Mindful self-compassion for veteran women with a history of military sexual trauma: feasibility, acceptability, potential benefits, and considerations.

Background: Military sexual trauma (MST) is reported by up to 74% of women veterans in the United States and is a driver of poor behavioural and physical health. Self-compassion is a transdiagnostic, protective factor linked with improved posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and health behaviours. Thus, Mindful Self-Compassion training (MSC) may help ameliorate MST-related impacts. However, MSC can also temporarily increase distress (i.e. backdraft). Delivering it with elective trauma-informed yoga (TIY), which regulates acute distress, may help address this issue. Objective: This

Sexual quality of life, self-compassion and desire to use onco-sexology support by cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Cancer and its treatments can affect patients' sexual quality of life, yet the use of onco-sexology support remains uncommon. Understanding psychological factors such as self-compassion may help explain patients' desire to seek such support (DUOSS). AIM: To evaluate the role of self-compassion in DUOSS, depending on patients' sexual quality of life. METHODS: Five hundred cancer patients were contacted by mail; 96 (19.2%) completed online questionnaires assessing sexual quality of life, self-compassion, and DUOSS. Participants were divided into two groups based on sexual quality o

Temperament and character inventory in homicidal, nonaddicted paranoid schizophrenic patients: a preliminary study.

This study assessed the personalities of 13 murderer schizophrenics using Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory, controlling different factors such as institution, treatment, detention or loss of liberty, and can discriminate between schizophrenic patients involved in homicide, schizophrenics with no past violent behavior, paranoiac murderers, and imprisoned murderers with no psychiatric history. Results show significantly that murderer schizophrenics had significantly higher scores on the subscale, Self-transcendence, than other groups, which suggests that Self-transcendence as meas

Differences Between Adolescents with Self-Harm Ideation and a History of Self-Harm. A Cross-Sectional Study Among Adolescents in Denmark.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide is among the leading causes of death among adolescents. Many risk factors for suicide are well known, and self-harm ideation and behavior are among the strongest. Still, there is limited research on factors that distinguish those with self-harm ideation and those who self-harm. Our aim is to investigate nonpsychiatric risk factors that distinguish between adolescents with self-harm ideation, those who self-harm, and those who engage in repeated self-harm. METHOD: This survey analysis was based on findings from a cross-sectional study (N = 7,943 adolescents). Multinomial log

The more it is needed, the less it is wanted: attitudes toward face-to-face intervention among depressed patients undergoing online treatment.

Many individuals suffering from depression do not actively seek treatment. Self-help strategies represent low-threshold treatment options that are particularly relevant for milder cases. The present study addressed two important issues: (1) we examined depressed individuals' motives and attitudes that may represent barriers to face-to-face treatment; (2) we examined if the participation in an online treatment program facilitates or compromises their willingness to undergo face-to-face treatment. We recruited 210 participants with depression for a trial on the efficacy of an online treatment pr

Reproducible structure with measurement invariance for the Parent-Report Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire: Findings from three independent samples.

Differences in adolescent temperament are associated with innumerable psychological outcomes in the developmental literature and can help link adult personality-based nosology to earlier development. The Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire-Revised is one important measure of adolescent temperament designed to capture constructs within the influential Rothbart temperament model. Yet conflicting factor structures and minimal evidence for measurement invariance across samples and clinical groups have limited its ability to further temperament-based understanding of psychopathology. The goa

Adults with congenital heart disease: psychological needs and treatment preferences.

OBJECTIVE: Approximately one-third of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients have mood or anxiety disorders, the majority of which go untreated. The extent to which this group of patients is interested in psychological services is, however, unknown. This study investigated the perceived psychological needs of patients and their mental health treatment preferences. DESIGN: Participants completed an anonymous survey with items regarding mental health treatment history, preferences for future treatment, Internet use, and interest in peer support. RESULTS: A total of 155 ACHD patients co

Self-perceived, but not objective lymphoedema is associated with decreased long-term health-related quality of life after breast cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND: The primary aim was to compare long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients undergoing sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) alone versus axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), with or without axillary metastases. Secondary aims were to a) investigate agreement between objectively measured and self-reported lymphoedema and b) compare, with respect to HRQoL, women with objective arm lymphoedema without subjective ratings and those with no objective but subjective ratings of arm lymphoedema. METHODS: The three study groups were defined by axillary surgery: 1) SLNB alone

A Review of Self-Management Interventions for People With Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Self-management offers a way of helping people with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to play an active role in managing their condition. Barlow, Wright, Sheasby, Turner, and Hainsworth have defined self-management as the "individual's ability to manage the symptoms, treatment, physical and psychosocial consequences and life style changes inherent in living with a chronic condition." Although commonly used in other chronic health conditions, there has been relatively little exploration of the role of self-management in dementia or MCI. This review aimed to identify group-based psycho

Development of a Multiuser Interactive Health Response Application (MITHRA) for depression in women from a community-based organisation in India.

BACKGROUND: In India, women in rural areas have high rates of depression. They have poor access to mental healthcare resources and, hence, mental health symptoms remain largely unaddressed. Existing mobile telephone applications (apps) do not engage end-users, lack local language options, may not be socioculturally relevant and do not use audiovisual formats. We thus developed a mobile mental health app, Multiuser Interactive Health Response Application (MITHRA), to screen and provide brief behavioural intervention for mild to moderate depression among rural women attending self-help groups (S…

[The treatment of binge eating disorder - a review].

The binge eating disorder is a relatively new type of eating disorders, which was first described in 1992, and became a distinct nosological entity in the system of DSM-5 in 2013. Its central symptom is the binge, which is not followed by compensatory behaviours as in bulimia nervosa. Therefore, the patients are generally obese. The prevalence of the disorder is 1-3% in the general population, but much higher in help-seeking obese subjects. The two main goals of the therapy is body weight reduction, and the cessation of binges. In the pharmacotherapy of binge eating disorder the antidepressant

Addiction disorders.

Substance use disorders are common in primary care settings, but detection, assessment, and management are seldom undertaken. Substantial evidence supports alcohol screening and brief intervention for risky drinking, and pharmacotherapy is effective for alcohol use disorders. Substance use disorders can complicate the management of chronic noncancer pain, making routine monitoring and assessment for substance use disorders an important aspect of long-term opioid prescribing. Patients with opioid use disorders can be effectively treated with methadone in opioid treatment programs or with bupren

[Subjective developmental outcome in bladder exstrophy and epispadias. A pilot study].

The bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC) belongs to one of the most devastating urological malformations affecting the complete urinary tract including the genitalia. A semi-standardized questionnaire was used to evaluate the functional and psychosocial developmental outcome in 122 affected patients recruited from German-speaking self-referral support groups. The questionnaire covered mode of reconstruction, subjective assessment of continence, milestones of child development, education, school performance, level of life satisfaction, anxieties, and in patients older than 16 years partn

Prediction of outcome in neurotic disorder: a 5-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: There have been no previous studies of the outcome of different neurotic disorders in which a prospective group with original randomization to treatment have been followed up over a long period. Such studies are important in identifying the factors associated with good and poor outcome. METHODS: A 5-year follow-up assessment was made of a cohort of 210 psychiatric out-patients seen in general practice psychiatric clinics with a DSM-III diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (71), panic disorder (74) or dysthymic disorder (65) and randomized to drug treatment, cognitive and beha

Patient experiences of therapy for borderline personality disorder: Commonalities and differences between dialectical behaviour therapy and mentalization-based therapy and relation to outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and mentalization-based therapy (MBT) are widely used evidence-based psychological treatments for borderline personality disorder (BPD). The study aimed to establish evidence on common and unique, and helpful and unhelpful, treatment processes. DESIGN: Mixed-methods. METHODS: In-depth qualitative interview data on patient experiences during treatment were combined with quantitative outcome measures in 73 patients diagnosed with a personality disorder and receiving DBT or MBT. RESULTS: Across both DBT and MBT, accounts of learning not to react

CONTEXT: Although reproductive life planning (RLP) is recommended in federal and clinical guidelines and may help insured women make personalized contraceptive choices, it has not been systematically evaluated for effectiveness. METHODS: In 2014, some 984 privately insured women aged 18-40 who were not intending to become pregnant in the next year were randomly assigned to receive RLP, RLP with contraceptive action planning (RLP+) or information only (the control group). Early Check: translational science at the intersection of public health and newborn screening.

BACKGROUND: Newborn screening (NBS) occupies a unique space at the intersection of translational science and public health. As the only truly population-based public health program in the United States, NBS offers the promise of making the successes of translational medicine available to every infant with a rare disorder that is difficult to diagnose clinically, but for which strong evidence indicates that presymptomatic treatment will substantially improve outcomes. Realistic NBS policy requires data, but rare disorders face a special challenge: Screening cannot be done without supportive dat
