[Long-term dyskinetic remissions in shift-like schizophrenia].

The study sample included 32 patients with long-term remissions (from 5 to 33 years) developed after episodes of shift-like schizophrenia with catatonic disorders. All patients showed a good social and professional adjustment. This type of remissions was designated as "dyskinetic" due to the predomination of motor disturbances, microcatatonic symptoms of stupor and excitement. The diskinetic remission was characterized by stereotype urge to act, psychomotor passivity and decompensation "catatonic reactions". Two types of dyskinetic remission were singled out: hyper- and hypokinetic. Their psyc

Structural bioinformatics study of PNP from Schistosoma mansoni.

The parasite Schistosoma mansoni lacks the de novo pathway for purine biosynthesis and depends on salvage pathways for its purine requirements. Schistosomiasis is endemic in 76 countries and territories and amongst the parasitic diseases ranks second after malaria in terms of social and economic impact and public health importance. The PNP is an attractive target for drug design and it has been submitted to extensive structure-based design. The atomic coordinates of the complex of human PNP with inosine were used as template for starting the modeling of PNP from S. mansoni complexed with inosi

[Clinical and psychophysiological characteristics of headache in childhood].

Complex clinical psychophysiological as well as neurophysiological examinations of 210 children with migraine, chronic tension headache (CTH) and chronic posttraumatic headache (CPH) were carried out. Detailed comparative description of cephalalgia types is presented. In a CPH structure, predominates CTH (77.5%), combined type (14.1%); migraine (5.7%) and cervicogenic cephalalgia (2.7%) occur less often. CPH development mechanisms do not principally differ from non-traumatic cephalalgia pathogenesis. Trauma plays a role of a non-specific trigger in realization of these mechanisms. Chronic ceph

Novel Network Analysis of County- and Individual-Level Factors Associated With Functional Outcomes After Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants are known to impact stroke risk and poststroke outcomes. Using complexity science, we examined interrelations between county- and individual-level social and clinical determinants influencing stroke functional outcomes. METHODS: We examined a retrospective cohort of 2 961 664 patients diagnosed with acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke from 2218 US hospitals participating in the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Registry from 2013 to 2019, linked by ZIP code with the county-level institute for health metrics and evaluation data. We constructed multilayer networks,

What is the nature of peer interactions in children with language disorders? A qualitative study of parent and practitioner views.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Children with Language Disorders (LDs) can exhibit increased levels of social withdrawal, aggression and problems managing social conflicts. The reasons underlying this pattern of social interaction profiles remain unclear. This qualitative study aimed to document the nature of social interactions between children with LDs and their peers, and to evaluate explanations for their social behaviour, as understood by parents and practitioners. METHODS: This study focused on children with LDs who spend school hours with other children with LDs. Three parent focus groups (n = 8)

Social determinants of mental health influencing the emergency department experiences of Latinx children and adolescents with mental and behavioral health crisis and their care partners: An interpretative phenomenological analysis study.

Latinx populations in the United States experience a disproportionate burden of mental and behavioral health challenges and face significant barriers to care, often relying on emergency departments during crises. The study explores the social determinants of mental health shaping emergency department experiences of Latinx children with mental and behavioral health conditions and their care partners. This study draws on a subset of participants from a larger, multiethnic qualitative study by focusing specifically on Latinx children (ages 6-18; n = 4) and their care partners (n = 5). In-depth in

Social media in myositis care - an exploratory mixed-methods study among myositis patients (SociMyo).

Myositis is a rare autoimmune disease primarily affecting muscles, with potential involvement of the skin, heart, and lungs. Patients often experience delays in diagnosis, lack of adequate information, and limited support for disease management. Social media has emerged as a valuable tool to address these gaps by facilitating information exchange, peer support, and community building. However, its role in myositis care is not yet well understood. This study aims to explore how myositis patients use social media, focusing on shared content, perceived benefits and challenges, and the overall imp

A qualitative analysis of transitions to heroin injection in Kenya: implications for HIV prevention and harm reduction.

BACKGROUND: Heroin injection is emerging as a significant dimension of the HIV epidemic in Kenya. Preventing transitions to injecting drug use from less harmful forms of use, such as smoking, is a potentially important focus for HIV prevention. There is, however, little evidence to support comprehensive programming in this area, linked to a shortage of analysis of the social and structural context for transitions, particularly in low-income settings. We explore accounts of transitions from smoking to injecting in Kenya to understand the role of individual, social and structural processes. MET

Listening to a Consonant Chord Progression during Live Face-to-Face Gaze Enhances Neural Activity in Social Systems.

Although music has been associated with increased prosocial behavior, the underlying mechanisms for music-facilitated social benefits are not known. We test the hypothesis that chord progressions promote social bonding between dyads by shared temporal alignment of frequency spectra. Two musical conditions were presented to 20 pairs of participants (equal numbers of males and females), one with either a structured chord or predictable progression and the other with an unstructured and unpredictable composition of the same notes. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy signals were recorded simult

Immune logics, immune selves and immunoprivilege in the COVID era: Perspectives from marginalised social groups.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by a fraught immunopolitics in which the health and interests of powerful social groups have been … ge. The study demonstrates how these logics are relational and dynamic, situated in time, place and social structures, and constantly responding to these conditions. Factors beyond stigma, racialisation or socioeconomic disadvantage may contribute to immunoprivilege, often in complicated ways. Immunoprivilege was viewed as established through individual behaviours …

Help me, and I'll help myself (and others). A narrative inquiry into older women's experiences of health and homelessness.

BACKGROUND: While women's homelessness is increasingly recognized as a gendered issue, experiences of aging while homeless remain underexplored. This study examined how older women navigate intersections of aging, health, and homelessness, focusing on how these experiences are shaped by structural and social factors. METHODS: Women's lived experiences were explored and interpreted using a narrative approach. Eleven women (aged 57-65 years) took part in two in-depth interviews each, followed by participation in three sequential focus groups. Data were analyzed iteratively informed by Riessman'

Resource access and use: Impacts on distal minority stressors for racial and sexual diverse youth in rural and urban contexts.

Sexually and racially diverse (SD) adolescents experience elevated proximal and distal minority stressors that vary across school, community, and policy contexts. Limited research has examined how access to and use of LGBTQIA+ supportive structures, such as Gender and Sexualities Alliances (GSAs), LGBTQIA+ community centers, and affirming school staff, shape distal minority stress for racially and sexually diverse youth across geographic settings. Using cross-sectional national sample data of SD adolescents from the Adolescent Stress Experiences Over Time Study (ASETS; N = 1076), this study ap

Importance of collaboration and contextual factors in the development and implementation of social participation initiatives for older adults living in rural areas.

INTRODUCTION: To encourage isolated and vulnerable older adults to accomplish meaningful social activities, occupational therapists and other healthcare workers must collaborate with community organisations and municipalities to develop and implement initiatives fostering social participation. In a rural Regional County Municipality in Quebec (Canada), four social participation initiatives were selected and implemented: (1) Benevolent Community, (2) urban transportation system, (3) creation of a website on social participation activities, and (4) social participation workshop. Role of self-esteem and family-level social capital in the pathway from victimization to aggression.

BACKGROUND: Children's aggressive behaviors remain a critical global concern that may cause harm to other children's behavioral, emotional and psychological, social, and academic functions. However, in this context, the possibility that children's aggressive behaviors might be responsive consequences triggered by the antecedent victimization should not be dismissed. In order to explore the pathway from victimization to later aggression, the structural relationships among victimization, self-esteem, social capital within the family, and aggression were tested, followed by further examination of

Post-weaning social environment shapes reward learning, social hierarchy, and pCREB signaling in adult male rats exposed to early-life adversity.

Adverse experiences during early life are known to disrupt neuronal development and maturation of reward circuits, affecting both social behavior and responses to reward-predicting stimuli. We have previously demonstrated that rats exposed during early life to denial of expected reward in the form of maternal contact (DER, animal model of maternal neglect) develop anhedonia, increased aggressive play-fighting behavior, aberrant prefrontal structure, reward system overactivation, deficient adult learning, and disturbed social dynamics during a group-based food anticipation (FA) learning task. Staying connected: How close friendships supported emotional well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Close social relationships are critical for emotional well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted in-person contact with friends, particularly among young adults, for whom friendships support key developmental goals. In a longitudinal study of U.S. college students (N = 205; 10,088 observations), we examined how close friendship networks related to emotional well-being during the early months of the pandemic (May-October 2020). Leveraging prepandemic social network data and 28 days of ecological momentary assessments of affect and social interactions, we found that students with more

Peer Rejection and Group Autonomy in the Latency Stage: A Qualitative Analysis of Children's Voices in the Classroom Context.

Background/Objectives: Social rejection during the latency stage is a significant risk factor for children's emotional and social development. Whereas earlier research focused primarily on individual characteristics of rejected children, contemporary perspectives emphasize peer-group processes, including norm formation, hierarchies, and social status structures. Although autonomy has been widely examined as an individual developmental construct, less attention has been given to its possible collective expression within the classroom peer group. This study aimed to explore how children understa

Bilateral amygdala damage impairs the acquisition and use of common ground in social interaction.

OBJECTIVE: The development of "common ground," or mutual knowledge of shared information, is believed to require the ability to update a mental representation of another person's thoughts and knowledge based on verbal information and nonverbal social and emotional signals, to facilitate economical communication. As in other forms of everyday social communication, the development of common ground likely requires the orchestration of multiple cognitive processes supported by various neural systems. Here, we investigate the contribution of the amygdala to these processes. METHOD: SM, a patient w

Social cohesion in contexts of violence against women: evidence from Honduras and implications for public policy.

This cross-sectional, descriptive study assesses social cohesion among women in Honduras using microdata from the 2022 First National Specialized Survey on Violence Against Women and Girls (ENESVMN). Utilizing a multidimensional framework, the analysis examines relational, institutional, and normative variables based on an effective sample of 5,962 interviewed women. The normalized-weight results show that 27.1% (nominal 95% CI: 26.02-28.28) of participants exhibit high social cohesion, 26.6% (95% CI: 25.50-27.74) exhibit moderate cohesion, and 46.3% (95% CI: 45.00-47.53) exhibit low cohesion.
