Mediastinal myxopapillary ependymoma primary or late metastases of paracoccygeal ependymoma: a case report.

A 25-year-old woman presented in 2002 with progressive shortness of breath and weight loss. A computed tomographic scan of the chest showed a huge anterior mediastinal mass, and pathological examination of a mediastinoscopic needle biopsy revealed typical myxopapillary ependymoma, an extremely unusual diagnosis at this site. Further workup and questioning of the patient revealed that she had opted not to disclose a history of surgery for right gluteal fold mass in 1993, which was primarily treated with surgery followed by radiotherapy for relapse. Review of the histology of the excised mass sh

High resolution and dynamic sequential computed tomography. Use in the evaluation of glomus complex tumors.

Computed tomography (CT) has been used to investigate the presence, site, and extent of glomus complex tumors. High resolution CT scanning can accurately evaluate invasion of cervical soft tissues, intratympanic or intracranial extension, and bony involvement of the skull base. Glomus tumors can be differentiated by CT angiographic dynamic study from most other tumors in the head and neck because of their profuse vascularity and their intense enhancement seen on dynamic CT during arterial phase. A glomus tympanicum or extension of a glomus jugulare into the hypotypanum can be best demonstrated

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Volumetric Changes During Palatal Wound Healing After Soft-Tissue Harvesting.

The growing demand for aesthetic and functional outcomes in periodontal and implant procedures has increased the use of connective tissue grafts harvested from the palate. Objective monitoring of the donor site remains challenging because healing involves progressive three-dimensional morphological changes and visible chromatic variations of the mucosal surface. This pilot feasibility study proposes an optical sensing and computer-vision workflow based on longitudinal intraoral scanner acquisitions to quantify palatal wound healing after soft-tissue harvesting. A TRIOS 3 intraoral scanner was

Primary adult renal pelvic soft tissue giant cell tumor: A rare case report.

RATIONALE: Pyelonephric giant cell tumor of soft tissue represents an exceptionally uncommon neoplasm of the urinary tract with limited malignant potential. It typically follows a benign clinical trajectory, with distant metastases occurring infrequently; reports of aggressive disease culminating in lethal multiorgan dissemination are exceedingly rare. The present case seeks to augment the clinical dataset and elucidate the features of its malignant transformation. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 72-year-old male presented with a 3-day history of persistent right-sided low back pain, without fever, gross

Evaluation of ballistics euthanasia applied to stranded cetaceans using ethological and post-mortem computed tomography assessment.

Debilitated stranded cetaceans with low survival likelihood, may require euthanasia to avoid further suffering. Euthanasia can involve chemical or physical methods, including ballistics. Ballistics should cause instantaneous, permanent insensibility through brainstem disruption. Despite wide application, there is limited understanding of ballistics-related welfare outcomes. We opportunistically examined behaviour of three maternally-dependent cetaceans following shooting and the related cranial disruption post-mortem using computed tomography (PMCT). Our aim was to understand whether a 'humane

Osteofibrous Dysplasia of the Clavicle Managed with Intravenous Bisphosphonates: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Low-grade myxofibrosarcoma (LGMFS) is a neoplasm of soft tissues. According to the World Health Organization, LGMFS is a malignant myofibroblastic tumor arising from deep soft tissues with potential for recurrence and late metastatic spread. The incidence estimates are 0.18/million, accounting for 0.6% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. It can directly invade the bone and metastasize to bone; however, primary osseous low-grade myxofibrosarcoma is a rare entity. Thus, recognizing atypical presentations of uncommon neoplasms are a pertinent skill for the radiologist due to significant im

What is the Effect of Posterior Osteophytes on Flexion and Extension Gaps in Total Knee Arthroplasty? A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Posterior compartment knee osteophytes may pose a challenge in achieving soft-tissue balance during total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Obtaining symmetry of flexion and extension gaps involves balance of both bony and soft-tissue structures. We hypothesize that space-occupying posteromedial femoral osteophytes affect soft-tissue balance. METHODS: Five cadaveric limbs were acquired. Computed tomography scans were obtained to define the osseous contours. Three-dimensionally printed, specimen-specific synthetic posterior femoral osteophytes were fabricated in 10-mm and 15-mm sizes. TKAs

Differences in soft-tissue thickness changes after bimaxillary surgery between patients with vertically high angle and normal angle.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated soft-tissue thickness changes after bimaxillary surgery according to vertical facial patterns in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion with mandibular prognathism. METHODS: Forty-three Korean patients (16 men and 27 women; mean age, 22.6 ± 4.1 years) with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent bimaxillary surgery were divided into 2 groups: normal-angle group (N group) and high-angle group (H group), on the basis of the presurgical angle of the mandibular plane relative to the sella-nasion plane (SN-MP). Changes in hard-tissue landmarks and soft-tissu

Iodine-enhanced micro-CT imaging: methodological refinements for the study of the soft-tissue anatomy of post-embryonic vertebrates.

The now widespread use of non-destructive X-ray computed tomography (CT) and micro-CT (µCT) has greatly augmented our ability to comprehensively detail and quantify the internal hard-tissue anatomy of vertebrates. However, the utility of X-ray imaging for gaining similar insights into vertebrate soft-tissue anatomy has yet to be fully realized due to the naturally low X-ray absorption of non-mineralized tissues. In this study, we show how a wide diversity of soft-tissue structures within the vertebrate head-including muscles, glands, fat deposits, perichondria, dural venous sinuses, white and

Ankle impingement: a review of multimodality imaging approach.

Ankle impingement is defined as entrapment of an anatomic structure that leads to pain and decreased range of motion of the ankle and can be classified as either soft tissue or osseous (Bassett et al. in J Bone Joint Surg Am 72:55-59, 1990). The impingement syndromes of the ankle are a group of painful disorders that limit full range of movement. Symptoms are due to compression of soft-tissues or osseous structures during particular movements (Ogilvie-Harris et al. in Arthroscopy 13:564-574, 1997). Osseous impingement can result from spur formation along the anterior margin of the distal tibia

AI-Powered Multimodal Modeling of Personalized Hemodynamics in Aortic Stenosis.

Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common valvular heart disease in developed countries. High-fidelity preclinical models can improve AS management by enabling therapeutic innovation, early diagnosis, and tailored treatment planning. However, their use is currently limited by complex workflows necessitating lengthy expert-driven manual operations. Here, we propose an AI-powered computational framework for accelerated and democratized patient-specific modeling of AS hemodynamics from computed tomography (CT). First, we demonstrate that the automated meshing algorithms can generate task-ready geom

Finite element analysis of different surgical approaches in various occlusal loading locations for zygomatic implant placement for the treatment of atrophic maxillae.

The aim of this study was to compare two different types of surgical approaches, intrasinus and extramaxillary, for the placement of zygomatic implants to treat atrophic maxillae. A computational finite element simulation was used to analyze the strength of implant anchorage for both approaches in various occlusal loading locations. Three-dimensional models of the craniofacial structures surrounding a region of interest, soft tissue and framework were developed using computed tomography image datasets. The implants were modelled using computer-aided design software. The bone was assumed to be

Brief communication: Two and three-dimensional analysis of bone mass and microstructure in a bog body from the Iron Age.

Human remains from peat bogs, called "bog bodies," have yielded valuable insights into human history because of their excellent preservation of soft tissue. On the other hand, the acidic environment of the peat leads to an extensive demineralization of skeletal elements, complicating their analysis. We studied the skeleton of the bog body "Moora" dated to approximately 650 B.C. Nondestructive evaluation of the bone was made using contact X-rays, peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) analysis, multislice computed tomography (CT) and high resolution micro computed tomography (microC

Serous cystadenocarcinoma of the spleen.

The commonly seen primary malignant neoplasms of the spleen are angiosarcoma and lymphoma. We present a case of serous cystadenocarcinoma of the spleen. It was presumed to be originated from dropped nonmalignant ovarian tissue, which was accidentally implanted to the splenic surface during hysterectomy and bilateral salpingooophorectomies for torsion of right fallopian tube 9 and half years ago and transformed into serous cystadenocarcinoma later. Computed tomography demonstrated a multilocular predominantly cystic tumor with internal soft tissue components in the spleen.

[Lipoma as the cause of intussusception of the rectum in a 46-year-old woman].

We present a case with a 46-year-old woman who had experienced six days of abdominal pain and some days of anal bleeding. She had no prior medical history. At the clinical examination it was found that she had a soft abdomen, but there was tenderness in the lower part. A computed tomography showed an intussusception of the sigmoideum into the rectum. An oncological resection was performed, since it could not at the time of the operation be determined if it was a malignant proces. The histology showed a benign submucosal lipoma.

Axial loading with hyperflexion injury to the atlas resulting in crushed lateral masses.

A 40-year-old man was involved in an ATV accident, in which he landed on the top of his head. There was no neurological deficit. A plain radiograph showed prevertebral soft tissue swelling at the atlas and axis level. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated vertical fractures of the anterior aspects of both lateral masses of the atlas, extending to the junction of the lateral mass with the anterior arch bilaterally. There was no lateral offset of the lateral masses. The mechanism of injury is believed to be axial loading along with hyperflexion.

Digital transversal slice imaging in dental-maxillofacial radiology: from pantomography to digital volume tomography.

With digital transversal slice imaging (TSI) as a supplementary program to pantomographic devices and digital volume tomography (DVT), images of the viscerocranium are now possible in several planes. The two procedures, TSI and DVT, are complementary. They should be applied where the indication justifies it in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery for diagnostic and forensic purposes. To minimize patient exposure to radiation, computer tomography (CT) should only be used in complex situations of the viscerocranium where soft tissues are involved or in tumor diagnosis.

Computed tomography of chest wall masses.

The authors argue that CT is superior to other imaging techniques for the examination of the bones and soft tissues of the chest wall. They also note the importance of CT in planning therapy for lesions involving these structures. In support of these theses they present computed tomograms showing 26 different types of lesion involving the chest wall ranging from sternal fracture to malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Malignant neoplasms involving the chest wall by metastasis or direct extension from the breast, lung or mediastinum are emphasized.

Radiological examination of the nasal cavity.

The complex anatomy of the interior of the nose presents a challenge in radiological imaging. Several radiologic modalities applied in the assessment of anomalies and pathologic changes in the nasal cavity are presented, illustrated by reference to various cases. The excellent ability of computed tomography to reveal valuable information concerning both benign and malignant lesions is emphasized. Magnetic resonance imaging has further extended the possibilities in diagnosis because of its high soft-tissue contrast resolution and multiplanar imaging capabilities.

Computed tomography of the sternum.

The author presents his experience with computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of sternal anomalies. The normal anatomy of the sternum and the peristernal soft tissues are described. The embryology, pertinent to the understanding of congenital sternal anomalies, is reviewed. The technique used to image the sternum is briefly explained. Variants of the sternum, traumatic changes, iatrogenic alterations, inflammation, and neoplastic lesions are illustrated. It is concluded that CT offers definite advantages in the evaluation of presumed sternal pathology and should be the examination of choic
