[Inpatient rehabilitation of adult CI users: Results in dependency of duration of deafness, CI experience and age].

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CI) have proven to be a highly effective treatment for severe hearing loss or deafness. Inpatient rehabilitation therapy is frequently discussed as a means to increase the speech perception abilities achieved by CI. However, thus far there exists no quantitative evaluation of the effect of these therapies. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of audiometric data obtained from 1355 CI users compared standardized and qualitative speech intelligibility tests conducted at two time points (admission to and discharge from inpatient hearing therapy, duration 3-5 weeks). T…

Expanding the phenotype of Kleefstra syndrome: speech, language and cognition in 103 individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Speech and language impairments are core features of the neurodevelopmental genetic condition Kleefstra syndrome. Communication has not been systematically examined to guide intervention recommendations. We define the speech, language and cognitive phenotypic spectrum in a large cohort of individuals with Kleefstra syndrome. METHOD: 103 individuals with Kleefstra syndrome (40 males, median age 9.5 years, range 1-43 years) with pathogenic variants (52 9q34.3 deletions, 50 intragenic variants, 1 balanced translocation) were included. Speech, language and non-verbal communication wer

A comparison of speech and language therapy techniques for dysarthria in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is a common manifestation of Parkinson's disease that increases in frequency and intensity with the progress of the disease (Streifler 1984). Up to 20% of Parkinsonian patients are referred for speech and language therapy (S & LT), its aim being to improve the intelligibility of the patient's speech. OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy and effectiveness of novel S & LT techniques versus standard S & LT to treat dysarthria in patients with Parkinson's disease. To compare the efficacy and effectiveness of one S & LT technique versus a second form of S & LT to treat Parkin

Effectiveness of remotely delivered speech therapy in persons with Parkinson's disease - a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence supports the merits of speech therapy in Parkinson's disease, but the current practice of multiple in-house treatments is demanding for patients. We therefore assessed the effectiveness of remotely delivered and personalised speech therapy on improving quality of life and speech quality in persons with Parkinson's disease. METHODS: We performed a single blinded randomised controlled trial (the PERSPECTIVE study), comparing 8 weeks of personalised remote speech therapy to no intervention (waiting list design). Patients with reduced speech intelligibility were in…

Sustained neural rhythms reveal endogenous oscillations supporting speech perception.

Rhythmic sensory or electrical stimulation will produce rhythmic brain responses. These rhythmic responses are often interpreted as endogenous neural oscillations aligned (or "entrained") to the stimulus rhythm. However, stimulus-aligned brain responses can also be explained as a sequence of evoked responses, which only appear regular due to the rhythmicity of the stimulus, without necessarily involving underlying neural oscillations. To distinguish evoked responses from true oscillatory activity, we tested whether rhythmic stimulation produces oscillatory responses which continue after the en

The Role of Verbal Fluency in the Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome Scale in Friedreich Ataxia.

Cerebellar pathology engenders the disturbance of movement that characterizes Friedreich ataxia (FRDA), yet the impact of cerebellar pathology on cognition in FRDA remains unclear. Numerous studies have unequivocally demonstrated the role of the cerebellar pathology in disturbed cognitive, language and affective regulation, referred to as Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome (CCAS), and quantified by the CCAS-Scale (CCAS-S). The presence of dysarthria in many individuals with ataxia, particularly FRDA, may confound results on some items of the CCAS-S resulting in false-positive scores. This

Integrating human linguistic insights into AI: theory-driven representation for multilingual text-to-speech.

This paper explores the integration of human linguistic insights into multilingual text-to-speech (TTS) systems by evaluating the Featurally Underspecified Lexicon (FUL) as a theory-driven input representation. Unlike data-intensive end-to end models, FUL offers a compact, interpretable feature set grounded in phonological principles, enabling scalable and equitable TTS development for low-resource languages. We provide a mapping from language-specific phones to FUL feature vectors via a SAMPA intermediate and incorporate these features into a modified FastSpeech architecture. Experiments were

The effect of feedback and practice on the acquisition of novel speech behaviors.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of manipulating several parameters of motor learning theory on participants' phonetic acquisition and retention of utterances in a foreign language (Korean). METHOD: Thirty-two native English-speaking participants naïve to the Korean language were each given 10 Korean sentences to practice and learn. The independent variables in the study were the number of practice trials and the feedback schedule. The participants listened to sentences delivered by a native speaker and received feedback according to the schedule. Participant responses were then judged

Two-flap palatoplasty: description of the surgical technique and reporting of results at a single center.

Two-flap palatoplasty is commonly used to treat cleft palate defects, but only a few reports on outcomes have been published in the literature. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 257 cases of cleft palate treated with two-flap palatoplasty at a single center in Greece over a 13-year period. Our outcomes data included surgical complication rates, the results of speech assessments, midface development, and other parameters. We found a low rate of short- and long-term complications that required revision surgery, such as symptomatic fistula (5.4%) and velopharyngeal insufficiency (5.3%). Sp
