Rescuing prefrontal cortical excitation-inhibition imbalance with early-life microglial ablation ameliorates ASD-like behaviors in male BTBR mice.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside the presence of restricted and repetitive behaviors. Microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system, play a crucial role in the development of ASD by regulating synaptic development and plasticity. In this study, we investigate the pharmacological effects and underlying cellular mechanisms of PLX3397 (PLX), a selective inhibitor of the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R), for the pharmacological ablation of microglia in the c

Brief intensive social gaze training reorganizes functional brain connectivity in boys with fragile X syndrome.

Boys with fragile X syndrome (FXS), the leading known genetic cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), demonstrate significant impairments in social gaze and associated weaknesses in communication, social interaction, and other areas of adaptive functioning. Little is known, however, concerning the impact of behavioral treatments for these behaviors on functional brain connectivity in this population. As part of a larger study, boys with FXS (mean age 13.23 ± 2.31 years) and comparison boys with ASD (mean age 12.15 ± 2.76 years) received resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan

Romantic relationship quality and functioning for individuals with clinical and sub-clinical social anxiety: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is associated with pervasive functional impairments and chronicity. Romantic relationship functioning and quality for individuals with SAD has been previously explored but existing studies have not been synthesised. AIMS: This scoping review charted existing literature regarding the quality and functioning of romantic relationships for people with SAD and high sub-clinical social anxiety (SA). METHODS: The review used a scoping approach to explore the current evidence base relating to SA, romantic relationship quality and functioning. Articles publis

GABAB Receptor Agonist R-Baclofen Reverses Social Deficits and Reduces Repetitive Behavior in Two Mouse Models of Autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is diagnosed by two core behavioral criteria, unusual reciprocal social interactions and communication, and stereotyped, repetitive behaviors with restricted interests. Excitatory/inhibitory imbalance is a prominent hypothesis for the etiology of autism. The selective GABAB receptor agonist R-baclofen previously reversed social deficits and reduced repetitive behaviors in a mouse model of Fragile X syndrome, and Arbaclofen improved some clinical symptoms in some Fragile X and ASD patients. To evaluate R-baclofen in a broader range of mouse models of ASD, we teste

Treatment of social anxiety disorder using online virtual environments in second life.

Over 80% of people with social anxiety disorder (SAD) do not receive any type of treatment, despite the existence of effective evidence-based treatments. Barriers to treatment include lack of trained therapists (particularly in nonmetropolitan areas), logistical difficulties (e.g., cost, time, transportation), concerns regarding social stigma, and fear of negative evaluation from health care providers. Interventions conducted through electronic communication media, such as the Internet, have the potential to reach individuals who otherwise would not have access to evidence-based treatments. Se

Social cognition impairments in Asperger syndrome and schizophrenia.

Social cognition impairments are well described in both autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger syndrome (AS), and in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. However, little is known about whether there are differences between the two groups of disorders regarding this ability. The aim of this study was to compare social cognition abilities in AS and schizophrenia. Fifty-three individuals (26 men, 27 women) with a clinical diagnosis of AS, 36 (22 men, 14 women) with a clinical diagnosis of schizophrenic psychosis, and 50 non-clinical controls (19 men, 31 women) participated in the study. Body structure/function impairments and activity limitations of post-stroke that predict social participation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability in Brazil, and its prognostic indicators of social reintegration are not well established yet. OBJECTIVE: To identify body structure/function impairments and activity limitations in post-stroke that predict social participation restrictions in the community. METHODS: cohort studies were selected, involving adult post-stroke participants, which investigated body structure and function impairments or activity limitations of post-stroke individuals as predictors of social participation in the community. Studies that included indivi

Clinical trial of modulatory effects of oxytocin treatment on higher-order social cognition in autism spectrum disorder: a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind and crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions with severe impairments in social communication and interaction. Pioneering research suggests that oxytocin can improve motivation, cognition and attention to social cues in patients with autism spectrum disorder. The aim of this clinical trial is to characterize basic mechanisms of action of acute oxytocin treatment on neural levels and to relate these to changes in different levels of socio-affective and -cognitive functioning. METHODS: This clinical study is a randomized, double-blind, cross-over, placebo-controlled, m

"When you first walk out the gates…where do [you] go?": Barriers and opportunities to achieving continuity of health care at the time of release from a provincial jail in Ontario.

We aimed to explore continuity of health care and health barriers, facilitators, and opportunities for people at the time of release from a provincial correctional facility in Ontario, Canada. We conducted focus groups in community-based organizations in a city in Ontario, Canada: a men's homeless shelter, a mental health service organization, and a social service agency with programs for people with substance use disorders. We included adults who spoke English well enough to participate in the discussion and who had been released from the provincial correctional facility in the previous year.

Association of ambient temperature with social isolation among the community-dwelling Chinese older adults: A cross-sectional study in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: The adverse health impacts of ambient temperature have been well-documented, encompassing not only the mortality and morbidity burden but also mood and mental health disorders. However, the relationship between temperature and social isolation remains unexplored. The objective of the current study was to investigate the potential associations between ambient temperature and social isolation among the aging population. METHODS: We took advantage of a cross-sectional survey conducted between January 2017 and November 2018 from a community service program special for older adults age

Challenges of caring for children with mental disorders: Experiences and views of caregivers attending the outpatient clinic at Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar es Salaam - Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that world-wide up to 20 % of children suffer from debilitating mental illness. Mental disorders that pose a significant concern include learning disorders, hyperkinetic disorders (ADHD), depression, psychosis, pervasive development disorders, attachment disorders, anxiety disorders, conduct disorder, substance abuse and eating disorders. Living with such children can be very stressful for caregivers in the family. Therefore, determination of challenges of living with these children is important in the process of finding ways to help or support caregivers to provide

Assessing social cognition and pragmatic language in adolescents with traumatic brain injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in children and adolescents can impair social cognition and communication skills but there are few assessment tools suitable for adolescents. The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT) uses professionally enacted audiovisual vignettes of everyday conversational exchanges and is a valid measure of social perception disorders in adults. This study examined its utility for assessing impairments in social cognition in a group of 16 adolescents with TBI, compared to a group of 16 typically developing (TD) adolescents. Adolescents with TBI were, on average, no diff

[Pervasive developmental disorders].

Pervasive developmental disorders (PDD-ICD10), covering roughly the same entity as the autism spectrum disorders (ASD DSM-IVTR and DSM-V) include a heterogeneous clinical reality. PDD develop in childhood and are characterized by alterations in socialization, communication and behavior disorders with stereotypies and repetitive movements. Autism is included in PDD and has led to many debates in France and to the publication of recommendations and government plans, in recent years. We propose in this article to review the current knowledge of this topic.

The Efficacy of Self-Report Measures in Predicting Social Phobia in African American Adults.

UNLABELLED: Empirical literature pertaining to anxiety in African Americans has been relatively sparse. More recent studies indicate that the construct of social fear is different in African Americans than in non-Hispanic Whites. Although some of these studies have examined factor structure utilizing self-report measures of anxiety in African American samples, none to date have examined the clinical utility of these measures in predicting anxiety diagnoses, particularly social phobia. A total of sixty-five African American adults from the community completed the Fear Survey Schedule-Second Edi

Seeking to understand lived experiences of personal recovery in personality disorder in community and forensic settings - a qualitative methods investigation.

BACKGROUND: Understandings of personal recovery have emerged as an alternative framework to traditional ideas of clinical progression, or symptom remission, in clinical practice. Most research in this field has focussed on the experience of individuals suffering with psychotic disorders and little research has been conducted to explore the experience of individuals with a personality disorder diagnosis, despite the high prevalence of such difficulties. The nature of the personality disorder diagnosis, together with high prevalence rates in forensic settings, renders the understanding of recove

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of community perinatal mental health services on access, experience, recovery/relapse and obstetric and neonate outcomes: the ESMI-II mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health disorders affect one in five mothers during pregnancy or within 2 years post childbirth. These disorders can lead to poor pregnancy and childbirth outcomes and maternal deaths. Additionally, they negatively affect a child's cognitive, social and emotional development. Stigma and a lack of specialised services have limited access to mental health care. National Health Service England invested £365M in community perinatal mental health teams, but their impact on women and infants' outcomes are not known. Develop a taxonomy of community perinatal mental health

Brain-computer interfaces in pediatric populations: research advances, application challenges, and future directions.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) establish direct communication pathways between the brain and external devices. Leveraging the unique neuroplasticity of the developing brain, BCIs have emerged as a novel rehabilitative technology for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, including cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and perinatal brain injury. This review comprehensively examines five major BCI paradigms-P300, motor imagery (MI), steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and

Translational outcomes relevant to neurodevelopmental disorders following early life exposure of rats to chlorpyrifos.

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including intellectual disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are pervasive, lifelong disorders for which pharmacological interventions are not readily available. Substantial increases in the prevalence of NDDs over a relatively short period may not be attributed solely to genetic factors and/or improved diagnostic criteria. There is now a consensus that multiple genetic loci combined with environmental risk factors during critical periods of neurodevelopment influence NDD susceptibility
