Parkrun as self-managed cardiac rehabilitation: secondary analysis of a cross-sectional survey of parkrun in the UK.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac rehabilitation following a cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related illness has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack and hospital admission. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 3-5 days per week of moderate to vigorous exercise. Despite this, only 38% of those eligible complete rehabilitation programmes. Parkrun organises free, weekly, timed, 5 km running or walking events. The aim of this study was to investigate whether parkrun can support self-managed cardiac rehabilitation. METHODS: We undertook a secondary analysis of a survey of UK parkrunners, co

Methodologies Used in Studies of Self-Management Interventions for Urinary Incontinence in Adult Women: An Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) affects approximately 60% of women in the United States and negatively impacts self-esteem, sexual function, participation in social activities, and quality of life (QOL). Self-management interventions show promise for improving UI symptoms and QOL. Previous reviews of UI self-management studies have focused on outcomes for older women. However, the literature lacks a synthesis of methodologies of these studies. PURPOSE: The purpose of this integrative review was to synthesize and evaluate methodologies used in studies of self-management interventions for…

A self-managed exercise therapy program for wrist osteoarthritis: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic wrist osteoarthritis (OA) can eventually lead to pain, muscular weakness, and stiffness of the wrist, which can affect the function of the entire upper limb and reduce the quality of life. Although there is strong evidence that all patients with OA should be offered adequate education and exercises as a first-line treatment, an effective self-management program, including structured education and therapeutic exercises, has not yet been introduced for individuals with wrist OA. This trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an exercise therapy program with joint pro…

Nurses' competence in recognition and management of delirium in older patients: development and piloting of a self-assessment tool.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a common condition in elderly inpatients. Yet, delirium often goes unrecognized in clinical routine. Nurses take an important role in preventing and managing delirium. This study assesses clinical reasoning of nurses using case vignettes to explore their competences in recognizing, preventing and managing delirium. METHODS: The study was conducted as an online survey. The questionnaire was based on five case vignett

The effects of treatment timing on the management of patients with multiple facial fractures and on the self-perception of TMD recovery.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of time on the orofacial functions and on the self-perception of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) recovery in a population of patients with multiple facial fractures. METHODS: Orofacial functions and self-perception of TMD recovery was verified in patients with midface and/or lower face fractures. Patients were divided according to the time between fracture reduction and the clinical assessments: 0-1 month (Group 1), 1-3 months (Group 2), and 15 >3 months (Group 3). RESULTS: Patients in Group 1 presented a greater compromise of swallowing and masticatio

Assessment of medication adherence in children and adults with congenital adrenal hyperplasia and the impact of knowledge and self-management.

BACKGROUND: Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is caused by a deficiency of one of the enzymes required for cortisol biosynthesis. The disease is classified as either classic (severe phenotype), subdivided into simple virilizing (SV) and salt-wasting (SW), or non-classic (NC) CAH. The treatment regime involves life-long glucocorticoid replacement, especially in classic phenotype. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess medication adherence, endocrine knowledge and self-management in patients with CAH and to compare patients' and physicians' assessments of medication adherence. METHODS: A prospectiv…

Feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of an adopted novel self-management intervention among people with epilepsy in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common neurological condition characterized by poor quality of life and associated stigma. Studies in long-term health conditions suggest that self-management interventions improve the quality of life (QoL) and reduce the perceived stigma among people with epilepsy (PWE). Yet, the utilization of these interventions remains low in sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of an adopted novel self-management intervention, Self-management for people with epilepsy and a history of negative health events (SMAR…

Development and evaluation of iManage: A self-management app co-designed by adolescents with sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with sickle cell disease (SCD) are a vulnerable population with high risk of morbidity that could be decreased with effective self-management. Previous research suggests that mobile applications (apps) may facilitate AYA engagement in health-promoting behaviors. The objectives of this study were: (i) describe Internet access and use in AYA with SCD; (ii) identify barriers for self-management in this population; (iii) collaborate with AYA to co-design a mobile app that would minimize barriers; and (iv) evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of…
