 to 1987 were examined. The prevalence of the disease is highest in Chinese and lowest in Indians. The female: male ratio is 2.8:1. Postoperative biliary stasis is a common state before the onset of postoperative acute cholecystitis. We studied 347 patients with primary colorectal carcinoma treated by surgery during 1973-1983: 64 (18.2%) with right colon carcinoma, 158 (45.7%) with left colon carcinoma, 14 (4.2%) with transverse colon carcinoma, and 110 (31.9%) with rectal carcinoma. We compared the right-sided carcinoma (RSC) and left-sided carcinoma (LSC) groups. Obstruction was found in 17.2% of RSC compared with 20.3% LSC patients (P greater than 0.05). We report a retrospective study of two years experience with I-131-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG). I-131 MIBG was prepared locally and was found to have decreased background activity as compared with other available commercial preparations from Great Britain and the United States. We studied 40 patients with a total of 44 retinal arterial macroaneurysms. All patients were followed up for at least six months. Macroaneurysms (MAs) have variable clinical presentations and are still frequently misdiagnosed before fluorescein angiography. From 1960 to 1984, 78 new patients with progressive systemic sclerosis were followed up: 60 women and 18 men whose ages ranged from 20 to 83 years, with a mean age of 58 years. Twenty nine are known to be dead and 3 were lost of follow-up. Forty six have been followed up to the present time for a mean period of 5 years. Nineteen selected patients with severe, mostly systemic onset, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis were treated with methotrexate (MTX) for an average of 10.5 months. Twelve patients showed statistically significant improvement, as measured by the number of affected, swollen, tender, and functionally impaired joints, and by decreases in erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein and an increase in hemoglobin level. A review of the charts of 24 ambulatory male veterans with narcolepsy or narcolepsy/cataplexy showed an impressive number of psychiatric and psychosocial difficulties in these patients, such as poor adjustment to the illness, high unemployability, and disturbed intrafamily relationships. A multicenter retrospective statistical study of 2,400 patients with tumors of the esophagus and cardia was undertaken. Study of individual sites revealed the operability of certain carcinomas of the upper third of the esophagus with a reasonable five-year survival rate despite macroscopic invasion seen in more than half the patients.
