We audited and analysed the adverse effects and safety of postoperative pain management on 2509 consecutive patients under care of the Acute Pain Service at a tertiary referral teaching hospital over a 32-month period. The paper is aiming to evaluate the SI calculation for children with ROP in clinical practice with respect to the prognosis and possible shortening of follow-up interval. The SI calculation and anamnestical evaluation was done in all preterm neonates referred for ROP screening in Faculty Hospital in Olomouc within 36 months interval with the stress to the relation of SI and ROP stage. Regarding to the prognosis SI corresponds well with ROP stage in children with higher risk, when asymmetrical so with the worse eye. This study was an open evaluation of the efficacy and safety of Ketoconazole, 15 mg/kg/day orally for 3 weeks in 7 evaluable patients with Visceral Leishmaniasis in Kenya. Of all the seven patients who received ketoconazole, none had appreciable clearance of parasites from the splenic aspirate smears that were microscopically examined. Drug-induced achlorhydria in experimental animals results in excessive hypergastrinaemia, ECL-cell hyperplasia and ECL-cell carcinoidosis. The safety and efficacy of abrasive cytology, using the cytobrush, were evaluated in 300 pregnant patients. When compared to conventional cytology obtained with a cotton-tipped applicator there was no difference in adverse pregnancy events. Smear adequacy (containing endocervical cells) was statistically (P less than 0.01) and clinically increased from 21 to 86%. The use of abrasive cervical cytology was associated with a twofold increase in the incidence of abnormal smears.

We performed a retrospective review to investigate the safety of prehospital naloxone administration by paramedics as part of a protocol for all patients presenting with an acutely depressed level of consciousness (LOC). The prevalence of naloxone-induced vomiting, seizures, hypotension, hypertension, and cardiac arrest was sought from the prehospital records of 813 patients treated during a 12-month period. Topical minoxidil (Rogaine) has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treatment of androgenetic alopecia. It has been approved for such use in many other countries. This paper is a review and summary of the reported efficacy and safety of topical minoxidil in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. The results of anecdotal and controlled clinical trials are included. Realistic appraisal of the restorative and/or preventative potentials of topical minoxidil in androgenetic alopecia is needed.

The capacity of merthiolate (also known as thimerosal), a mercury organic compound used as preservative in vaccines, to induce chromosomal aberrations was studied in vivo in experiments on mice. The metaphasic method of the registration of anomalies was used. In a dose of 3.3 micrograms/kg body weight merthiolate did not produce a damaging effect on the chromosomes of marrow, spleen and embryonal liver cells. Cyclophosphamide (in a dose of 25-50 micrograms/kg) used as positive control induced a significant rise in the frequency of chromosomal transformations.

Treatment of epileptic seizures in patients with hepatic porphyrias is a challenging problem due to enzymatic induction activity of phenobarbital (PB), phenytoin (PHT), carbamazepine (CBZ), and clonazepam (CZP). We present the case of a patient with partial seizures treated with PHT and showing clinical signs and biochemical abnormalities of porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT). We withdrew PHT and treated the patient with sodium valproate (VPA). We followed the patient for 6 months during VPA therapy. Comparing dose levels for pentetrazol antagonism or antiaggressive activity with those causing motorial side effects in mice brotizolam (2-bromo-4-(2-chlorophenyl)-9-methyl-6H-thieno[3,2-f]-1,2,4-triazolo [4,3-alpha]-1,4-diazepine, We 941, Lendormin) showed consistently larger dose ranges than diazepam. This gives evidence that brotizolam may offer the advantage of not causing motorial side effects during therapeutic use as do many other diazepines.

The side effect profile and safety of fluoxetine are reviewed. Side effects reported more frequently with fluoxetine than with tricyclic antidepressants are nausea, nervousness, and insomnia. Anticholinergic side effects are reported less often with fluoxetine. Analysis of adverse experiences leading to discontinuations suggests that this drug has very few serious side effects. A ten-year experience with operations on the pericardium in 71 consecutive patients was reviewed. The patients ranged in age from nine months to 75 years old. Fifty-three patients were operated upon for pericardial effusion and 14 for pericardial constriction.
