Increasing partner cooperation is an established approach to reducing intimate partner violence. This strategy, known in the literature as "gender transformation," benefits mental and physical health of women and men. Less is known about the potential for gender transformation strategies to improve the nurturing context for children. We hypothesize that increasing partner cooperation, a common benefit of community-based empowerment programs, would decrease child maltreatment through reducing intimate partner conflict and improving maternal mental health. This study utilizes cohort data from wo

Accurate reporting of antiretroviral therapy (ART) uptake is crucial for measuring the success of epidemic control. Programs without linked electronic medical records are susceptible to duplicating ART initiation events. We assessed the prevalence of undisclosed ART use at the time of treatment initiation and explored its correlates among people presenting to public ambulatory clinics in South Africa. Data were analyzed from the community-based delivery of ART (DO ART) clinical trial, which recruited people living with HIV who presented for ART initiation at two clinics in rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: There is broad agreement that antenatal care (ANC) interventions, skilled attendance at birth and management of complications arising after delivery are key strategies that can tackle the high burden of maternal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. In Kenya, utilisation rate of these services has remained low despite a government policy on free maternal care. The present study sought to understand what factors are leading to the low healthcare seeking during pregnancy, child birth and postnatal period in Siaya County in Kenya.
METHODS: Six Focus Group Discussions were conducted with 5

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Rural communities often have worse health outcomes, have less access to care, and are less diverse than urban communities. Much of the research on rural health disparities examines disparities between rural and urban communities, with fewer studies on disparities within rural communities. This report provides an overview of racial/ethnic health disparities for selected indicators in rural areas of the United States.
REPORTING PERIOD: 2012-2015.
DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: Self-reported data from the 2012-2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were pooled to evaluate ra…

INTRODUCTION: Birth preparedness and complication readiness (BPCR) is a strategy to promote timely use of skilled maternal and neonatal care during childbirth. According to World Health Organization, BPCR should be a key component of focused antenatal care. Dakshina Kannada, a coastal district of Karnataka state, is categorized as a high-performing district (institutional delivery rate >25%) under the National Rural Health Mission. However, a substantial proportion of women in the district experience complications during pregnancy (58.3%), childbirth (45.7%), and postnatal (17.4%) period. Ther…

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, creating significant health risks and adding strain to healthcare systems, particularly within rapidly aging societies. Rural older adults are especially vulnerable due to limited healthcare resources, lower socioeconomic status, and weaker support networks. Guided by the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) framework, this study aims to investigate chronic disease management behaviors among older patients in rural China and identify factors shaping their KAP dimensions to inform risk-responsive intervent

Community-based organisations (CBOs) play a critical role in implementing HIV programmes, many of which have historically relied on United States (U.S.) donor funding. Recent U.S. funding cuts have disrupted community-based HIV programmes, underscoring the need to understand implementers' experiences to support sustainable service delivery. This study explored how funding instability affected community-based HIV programmes in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A qualitative, exploratory design was employed using interviews and focus group discussions with purposively selected youth frontline w

INTRODUCTION: Community health workers (CHWs) are central to primary healthcare (PHC) delivery and infectious disease control in low-income settings. In Madagascar, CHWs are mandated to contribute across multiple national disease programmes, yet evidence on their actual involvement and its determinants remains limited, particularly for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB).
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey between March and June 2024 among CHWs in four regions (Analamanga, Atsimo Andrefana, Androy and Anosy). Using two-stage cluster sampling, districts and public primary health centres

Leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease caused by Leptospira spp. poses significant public health and economic challenges. Its transmission is favored in interface environments where wild and synanthropic rodents acting as maintenance hosts contaminate surroundings with urine. Additionally, water sources can harbor leptospires, serving as an infection risk for humans and animals. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Leptospira spp. in surface and underground water resources, detect leptospiras in wild and synanthropic rodents, and identify/genotype isolation in rural environments from Tan
