Disrupted third visual pathway function in schizophrenia: Evidence from real and implied motion processing.

Impaired motion perception in schizophrenia has been associated with deficits in social-cognitive processes and with reduced activation of visual sensory regions, including the middle temporal area (MT+) and posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS). These findings are consistent with the recent proposal of the existence of a specific 'third visual pathway' specialized for social perception in which motion is a fundamental component. The third visual pathway transmits visual information from early sensory visual processing areas to the STS, with MT+ acting as a critical intermediary. We used f

The impact of early childhood education and care-based interventions on child physical activity, anthropometrics, fundamental movement skills, cognitive functioning, and social-emotional wellbeing: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This review assessed the effectiveness of ECEC-based interventions to improve child physical activity, and intervention impact on child weight-based anthropometrics, fundamental movement skills (FMS), cognitive functioning, and social-emotional wellbeing. Adverse effects and costs were assessed. Finch et al's 2014 systematic review was updated. Electronic databases were searched 10 September 2014 to 27 October 2022. Included studies were randomized controlled trials of ECEC interventions targeting physical activity among children aged 0-6 years. The methodological quality of studies was assess

Are there socioeconomic disparities in geographic accessibility to community first responders to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Ireland?

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Without appropriate early resuscitation interventions, the prospect of survival is limited. This means that an effective community response is a critical enabler of increasing the number of people who survive. However, while OHCA incidence is higher in more deprived areas, propensity to volunteer is, in general, associated with higher socioeconomic status. In this context, we consider whether there are socioeconomic disparities in geographic accessibility to volunteer community first responders (CFRs) in Ireland, wher

Steroid 5α-reductase 2 deficiency leads to reduced dominance-related and impulse-control behaviors.

The enzyme steroid 5α-reductase 2 (5αR2) catalyzes the conversion of testosterone into the potent androgen 5α-dihydrotestosterone. Previous investigations showed that 5αR2 is expressed in key brain areas for emotional and socio-affective reactivity, yet the role of this enzyme in behavioral regulation remains mostly unknown. Here, we profiled the behavioral characteristics of 5αR2 heterozygous (HZ) and knockout (KO) mice, as compared with their wild-type (WT) littermates. While male 5αR2 KO mice displayed no overt alterations in motoric, sensory, information-processing and anxiety-related beha

Altered fusiform connectivity during processing of fearful faces in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) has been associated with hyper-reactivity in limbic brain regions like the amygdala, both during symptom provocation and emotional face processing tasks. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study we sought to examine brain regions implicated in emotional face processing, and the connectivity between them, in patients with SAD (n=14) compared with healthy controls (n=12). We furthermore aimed to relate brain reactivity and connectivity to self-reported social anxiety symptom severity. SAD patients exhibited hyper-reactivity in the bilateral fusiform gyrus

Impaired identification of fearful faces in Generalised Social Phobia.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models and interventions for anxiety assume that socially anxious individuals interpret ambiguous social information in a threatening manner. However, experimental evidence for this hypothesised cognitive bias is mixed. The present study is novel in using a signal detection approach to clarify whether Generalised Social Phobia (GSP) is associated with biased identification of emotionally ambiguous facial expressions. METHODS: 16 patients with GSP and 17 non-anxious volunteers classified ambiguous emotional facial expressions, with each face reflecting a blend of two emot

Perceived psychological safety, state social connection, and student flourishing in collaborative music activities: a three-wave longitudinal study.

Collaborative music activities can support relationships and well-being, but the present study did not directly test music-specific mechanisms such as synchrony or collective expression. Instead, it examined a general interpersonal process within higher music education: whether students' individually perceived psychological safety was longitudinally associated with flourishing through state social connection. A three-wave survey was completed by 341 university music students from 23 groups at three Chinese universities, with approximately 6 weeks between waves. Psychological safety was analyze

Evaluation of a group compassion-based program for perceived social isolation and depression in family caregivers of patients with multiple sclerosis: study protocol for an open-label randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system that causes neurologic disabilities. People with MS may need continuous care from a family caregiver. Caring is associated with physical and mental challenges, including mental health problems such as social isolation and depression. The health of patients is influenced by their caregivers' health status. Therefore, this is a serious challenge faced by nurses in family-centered nursing care. Effective interventions, such as compassion-focused therapy (CFT), are needed to help caregivers continue caregiv

Improving risk perception and uptake of voluntary medical male circumcision with peer-education sessions and incentives, in Manicaland, East Zimbabwe: study protocol for a pilot randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is a key component of combination HIV-prevention programmes. Several high-HIV-prevalence countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including Zimbabwe, are looking to scale up VMMC activities. There is limited evidence on how a combination of social learning from peer education by a role model with different behavioural incentives influences demand for VMMC in such settings. METHODS/DESIGN: This matched-cluster randomised controlled trial with 1740 participants will compare two behavioural incentives against a control with no intervention. In the i

A behavioral intervention for war-affected youth in Sierra Leone: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Youth in war-affected regions are at risk for poor psychological, social, and educational outcomes. Effective interventions are needed to improve mental health, social behavior, and school functioning. This randomized controlled trial tested the effectiveness of a 10-session cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)-based group mental health intervention for multisymptomatic war-affected youth (aged 15-24 years) in Sierra Leone. METHOD: War-affected youth identified by elevated distress and impairment via community screening were randomized (stratified by sex and age) to the Youth Readine

Understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its control measures on women and children: A Zimbabwe case study.

COVID-19 presented countries with unprecedented health policy challenges. For low-income countries in particular, policymakers had to contend with both the direct threats posed by COVID-19 as well as the social, educational, and economic harms associated with lockdown and other infection prevention and control measures. We present a holistic and contextualised case study of the direct and indirect impacts of COVID-19 on women and children, with some assessment of their uneven distribution across socio-economic, age and gender groups. We used different types of primary and secondary data from m

Functional magnetic resonance imaging correlates of emotional word encoding and recognition in depression and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder are among the most prevalent and frequently co-occurring psychiatric disorders in adults and may be characterized by a common deficiency in processing of emotional information. METHODS: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging during the performance of an emotional word encoding and recognition paradigm in patients with MDD (n = 51), comorbid MDD and anxiety (n = 59), panic disorder and/or social anxiety disorder without comorbid MDD (n = 56), and control subjects (n = 49). From smallpox eradication to the future of global health: innovations, application and lessons for future eradication and control initiatives.

Technological advancements, including landmark innovations in vaccinology through molecular virology, and significant transformation and changes in the society have taken place since the eradication of smallpox thirty years ago. The success with eradicating smallpox gave confidence for initiating the eradication of other diseases, such as malaria and polio. However, these efforts have not been as effective, as recorded for small pox, for a variety of reasons. There is now a debate within the global health community as to whether eradication campaigns should be abandoned in favor of less costly

Addressing housing insecurity as a social determinant of health: A systematic review of interventions in healthcare settings.

BACKGROUND: Stable housing is a key social determinant of health. Those experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity are known to have increased healthcare utilization and yet worse healthcare outcomes compared to securely housed individuals. Housing interventions offered via healthcare settings provide an opportunity to reach this population. We conducted a systematic review to 1) identify interventions which address housing insecurity and engage healthcare settings; 2) determine effectiveness of these interventions; and 3) ascertain common characteristics of effective interventions to inf
