Clinical and sociodemographic characteristics as predictors for quality of life in transmasculine and transfeminine individuals receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy.

Healthcare systems and providers have increasingly acknowledged the role and impact of social determinants in overall health. However, gende … in TM individuals while for TF individuals, psychological well-being is associated with stress and social integration. These data suggest that social circumstances are key drivers of QoL and psychological well-being among gender-diverse individuals receiving GAHT with specific differences between TF and TM individuals. This information may be utilized by healthcare …

Integrated care delivery in a rural Norwegian FACT team: an explanatory sequential mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Fragmented interfaces between municipal and specialist services make integrated mental healthcare difficult, and coordination in rural settings presents unique challenges. Flexible Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) aims to reduce fragmentation through multidisciplinary, community-based care. However, evidence remains limited regarding the services rural FACT teams deliver and how integrated care is enacted in everyday practice. This study examined service distribution and the coordination practices that enable integration in a rural Norwegian FACT team. METHODS: We used an expl

Understanding cognitive ageing: individuals, institutions, and inequalities.

Population ageing has drawn growing attention to cognitive ageing as a major public health and social policy issue. However, cognitive ageing is marked by substantial heterogeneity, reflecting not only biological and genetic processes but also the cumulative influence of social, economic, and institutional conditions across the life course. This editorial introduces a Special Issue that advances a social determinants perspective on cognitive ageing by integrating life-course, inequality, and contextual approaches across diverse geographical settings. Drawing on longitudinal surveys, administra

Similar processing of novelty in rat dorsal and intermediate CA1 despite differences in spatial tuning.

Elucidating the fundamental neural mechanisms of hippocampal information processing is necessary for understanding memory formation and related brain disorders. Differences in hippocampal genetics, anatomy, and connectivity across the longitudinal axis suggest functional heterogeneity in this structure. The dorsal pole is suggested to be primarily involved in spatial processing, whereas the ventral pole is implicated in emotional processing. Connectivity and genetic studies show this functional segregation is more prominent near their respective poles and weaker toward the intermediate region.

Art as a scaffold for social cognition.

The idea that art connects us to others is culturally compelling, yet empirical evidence linking art engagement to social cognition remains mixed across paradigms, methods, and timescales. We develop the thesis that art functions as a scaffold for social cognition, rather than a direct intervention on social-cognitive abilities. From this perspective, art structures the conditions under which social cognition unfolds by shaping whether individuals engage with socially meaningful content, how deeply they become involved, and whether they return to similar experiences over time. The scaffold mod

Cardiovascular and electrodermal responses to support and provocation: interpersonal methods in the study of psychophysiological reactivity.

This study examined the joint and independent effects of experimentally manipulated social contexts and individual differences in hostility and perceived social support on physiological responses to a social stressor, while illustrating the use of the interpersonal circumplex for integrative social psychophysiological research. Undergraduate women completed a speech task in a supportive, neutral, or provoking context and completed measures of hostility and perceived social support. The provoking context evoked the largest blood pressure and heart rate (HR) responses, followed by the neutral an

Maternal high-fat diet and autism-relevant behavioural domains: insights from social and anxiety-like behaviours in rodent models.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition involving interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Among environmental exposures, maternal nutrition has received increasing attention. This narrative review critically discusses preclinical evidence on maternal high-fat diet (HFD) exposure and autism-relevant behavioural domains in rodent offspring, focusing on social and anxiety-like behaviours and their underlying neurobiological mechanisms. Maternal HFD exposure was associated with alterations in sociability, social novelty, direct social interaction, a

Subjective aging and psychological well-being in older adults: a narrative review and multilevel framework integrating perceptual, behavioral, and sociocultural pathways.

As the global population ages, understanding the psychological determinants of well-being in later life has become an important public health priority. A growing body of evidence suggests that how older adults experience, interpret, and evaluate their own aging-the domain of subjective aging-shapes psychological well-being. However, this literature remains fragmented across social gerontology, health psychology, and cultural psychology, with limited integration of perceptual, behavioral, and sociocultural mechanisms. This narrative review synthesizes recent and foundational literature on subje

Setting multidisciplinary intervention goals for spinal muscular atrophy patients utilizing the international classification of functioning, disability, and health: a pilot study in a small sample sizes.

BACKGROUND: Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic neuromuscular disorder causing progressive motor function loss, respiratory and swallowing impairments, and significant limitations in activities of daily living (ADLs) and social participation. While gene therapies have enhanced life expectancy, functional management remains crucial. Despite the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) being a valuable framework for patient-centered care, its integration in setting multidisciplinary rehabilitation goals for SMA patients is underexpl

Stimulation of the Social Brain Improves Perspective Selection in Older Adults: A HD-tDCS Study.

There is evidence for dissociable, causal roles for two key social brain regions in young adults. Specifically, the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) is associated with embodied perspective taking, whereas the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) is associated with the integration of social information. However, it is unknown whether these causal brain-behaviour associations are evident in older adults. Fifty-two healthy older adults were stratified to receive either rTPJ or dmPFC anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation in a sham-controlled, double-blinded, repeated

Clinical utility of the ECLECTIC framework in providing culturally-informed autism spectrum disorder evaluations: A pediatric case-based approach.

Objective: Social cognition does not exist within a vacuum. One's culture and surrounding social environment influence 1) development of social skills and behaviors, and 2) society's expectations regarding "normal" behavior versus behaviors consistent with the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Use of a comprehensive cultural framework such as Fujii's ECLECTIC model undergirds valid ASD testing by enhancing clinician awareness of potential biases during clinical decision-making and by supporting culturally relevant recommendations. Method: Four diverse pediatric patients presenting f
