A network perspective on heroin use: associations between craving, withdrawal symptoms, dependence, loss of control, and psychosocial consequences.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a complex diagnosis characterized by symptoms such as craving, tolerance, withdrawal, and impaired social, occupational, or recreational activities. However, there is a lack of data about the interconnectedness of these symptoms, in particular the links between withdrawal symptoms and psychosocial impairment. The present study uses symptom network analysis to better understand these associations surrounding heroin use. METHODS: We used data from individuals who reported heroin use during the past 12 months in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health

Psychometric Properties of the Spanish Version of the Gender Ideology and LGBTQ+ Lobby Conspiracies Scale (GILC): Evidence from a Chilean Sample.

Conspiracy beliefs targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals have attracted increasing attention in social and political psychology due to their role in prejudice, social exclusion, and resistance to social change. Despite growing interest in this phenomenon, validated instruments for assessing LGBTQ+-related conspiracy beliefs in Spanish-speaking populations remain limited. The present study aimed to adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Gender Ideology and LGBTQ+ Lobby Conspiracies Scale (GILC) in a Chilean sample. A

Abnormal gray matter structural covariance networks associated with suicidal ideation in adults with major depressive disorder: Evidence from the REST-meta-MDD consortium.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation (SI) is common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and may represent a clinically meaningful phenotype within MDD rather than merely a marker of more severe depressive symptoms. SI may involve disturbances in affective regulation, cognitive control, reward valuation, self-referential processing, and pain/social-threat processing. Although MDD with SI has been linked to gray matter abnormalities in anterior cingulate, prefrontal, limbic, and cerebellar regions, it remains unclear whether these abnormalities show SI-related morphometric covariance patte

Sociocultural factors during COVID-19 pandemic: Information consumption on Twitter.

The purpose of the research is to describe the sociocultural factors that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Twitter is used as an instrument for data collection. The study is qualitative and uses the netnographic method. To analyze the flow of messages posted on Twitter, the model proposed by Perez-Cepeda and Arias-Bolzmann (2020), which describes sociocultural factors, is taken as a basis. The semantics that people use are a type of functional knowledge that reveals sociocultural factors. Sentiments were analyzed through lexicon-based methods, which are the most suitable. The categorizati

Altered Connectivity Between Cerebellum, Visual, and Sensory-Motor Networks in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Results from the EU-AIMS Longitudinal European Autism Project.

BACKGROUND: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging-based studies on functional connectivity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have generated inconsistent results. Interpretation of findings is further hampered by small samples and a focus on a limited number of networks, with networks underlying sensory processing being largely underexamined. We aimed to comprehensively characterize ASD-related alterations within and between 20 well-characterized resting-state networks using baseline data from the EU-AIMS (European Autism Interventions-A Multicentre Study for Developing New Medica

When Migraine Meets People: A Qualitative Study on the Negative and Positive Influences of Episodic Migraine on Interpersonal Relationships.

BACKGROUND: Episodic migraine carries a significant social burden beyond medical symptoms that disrupt interpersonal relationships with family, friends, and coworkers. This study aimed to explore its influence on interpersonal relationships from the perspective of patients. METHOD: A sample of N = 20 participants, including 10 males and 10 females, with an age range of 27 to 32 years, was engaged in semi-structured interviews. A reflexive thematic approach within a post-positivist framework was used to explore themes derived from qualitative data. RESULTS: The analysis revealed a predominanc

Strategies for Self-Care and Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Findings From an International Survey of Social Workers in Palliative Care.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused many hospice and palliative care services to reconfigure existing services and invent new ones using technology and remote working. Workloads increased in response to demand and healthcare professionals risked professional burnout, stress and emotional exhaustion. The aim of this study was to conduct secondary analysis of international survey data from palliative care social workers regarding the support received during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional online survey-based design was used. Social workers in palliative care were invited to participate via mem

No one runs alone: Combining community-based program evaluation with photo elicitation interviewing among people experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is associated with poor physical and mental health, but social support may reduce negative health outcomes. A community-academic partnership with Back on My Feet (BoMF), an organization in Baltimore, MD serving people experiencing homelessness, used photo elicitation interviews (PEI) to explore how social interactions within program activities improved mental health among participants. METHODS: Between October 2018 and June 2019, 29 BoMF participants were recruited. Participants were provided digital cameras and photographed what BoMF meant to them. Participants prese

Abnormal large-scale brain functional network dynamics in social anxiety disorder.

AIMS: Although static abnormalities of functional brain networks have been observed in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD), the brain connectome dynamics at the macroscale network level remain obscure. We therefore used a multivariate data-driven method to search for dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) alterations in SAD. METHODS: We conducted spatial independent component analysis, and used a sliding-window approach with a k-means clustering algorithm, to characterize the recurring states of brain resting-state networks; then state transition metrics and FNC strength in th

Comparing Perceptions of Technology-Based Interactions Among Depressed Older Adults Participating in a Randomized Controlled Trial During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to extreme social isolation and emotional distress. Technology-based contacts were used as substitutes for in-person interactions. Yet, studies suggest inequities in technology access and mixed perceptions regarding technological solutions to facilitate social interactions and deliver services among older adults. In this study, we explored and compared experiences with social isolation and adaptation to technology among low-income White and ethnically minoritized older adults. METHODS: Analysis of semi-structured interviews embedded in a randomized contro

The negative effects of prejudice on interpersonal relationships within adolescent peer groups.

Social development theories highlight the centrality of peer groups during adolescence and their role in socializing attitudes and behaviors. In this longitudinal study, we tested the effects of group-level prejudice on ensuing positive and negative interpersonal interactions among peers over a 7-month period. We used social network analysis to identify peer groups based on sociometric nominations, followed by multilevel modeling of the effects of sexual prejudice at the group level on interpersonal interactions among individuals in these groups. As hypothesized, the interpersonal interactions…

Cognitive bias modification for social anxiety: protocol for a living systematic review of human studies and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is a heightened fear and discomfort in social situations. Cases of elevated distress and impaired functioning can lead to a clinical diagnosis of social anxiety disorder. Altering cognitive biases associated with social anxiety has been suggested as potentially beneficial; however, little is known about the comparative effectiveness of such interventions. The aim of this living systematic review is to examine the efficacy of cognitive bias modification for reducing social anxiety. METHODS: We will search multiple electronic databases for randomised controlled trials
