Monitoring of protein secondary structure during surimi thermal processing using hyperspectral imaging: comparison of spectral, image-texture, and data-fusion strategies.

Surimi, a processed seafood product known for its distinctive texture and high protein content, poses significant challenges for maintaining quality during its complex processing. This study investigates changes in protein secondary structure content during two-stage water bath (TSWB) heating of surimi, utilizing hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for rapid, non-destructive monitoring. Surimi samples were heated at 40 °C for 30 min followed by 90 °C for 20 min, with protein secondary structure data recorded at 5-min intervals. Three predictive models were developed using hyperspectral data: spectral-

Clinical phenotypes associated with outcomes following deep brain stimulation for childhood dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: Although deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an accepted treatment for childhood dystonia, there is significant heterogeneity in treatment response and few data are available to identify ideal surgical candidates. METHODS: Data were derived from a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis of DBS for dystonia in children that was previously published. Outcomes were assessed using the Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale for movement (BFMDRS-M) and for disability (BFMDRS-D). The authors used partial least squares, bootstrapping, and permutation statistics to extract

Dying with motor neurone disease, what can we learn from family caregivers?

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, people with neurodegenerative illness are cared for at home until close to death. Yet, discussing the reality of dying remains a social taboo. OBJECTIVE: To examine the ways, family caregivers of people living with motor neurone disease (MND) experienced the dying of their relative and to identify how health practitioners can better prepare families for end-of-life care. DESIGN: Secondary analysis was undertaken on data sets generated from two longitudinal qualitative studies employing similar data collection and analysis methods. Combining data sets increased parti

Infrapatellar versus suprapatellar approach for intramedullary nailing of the tibia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary nailing (IMN) is a conventional technique for the treatment of tibial shaft fractures. It has been suggested that the suprapatellar (SP) approach holds advantages over the traditional infrapatellar (IP) approach. Current literature lacks adequate data to provide robust clinical recommendations. This meta-analysis aims to determine the efficacy of infrapatellar versus suprapatellar techniques for IMN. METHODS: An up-to-date literature search of the Embase, Medline, and registry platform databases was performed. The search was conducted using a predesigned search stra

Molecular pathways associated with transcriptional alterations in hyperparathyroidism.

Hyperparathyroidism is characterized by the oversecretion of parathyroid hormone biochemically and increased cell proliferation histologically. Primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism exhibit distinct pathophysiology but share certain common microscopic features. The present study performed the first genome-wide expression analysis directly comparing the expression profile of primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Microarray gene expression analyses were performed in parathyroid tissues from 2 primary hyperparathyroidism patients and 3 secondary hyperparathyroidism patients. Unsupervised

Secondary analysis of a scoping review of health promotion interventions for persons with disabilities: Do health promotion interventions for people with mobility impairments address secondary condition reduction and increased community participation?

BACKGROUND: Secondary conditions can have very serious outcomes for people with physical disabilities. Such consequences can range from immobility due to pressure sores to withdrawal and isolation due to depression, decreasing participation in the community. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To further investigate these assumptions, we conducted a review of the literature on health promotion interventions that include physical activity for adults with disabilities to determine whether they have a positive effect on the reduction of secondary conditions and increased community participation. METHODS: We

Lyme Disease in Maine: a Comparison of NEDSS Surveillance Data and Maine Health Data Organization Hospital Discharge data.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector borne disease in the United States and is a major public health concern in Maine. Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) monitors Lyme disease through a passive surveillance system. In order to validate the Lyme disease surveillance system, Maine CDC was interested in comparing trends with a secondary data source. Specifically, Maine CDC was interested in comparing trends by age group, gender, geography, and timelines. Also, because hospitalization due to Lyme disease is rare, this analysis provided an opportuni

A test of the false positive bias hypothesis.

An evaluation of the hypothesis that adolescent gamblers are biased toward the production of false positive responses proposed by Derevensky et al. was tested. The results of secondary analysis of available data supported the hypothesis for items on the South Oaks Gambling Screen and items from the DSM-IV screening instrument. The conclusions were presented as tentative in view of the modest sizes of the observed effects. A number of limitations to the analysis are also described.

Cost-effectiveness of CYP2C19-guided antiplatelet therapy in patients with acute coronary syndrome and percutaneous coronary intervention informed by real-world data.

Current guidelines recommend dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) consisting of aspirin and a P2Y12 inhibitors following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). CYP2C19 genotype can guide DAPT selection, prescribing ticagrelor or prasugrel for loss-of-function (LOF) allele carriers (genotype-guided escalation). Cost-effectiveness analyses (CEA) are traditionally grounded in clinical trial data. We conduct a CEA using real-world data using a 1-year decision-analytic model comparing primary strategies: universal empiric clopidogrel (base case), universal ticagrelor, and genotype-guided escalation.

RNA-Seq-Based Transcriptomic Analysis of Saccharopolyspora spinosa Revealed the Critical Function of PEP Phosphonomutase in the Replenishment Pathway.

Spinosyns, the secondary metabolites produced by Saccharopolyspora spinosa, are the active ingredients in a family of novel biological insecticides. Although the complete genome sequence of S. spinosa has been published, the transcriptome of S. spinosa remains poorly characterized. In this study, high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) technology was applied to dissect the transcriptome of S. spinosa. Through transcriptomic analysis of different periods of S. spinosa growth, we found large numbers of differentially expressed genes and classified them according to their different functions. Ba

Development of a novel model for accurate prediction of secondary Candida pneumonia in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Given the increased risk factors such as the wide application of various dose forms of corticosteroids and broad-spectrum antibiotics in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) in recent years, the incidence of invasive Candida pneumonia secondary to AECOPD tends to increase. However, Candida infections secondary to AECOPD are often neglected in clinical practice, or even misdiagnosed as bacterial infections, resulting in disease deterioration due to delayed diagnosis. Knowing that early diagnosis and timely treatment can obviously improve
