Surgical repair of ruptured alteral ankle ligaments.

Fifty-two of 86 repaired lateral ankle ligaments were reevaluated 3 to 53 months after surgery. Ninety-eight percent were functionally stable. Mechanical stability was determined by talar tilt measurement on "stress roentgenographs". This was found to be a reliable predictor of degree of injury and postoperative symptomatology. Surgical repair in selected cases is recommended to assure mechanical and functional stability.

Proximal interphalangeal joint injuries and their initial treatment.

Many PIP joint injuries which appear to be innocuous are actually very severe injuries to this small hinged joint and carry a high percentage of disability for the hand as well as the individual digit. A flexion contracture of the PIP joint of one digit may significantly reduce the functional capacity of the entire hand. To prevent such physical impairment, the type of PIP joint injury must be defined and the proper treatment for the particular injury must be initiated. Second, it is paramount that prolonged immobilization of this joint be prevented. It has been found, through clinical experie

The quantitative evaluation of the use of oral proteolytic enzymes in the treatment of sprained ankles.

A double-blind trial was carried out on 50 patients with soft-tissue ankle injuries. The treated group was given proteolytic enzymes (Chymoral) by mouth while the untreated group was given enteric-coated lactose tablets. Both groups received identical supportive therapy for their injuries. No statistically significant difference in swelling, bruising and function between the 2 groups in the measurements of volume and allied parameters was found. No side effects were noted. The results suggest that the use of Chymoral in this type of injury is not indicated.

Pediatric bowling injuries presenting to U.S. emergency departments: a descriptive epidemiologic study.

OBJECTIVES: Bowling is a popular youth sport, but despite its popularity, there is limited research on pediatric bowling-related injuries. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to identify common injury locations and types among pediatric bowlers and assess differences in common injured body locations and diagnoses based on age and sex. METHODS: Data were sourced from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) for the period 2014-2023, focusing on individuals 18 years old or younger. The data sourced from NEISS are raw numbers of cases, not stratified/weighted data.

Epidemiology of Pediatric Lower-Extremity Injuries in the 5 Most Popular US Sports: A 10-Year Analysis of National Injury Data (2015-2024).

BACKGROUND: Sports injuries are a leading cause of pediatric emergency department (ED) visits in the United States (US), accounting for approximately 20% of all injury-related visits, with 41% requiring operation. Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and ice hockey are the 5 most popular US sports by viewership and participation, and pose a high risk of lower-extremity orthopedic injury. Despite increasing youth participation, previous studies have focused on a single sport or diagnosis, leaving limited population-level data to compare injury patterns across sports and sexes. PURPOSE: This

Emergency department visits secondary to amusement ride injuries in children.

BACKGROUND: Amusement rides are located not only in large amusement parks but also at local fairs and carnivals, in shopping malls, and at schools, and are even rented for private use. Millions of children in the United States participate in amusement rides annually. The amusement park industry has a vested interest in the safety of its equipment, and indeed, reports of severe injury or death are rare compared to the huge number of rides per year. Nonetheless, injuries severe enough to require an emergency department (ED) visit occur, and this study aims to quantify and describe those injuries

Examining the Prevalence of Sports-Related Injuries in Collegiate Baseball Players.

BACKGROUND: Sports-related injuries remain a significant problem for collegiate baseball players. Although some studies reported the epidemiology of sports-related injuries among collegiate baseball players, the latest information on sport-related injuries should be provided. PURPOSE: To examine the current trends of sports-related injuries among collegiate baseball players in the Pacific 12 (PAC-12) Conference. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: Demographic and injury data were obtained from a database of the PAC-12 Health Analytics Program between 2016 and 2021. Injury

Epidemiology of musculoskeletal injuries in Brazilian American football: associations with pre-activity routines, sleep, and mood.

American football is a high-intensity contact sport associated with substantial mechanical load and risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Despite its growing popularity in Brazil, epidemiological data remain limited. This study aimed to describe the injury profile and explore factors associated with injuries in Brazilian American football players. A cross-sectional study was conducted between August and October 2025 using a questionnaire on demographic, anthropometric, training, competition, sleep, mood, and risk factors. Sixty athletes participated, with 33 reporting injuries and a median of two

Diagnostic classification of patients with low back pain: report on a survey of physical therapy experts.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A survey of expert orthopedic physical therapists was conducted to assist in the development of a classification system for patients with low back pain (LBP). The goal of the survey was to measure levels of agreement on labels and accompanying constellations of signs and symptoms for subgroups of patients with LBP. SUBJECTS: Twenty-four of the 30 expert orthopedic physical therapists who were originally contacted responded to the survey request. METHODS: A modified Delphi technique was used. The first stage involved a review of the literature and identification of 25

In vivo cartilage contact strains in patients with lateral ankle instability.

Damage to the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and cacaneofibular ligament (CFL) during an ankle sprain may be linked to the development of osteoarthritis. Although altered tibiotalar kinematics have been demonstrated, the effects of lateral ankle instability (LAI) on in vivo cartilage strains have not been described. We hypothesized that peak cartilage strains increase, and the location is shifted in patients with ATFL injuries. We used 3-D MRI models and biplanar fluoroscopy to evaluate in vivo cartilage contact strains in seven patients with unilateral LAI. Subjects had chronic unilater

Caring for Wrestlers.

Wrestling is a popular high school and college sport with an injury and illness rate second only to football. It is important that the physician providing medical care for wrestlers be familiar with the unique characteristics of wrestling and the associated common injuries and medical problems. Common orthopedic injuries include shoulder, elbow, and finger dislocation; prepatellar bursitis; knee medial collateral ligament sprains; and cervical strains. Skin infections are the most common cause of missed mat time for wrestlers. Physicians need to be able to identify and treat these infections,
