Uterine perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComas): report of two cases and literature review.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare tumors characterized by co-expression of melanocytic and smooth muscle markers. PEComas have been reported in a wide variety of anatomic sites. In the female genital tract, PEComas most frequently affect the uterus. PEComas which occur in non-classic anatomic distributions are known as perivascular epithelioid cell tumor-not otherwise specified (PEComa-NOS). PEComas have an unpredictable biologic behavior, with some tumors being unresectable or metastatic at the time of diagnosis. The risk of aggressive behavior of these tumors has been l

Rare Case of Intramural Urinary Bladder Leiomyoma.

Leiomyomas are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the urinary bladder. They account for 0.43% of all bladder tumors. Their incidence is 3 times higher in women than in men. There are approximately 250 cases described in the scientific literature, but none are of Caribbean males. The intramural location of the neoplasm described in this article was uncommon; only 7% of all the leiomyomas of the urinary bladder are found in this location. We present a case of a 65-year-old male with an intramural leiomyoma that was found incidentally during the evaluation of left lower-quadrant abdominal pain

Adenomyoma of the common bile duct.

An unusual case of adenomyoma of the common bile duct is reported. A 31 year-old woman with intermittent epigastralgia was found to have cholestasis and stenosis of the common bile duct. A malignant tumor could not be excluded. Resection of the common bile duct with the tumor was performed with choledochojejunostomy reconstruction. The tumor consisted of glandular hyperplasia and proliferation of smooth muscle fibers and fibrous connective tissue. The patient was well at the 30-month follow-up. Although the benign tumors of the extrahepatic bile ducts are rare, the clinical importance lies in

Angioleiomyoma of the Lower Lip Clinically Mimicking a Mucocele.

Angioleiomyoma is a benign vascular smooth muscle tumor that rarely occurs in the oral cavity, particularly in the lower lip. Because of its nonspecific clinical presentation, it is frequently mistaken for more common benign lesions such as mucoceles. A 58-year-old woman presented with a painless, well-circumscribed submucosal mass of the lower lip that had gradually increased in size. The overlying mucosa was intact without discoloration, ulceration, or tenderness, and the lesion was clinically diagnosed as a mucocele. Excisional biopsy was performed under local anesthesia with careful surgic…

Protective Effects of Incretin Against Age-Related Diseases.

Incretin contains two peptides named glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). Drug therapy using incretin has become a new strategy for diabetic treatments due to its significant effects on improving insulin receptors and promoting insulinotropic secretion. Considering the fact that diabetes millitus is a key risk factor for almost all age-related diseases, the extensive protective roles of incretin in chronic diseases have received great attention. Based on the evidence from animal experiments, where incretin can protect against the pathophysiolog

Decidualization of uterine adenomyoma in a pregnant woman: a case report with immunohistochemical study.

BACKGROUND: Decidualization of uterine adenomyoma has not been reported, to the best of the author's knowledge. AIM: To report a case of uterine adenomyoma with decidualization. CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old pregnant woman with "myoma" underwent cesarean operation and "myomectomy" at 37 gestation weeks. The operation was successful, and the baby and mother were healthy. Grossly, the "myoma" measured 12 × 10 × 10 cm, and the consistency was firm. Microscopically, the tumor was adenomyoma consisting of smooth muscle bundles and endometrial islands. Characteristically, the endometrial stroma showe

Drug-induced abnormalities of potassium metabolism.

Pharmacotherapy has progressed rapidly over the last 20 years with the result that general practioners more and more often use drugs which may influence potassium metabolism at the kidney or gastrointestinal level, or the transmembrane transport of potassium at the cellular level. Potassium abnormalities may result in life-theatening clinical conditions. Hypokalemia is most frequently caused by renal loss of this electrolyte (thiazide, thiazide-like and loop diuretics, glucocorticoids) and the gastrointestinal tract (laxatives, diarrhea, vomiting, external fistula), and may be the result of an

A Case of Cotyledonoid-Dissecting Leiomyoma - The Utility of Laparoscopic Biopsy and Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Analogs.

Cotyledonoid-dissecting leiomyoma, a very unusual form of uterine leiomyoma, often leads to misdiagnosis as a malignant tumor. Here, we describe a case of a 45-year-old nulliparous woman who underwent a laparoscopic biopsy of a large pelvic mass consisting of multiple flaps. Histologically, the mass was composed of smooth muscle fascicle nodules separated by hydropic connective tissue, and exhibited extensive stromal hyalinization. The tumor was diagnosed as a cotyledonoid-dissecting leiomyoma based on the laparoscopic, pathological, and image findings. Prior to performing radical laparotomy,

A Rare Incidence of Metachronous Neurovascular Lesions in a Child.

Neurofibroma is an uncommon benign tumor arising from nerve sheath fibroblasts. The diagnosis of solitary lesions becomes difficult in patients who do not have any family history of neurofibroma. An intra-oral solitary neurofibroma comprises 6.5% of reported cases of neurofibroma. Few cases of intraosseous solitary neurofibroma have been published as per literature. Treatment-surgical resection of tumor has an excellent prognosis with extreme rare malignant transformation which is more commonly seen in neurofibromatosis. A periodic follow-up is necessary in solitary tumors to rule out syndromi

Unusual primary ocular neoplasm in a child: leiomyosarcoma of the ciliary body.

Primary uveal-tract neoplasms are extremely rare in childhood; the most common lesions found are melanocytic. We report here the case of a 7-year-old girl who underwent enucleation of the right eye with clinical suspicion of choroid melanoma as a result of a ciliary body mass that extended to the posterior chamber. Histologically, the neoplasm featured spindle cell morphology, atypia, and mitoses. The tumor expressed smooth muscle alpha actin, pan-actin HHF-35, and desmin, whereas immunohistochemistry for melanocytic markers, such as S-100, Melan-A, and HMB-45, was negative. Based on these fea

Vulvar Leiomyosarcoma Masquerading as a Bartholin's Gland Cyst in an Adolescent.

Sarcomas, tumors of mesenchymal origin, comprise a small percentage of all malignant tumors and are often challenging to diagnose. Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare form of cancer arising from smooth muscle cells. While a soft tissue sarcoma diagnosis is rare in and of itself, LMS diagnosis at an adolescent age is even more unique. Vulvar LMS can easily be misdiagnosed as a benign vaginal lesion, leading to a delay in proper treatment and poorer outcomes. In this case, we present a 14-year-old female who was diagnosed with a grade 2 vulvar LMS that clinically mimicked a Bartholin's gland cyst.

Rare mimicry of meningioma: angioleiomyoma of the falx.

BACKGROUND: Angioleiomyomas (ALMs) are benign soft tissue tumors composed of various size vessels with abundant intervening smooth muscles. Intracranial ALMs are exceedingly rare with 12 reported cases to date presenting as extracerebral masses that mimic cerebral cavernous malformation or meningiomas. OBJECTIVE: We report a case of intracranial ALM of the falx cerebri imitating an atypical meningioma or hemangiopericytoma. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and perfusion-weighted MRI revealed special features that may be helpful to distinguish ALMs from menin

Mineralization in musculoskeletal leiomyosarcoma: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

OBJECTIVE: Mineralization in leiomyosarcoma, a malignant tumor of smooth muscle, has not been widely recognized. In this article, we report our experience with four cases of primary leiomyosarcoma of soft tissue or bone in which mineralization was visible on either radiography or CT. In none of the cases was the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma considered before biopsy. In one case of a soft-tissue leiomyosarcoma, the presence of mineralization was a factor that led to the misinterpretation of the needle biopsy specimen as soft-tissue osteosarcoma. CONCLUSION: Histologically, mineralization in lei

Primary malignant myopericytoma of the left atrium--a tumor of aggressive biological behavior: report of the first case and review of literature.

We report a case of malignant myopericytoma arising in the left atrium with brain, skeletal, and liver metastases, which, to our knowledge, is the first report of this rare entity in this anatomic location. A 52-year-old man presented with progressive blackening of his left field of vision. Magnetic resonance imaging and a computed tomography scan of the brain and thorax showed a heterogeneous mass in the right occipital lobe and a large left atrial floor mass. Excision of the atrial mass showed a circumscribed but unencapsulated malignant spindled neoplasm with a perivascular concentric cellu

S-100 Immunohistochemical Positivity in Rhabdomyoma: An Underestimated Potential Diagnostic Pitfall in Routine Practice.

A 66-year-old man presented with a 2.8 cm lesion of the left vocal cord. On contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans, the tumor extended to the supraglottis, subglottis, paraglottic space and anterior commissure, causing partial obstruction of the laryngeal lumen. At another hospital, a fragmented incisional biopsy was diagnosed as a granular cell tumor, as to the S-100 immunohistochemical positivity. After excision, the tumor revealed to be an adult-type laryngeal rhabdomyoma. The typical cytoplasmic rod-like inclusions and cross striations were more evident in the second specimen. We conf

Angioleiomyoma of the nasolacrimal duct: case report and literature review.

Angioleiomyomas are benign tumors composed of smooth muscle and vascular endothelium. While infrequent in overall prevalence, they are exceptionally rare in the head and neck. Herein, we describe the case of a 65-year-old female who was found to have an angioleiomyoma of the right nasolacrimal duct. Endoscopic excision of the lesion along with medial maxillectomy and dacryocystorhinostomy was performed without complication. The current report is one of the few reported cases of angioleiomyoma of the lacrimal drainage system.

Stromal-derived IGF2 promotes colon cancer progression via paracrine and autocrine mechanisms.

The insulin-like growth factor (IGF)2/IGF1 receptor (IGF1R) signaling axis has an important role in intestinal carcinogenesis and overexpression of IGF2 is an accepted risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC) development. Genetic amplifications and loss of imprinting contribute to the upregulation of IGF2, but insufficiently explain the extent of IGF2 expression in a subset of patients. Here, we show that IGF2 was specifically induced in the tumor stroma of CRC and identified cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) as the major source. Further, we provide functional evidence that stromal IGF2, via

A malignant glomus tumor in the nasal cavity responding to radiation therapy.

Malignant glomus tumors of the head and neck are extremely rare, and to our knowledge, a response to high-dose radiation has not been described previously. We report one case in an 80-year-old woman with right nasal cavity mass. Histological examination revealed sheets of atypical round glomus cells. The presence of increased mitotic activity (25 per 10 high-power fields), cellular atypism, and tumor necrosis suggested malignancy. The smooth muscle actin, vimentin, and h-caldesmon immunohistochemistry stains the tumor cells. Two cycles of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide chemotherapy were done

Cystic Trophoblastic Tumor in a Primary Central Nervous System Post-Chemotherapy Germ Cell Tumor: The First Case Report.

Cystic trophoblastic tumor (CTT) is an uncommon trophoblastic proliferation of germ cell tumor origin, mostly reported in post-chemotherapy metastases of testicular germ cell tumors and rarely primary untreated testicular tumors. To date, we are not aware of occurrence in a non-testicular tumor. A 12-year-old boy presented with limb swelling, increased appetite, weight gain, and precocious puberty. Evaluation revealed right frontal lobe mass and elevated α-fetoprotein and β-human chorionic gonadotrophin. After response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, the tumor was resected. Microscopically, the r
