Biopsy specimens from histologically normal human gastric mucosa were examined histochemically with the use of lectins. Significant differences were found in the glycoconjugate patterns of the surface mucous cells between the body and the corresponding antrum. Two lectins (Ulex europaeus agglutinin I and Ricinus communis agglutinin I) specific for fucose and galactose residues stained the apical membrane and the intracellular (perinuclear) region of the antral mucosa more strongly than those of the body (P < 0.04). Body and antral biopsies from patients with Helicobacter pylori-positive chroni…

The knowledge of the exact distribution of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) endemic foci is crucial to plan and implement the optimal prevention of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), including a vaccination program. In Poland, however, there is still no data on the local distribution of TBEV in many areas of the country. Silesian agglomeration area (Southern Poland) is a highly urbanized and industrialized region of the country, where TBE cases are only sporadically recorded. In this study, a total of 4350 adult Ixodes ricinus were collected between September 2010 and June 2012 at twelve locat…

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a potentially life-threatening disease in humans and is caused by a flavivirus spread by infected ticks (Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus). TBE is endemic across much of Central and Eastern Europe and the incidence is increasing, with numbers estimated to be as many as 8755 cases per year. The reasons for this increase are multi-faceted and may involve improvements in diagnosis and reporting of TBE cases, increases in recreational activities in areas inhabited by infected ticks and changes in climatic conditions affecting tick habitats. Vaccination is the …

This study characterizes a model of motor neuron (MN) loss on the molecular, cellular, and behavioral levels. Injection of the toxic lectin Ricinus communis agglutinin I (RCA I or ricin) caused cellular deficit and loss of function by damaging the sciatic nerve. Since the sciatic nerve supplies movement to most of the lower limb, damaging this motor system models lower limb paralysis and the deficits that occur in diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and infantile progressive spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). We used motor-, sensorimotor-, locomotor-, and reflex-based tests to demons…

Babesia divergens is an intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite, transmitted by the tick Ixodes ricinus, and is the main agent of bovine babesiosis in Europe. It is not only a cause of significant loss to the cattle industry; it can also infect immunocompromised humans, causing medical emergencies characterized by rapid fulmination and parasitemias that may exceed 70%. The current emphasis in Europe on sustainable agriculture and extensification is likely to lead to an increase in vector tick populations with increased risk of infection. Despite the veterinary and zoonotic importance of this para…

Galactose-free immunoglobulin G (IgG), which is known to be higher in the sera of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, was prepared from IgG of healthy volunteers using enzymes. Its reactivity to lectins was analyzed. The galactose-free IgG showed no reactivity to Ricinus communis agglutinin 120 but displayed greater reactivity to concanavalin A and Lens culinaris lectin than did intact human IgG. Then, IgG in serum samples was bound to protein A immobilized on a nitrocellulose membrane, and its reactivity to biotinylated concanavalin A was measured with streptavidin-conjugated horseradish pero…

The aim of the present study was to analyse the current epidemiological situation with respect to TBE in the new federal "Länder" of Germany and in Saarland through detection of the TBEV genome in unengorged ticks using an RT-PCR technique. 22,273 ticks (Ixodes ricinus) were collected in the five new "Länder" (and some in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg) and divided into 294 pools. It was possible to detect TBEV RNA in six pools of ticks from Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania [4], Brandenburg [1], Thuringia [1] (and in three pools from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg). The nucleotide sequence data of …

The basic problem in the study of tick-borne virus diseases is to establish where the virus is maintained in nature. In general, this focus will be found where there are large and relatively stable populations of ticks, small rodents and insectivores. In the Tribec region the principal vector of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is Ixodes ricinus, although other species can circulate the virus under suitable conditions. The virus can persist during winter either in starving nymphs or adults or in non-starving larvae or nymphs. It can also persist in hibernating mammals, but this is a less importan…

BACKGROUND: Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a tick-borne disease caused by the blood parasites Theileria equi, Theileria haneyi, and Babesia caballi transmitted primarily by hard ticks (Ixodidae). The clinical courses of EP range from asymptomatic to severe, and chronic infections for several years support the transmission among hosts.
METHODS: Over a period of two years, blood and fecal samples were taken from horses (n = 18) on a single farm in eastern Austria, starting with the first confirmed case of T. equi infection. Hard ticks (n = 1525 of Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Haema…

BACKGROUND: Borrelia miyamotoi and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) are important zoonotic agents transmitted by Ixodes ricinus ticks, which are widely distributed across Central Europe. Understanding the spatial distribution of these pathogens' prevalence will help identify areas with increased infection risk and facilitate the implementation of effective preventive measures.
METHODS: We analysed 12,955 I. ricinus ticks collected from 142 towns in the Czech Republic between 2016 and 2018. The ticks were pooled into 2591 groups of five and tested using duplex quantitative polymerase cha…

BACKGROUND: The common tick Ixodes ricinus and the taiga tick I. persulcatus are the main tick vectors of Borrelia spirochaetes, TBE virus (TBEV) and of several other zoonotic pathogens in the western and eastern areas, respectively of the Palaearctic region. Recently, populations of the taiga tick were, for the first time, detected in northern Sweden. This prompted us to investigate if they harbour human pathogens.
METHODS: A total of 276 I. persulcatus ticks (136 males, 126 females and 14 nymphs) and one I. ricinus nymph was collected by the cloth-dragging method in northern Sweden in July-…

Spirochetes were cultivated from 17% of 114 Ixodes ricinus ticks in the Stockholm area. Three strains of these spirochetes were selected for studies by electron microscopy. These three strains had definite morphological similarities to spirochetes of the genus Borrelia, as judged by the number of flagella, absence of cytoplasmic tubules, and dimensions. The three strains were not identical, but seemed to consist of two different kinds of cells, one with eight and one with eleven flagella. The three strains were also shown to react with a monoclonal antibody that reacts with Lyme disease spiroc…

The aim of this study was to assess the viability of an opportunistic population of Hyalomma rufipes, as evidence of reproduction had been documented in the southern part of Central Europe, specifically Hungary, in 2022. To assess the current situation, tick collections targeting various mammalian species were organized with the assistance of local veterinarians between September 2022 and May 2024. Over the study period, 1502 ticks were collected; however, none belonged to the Hyalomma genus. Dermacentor reticulatus dominated in our sample population (n = 963), followed by Ixodes ricinus (n = …
