Based on the goal progress theory, we examined whether cueing an unresolved goal triggers state rumination in athletes and consequently leads to performance deterioration. However, experimental approaches are usually conducted in the laboratory and only rarely in the field. Therefore, the aim of this proof-of-concept study was to verify whether the findings obtained in previous experimental studies could be transferred and confirmed in the field. For this purpose, the study was applied during regular training sessions. Fifty soccer players (f = 17, m = 33, age range: 14-18 years; Mage = 16.38)

The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of sodium-butyrate supplementation on gastrointestinal function and the inflammatory response to ruminal acidosis (RA) challenge in cows. Four nonlactating cows with a rumen cannula were assigned to two treatments in a crossover design. Treatments were ruminal administration of sodium-butyrate (BUT) or control (CON). Sodium-butyrate was provided as Gustor BP70 and administered at a butyrate dose of 0.04% per kg body weight. The CON premix was made by replacing sodium-butyrate with wheat bran. Experimental periods were 28 days long with 21-day

Milk fat production is highly influenced by nutrition and rumen fermentation. Rumination is an essential part of the ruminant digestive process and can serve as an indicator of rumen fermentation. The objective of this research was to quantify variation in rumination time between and within dairy herds and test for relationships between rumination time and milk fat production and fatty acid (FA) profile as a proxy of rumen fermentation. Our hypothesis was that rumination may indicate disruptions to rumen fermentation and that cows that spent less time ruminating would have lower milk fat due t

Cognitive models have consistently recognised pre-event and post-event rumination as maintaining factors in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of a state-based measure of pre-event and post-event rumination in SAD: The Socially Anxious Rumination Questionnaire (SARQ), which was formerly known as the Thoughts Questionnaire. In particular, we examined the factor structure, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, sensitivity to treatment response, clinical cut-off scores (relative to non-clinical participants), and

A method of the registration of the feed intake and ruminating behaviour of sheep which uses piezoelectric converters was tested. The appliance-technological solution and the feasibility and routine measurings are described. It showed that measurings on the basis of acceleration registration produced similar results as the 'halter method with plate feelers' used so far and that disturbance of the test animals is reduced.

Salmonella spp. are major zoonotic pathogens and an important cause of foodborne disease. However, information on the occurrence of salmonellosis in small ruminants in The Netherlands is limited, and no specific control programme exists for sheep and goats. This study investigated temporal trends, serovar distribution, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and outbreak characteristics of salmonellosis in Dutch sheep and goats, using surveillance and diagnostic data from the national animal health monitoring system of Royal GD (GD). Overall, salmonellosis in small ruminants was relatively rare, bu…

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease of small ruminants caused by the peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), which is classified into four distinct genetic lineages (I-IV). A critical concern is the rapid and widespread expansion of lineage IV (LIV) across West Africa over the past decade. In this study, we generated full or partial genome sequence from 26 new PPRV samples, including historical (pre-2000) and recent African LIV isolates, offering the first opportunity to investigate the evolutionary history of LIV in Africa and identify genetic events potenti…

A retrospective study on 135 cases of teat and udder surgical conditions in 129 small ruminants is described. On 19 repairs of teat lacerations, a primary- and a secondary-intention healing in 13 (68%) and in 4 (21%) cases, respectively, was observed; 2 (11%) had poor response and consequent mastitis. Good outcome and first-intention healing in 100% of the fistula repairs (2 cases), thelectomies (5 cases), teat neoplasm removals (14), and mastectomies (2 cases) were observed. Among 26 teat curettage cases, all 18 (69%) unilateral lesions treatment had a good outcome versus the 8 (31%) with bil…

Gastrointestinal nematodes, particularly Haemonchus contortus, represent a major threat to ruminant health and productivity worldwide, largely due to the widespread emergence of anthelmintic resistance. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, benzimidazole resistance has previously been confirmed in domestic ruminants; however, data on wildlife remain lacking. Given the frequent spatial and temporal overlap between domestic and wild ruminants on shared pastures, this study aimed to investigate the occurrence of benzimidazole-resistant H. contortus genotypes within a multi-host system. During the 2024/2025 …

The etiological agents of cystic echinococcosis comprise a species complex, Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s. l.). Despite high endemicity, the disease remains neglected in most parts of the globe, including India. The present study aimed at investigating the genotypes of Echinococcus granulosus s. l. circulating in sheep and goats in two states (Haryana and Himachal Pradesh) and a union territory (Chandigarh) of north India. Out of 1049 slaughtered small ruminants (n = 314, 394, and 341 from Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana, respectively), 85 (n = 53, 17, and 15 from Chandigarh,…

The majority of pregnancy loss in ruminants occurs during the first two months of gestation, and a failure in placenta development is a major cause of pregnancy loss in cattle after day 20. Gaining a cell-type level understanding of normal placental development is essential for uncovering how this critical organ, responsible for nutrient exchange, gas transfer, and waste removal, fails during pregnancy loss. This study integrated single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) from sheep and cattle during early placental development. Nineteen distinct cell populations were identified across species, wi…

Zoonotic helminth parasites are naturally transmitted between animals and humans and have public health importance. A cross-sectional study was carried out from November 2023 to July 2024. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence, associated risk factors, and economic impact of zoonotic helminth infections in ruminants slaughtered at Haromaya Municipal Abattoirs, Eastern Ethiopia. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the animals used in this study. The prevalence was determined based on records of parasitic infections identified during postmortem examinations of 400 animals…

Coxiellosis is an important zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii. In most animals, the disease is subclinical, whereas in humans, more pronounced clinical manifestations are observed. Domestic ruminants, especially goats, act as an important reservoir of the agent. In animals, it causes reproductive disorders and is excreted in high numbers along with abortion contents. Molecular characterization of C. burnetii strains is very important in epidemiological investigations and is useful in outbreak investigations and identification of probable source of the agent. To date, no such studies…

Pneumonic pasteurellosis is a highly significant infectious disease globally, posing a major economic threat to small ruminants (SR) in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Although antibiotics have been effective in treating this disease, farmers in remote areas of Ethiopia often prefer traditional herbal medicines to manage respiratory infections in SR. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of crude extracts from three selected medicinal plants-Nicotiana tabacum, Psidium guajava, and Solanum incanum-against respiratory infections caused by Pasteurella multocida and Mannh…
