Triple Jeopardy in Oral Health: Additive Effects of Immigrant Status, Education, and Neighborhood.

PURPOSE: To estimate the additive effects of parent's nativity status/language spoken at country of birth, education, and area-level socioeconomic status (SES) on untreated dental caries among children aged 5 to 9 y in Australia. METHODS: Cross-sectional population-based data were obtained from the 2014 National Child Oral Health Study (N = 12,140). Indicators of social position used to explore additive effects on dental caries included nativity status, language, university degree, and neighborhood socioeconomic level. Multiple-way interactions were examined, and departure from additivity res

Manual ability as a marker of dependency in geriatric women.

Little is known about the factors responsible for the institutionalization of the elderly. This study's objective was to discover markers associated with nursing home placement. Fifty-six white ambulatory women over 63 yrs of age were selected from 3 settings encompassing a range of dependency: 20 women from nursing homes; 16 women who lived in their own homes but requiring social assistance and 20 totally independent women. Each woman was examined for factors that might be associated with her state of dependency: age, socioeconomic status, morale, education, strength of social network, number

Heightened response to positive facial cues as a potential marker of resilience following childhood adversity.

Background: Childhood maltreatment profoundly influences social and emotional development, increasing psychiatric risk. Alterations in the implicit processing of threat-related cues following early abuse and neglect represent a marker of mental health vulnerability. Less is known about how early adversity influences the perception of positive social cues, despite their central role in establishing and maintaining social interactions and their association with better mental health outcomes. Methods: The sample consisted of 42 children and adolescents with substantiated childhood maltreatment exp

Is social support associated with hypertension control among Ghanaian migrants in Europe and non-migrants in Ghana? The RODAM study.

Hypertension (HTN) control is crucial in preventing HTN-related complications such as stroke and coronary heart disease. Yet, HTN control remains suboptimal particularly among sub-Saharan African (SSA) populations partly due to poor self-management. Self-management of HTN is influenced by social support, but the evidence on the role of social support on HTN control particularly among SSA populations is limited. This study assessed the association between multiple proxies for social support and HTN control among Ghanaians resident in Ghana and Europe. The Research on Obesity and Diabetes among

From Prominent to Proportionate: Social Perceptions of Patients With Prominent Ears Undergoing Otoplasty.

Prominent ears are one of the most common congenital craniofacial differences in children. While not functionally impairing, their visibility can cause psychosocial distress, particularly from peer ridicule. Otoplasty is frequently performed to modify auricular projection and normalize appearance; however, its effect on social perception by lay observers remains unclear. This study evaluated how otoplasty influences public perception of pediatric patients. Preoperative and postoperative photographs of 2 patients were rated by 998 adult respondents through an online survey. Participants evaluat

Associations between social factors and spinal pain-related disability in people with back pain and/or neck pain.

PURPOSE: Pain-related disability is often managed using the biopsychosocial model. However, social factors, such as living situation, financial hardship and employment status, are understudied. This study focused on the association between social factors and pain-related disability after correcting for important biological factors (e.g. BMI) and psychological factors (e.g. depression) in people with spinal pain. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were used from the fourth wave (N = 4,007) of the second Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS-2), a representative cohort study

The structural equation modeling of personal aspects, environmental aspects, and happiness among older adults living alone: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The happiness of older adults living alone warrants attention because they are more vulnerable to unhappiness than those living with families. The present study aimed to construct and test a structural equation model to elucidate the relationship among participation in social activities, satisfaction with the neighborhood environment, subjective health status, and happiness in older adults living alone in South Korea. METHODS: Secondary data of 2768 older adults (605 males and 2163 females) living on their own were extracted from the 2017 Korean Community Health Survey and used in

Cognitive and symptomatic predictors of functional disability in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognition and negative symptoms play a major role in predicting functional outcomes in patients with schizophrenia. Few studies have assessed the relationship between functional outcomes and the MATRICS consensus cognition battery (MCCB), which will be central to future clinical trials of cognitive enhancing agents. AIMS: To assess the role of individual MCCB domains on functional outcomes. METHOD: 185 stable outpatients with schizophrenia were enrolled and assessed with the MCCB, Social Adjustment Scale-II (SAS-II) and Multidimensional Scale for Independent Functioning (MSI

Immigrant status, living arrangements, and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults.

OBJECTIVES: This research draws from social integration theory to explain the relationship between living arrangements and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults. Particular attention is given to identifying differences between nonimmigrants and immigrants. METHODS: The data come from the baseline and first 2-year follow-up of the Health and Retirement Study, which were collected in 1992 and 1994. The analysis is based on 6,391 primary respondents who were aged 51 to 61 at the baseline. Descriptive statistics, cross-sectional ordinary least squares regression models, and longi

Needs assessment and social environment of people living with HIV/AIDS in Hong Kong.

The present study examined the needs and perceived social environment among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Hong Kong (N=289). Sizeable demands were expressed for medical treatment, provision of HIV-related information, financial assistance and psychological counselling. Physical health (about 38%) and social discrimination (about 24%) were the two commonly named 'most difficult aspects' of their life. In addition, over 50% felt that they were discriminated in different settings such as in the workplace and in social relationships. Social support was also often lacking among many PLWHA

Intergroup bias.

This chapter reviews the extensive literature on bias in favor of in-groups at the expense of out-groups. We focus on five issues and identify areas for future research: (a) measurement and conceptual issues (especially in-group favoritism vs. out-group derogation, and explicit vs. implicit measures of bias); (b) modern theories of bias highlighting motivational explanations (social identity, optimal distinctiveness, uncertainty reduction, social dominance, terror management); (c) key moderators of bias, especially those that exacerbate bias (identification, group size, status and power, threa

Socioeconomic, demographic, and occupational risk factors for suicide amongst males: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Suicide mortality remains a serious public health issue amongst adult males, yet there is a lack of comprehensive reviews addressing suicide risk with occupation and socioeconomic status in this selected population. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesises data drawn from multiple countries, with the purpose of highlighting how these societal factors contribute to male suicide. METHODS: Using PRISMA reporting guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science for English-language studies published 1993 to 2023. St

Heterogeneous gender gaps in mental wellbeing: Do women with low economic status face the biggest gender gaps?

Gender differences in depression are globally documented across a wide range of studies that analyse self-reports of depressive symptoms or clinical diagnoses. Extensive research fails to identify any single reason for this finding but given systematic variation in depressive symptomatology across social groups, gender differences must derive at least partly from environmental or social factors. Among the social factors that are considered most important are those relating to gender differences in socio-economic status and the underlying gender division of labor. In this study, we add to exist

The case for transitional services and programs for older adults reentering society: a narrative review of US departments of correction and recommendations.

PURPOSE: Older adults who are or have been incarcerated constitute a growing population in the USA. The complex health needs of this group are often inadequately addressed during incarceration and equally so when transitioning back to the community. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the literature on challenges older adults (age 50 and over) face in maintaining health and accessing social services to support health after an incarceration and to outline recommendations to address the most urgent of these needs. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This study conducted a narrative literature revi

The perceived social rejection of sexual minorities: Substance use and unprotected sexual intercourse.

INTRODUCTION: This study presents associations between the perceived social rejection of sexual minorities and tobacco, alcohol and cannabis consumption and unprotected sexual intercourse in the capital of Greece, Athens. This is the first Greek study to evaluate the concept of the minority stress theory on sexual minorities' substance use and unprotected sexual intercourse. In addition, this is among the first international studies to examine whether periods of adverse economic conditions are associated with sexual minorities' substance use and unprotected sexual intercourse.
