UNLABELLED: Dental caries arise from intricate interactions among oral microorganisms, impacting ecological stability and disease progressio … a samples, marked by decreased diversity and elevated abundance of cariogenic species, particularly Streptococcus mutans. Candida albicans was notably more prevalent in the S-ECC group, implicating its potential role in pathogenesis. Iron and fluoride concentrations showed no significant correlation with microbial community structure. Network analyses uncovered comple …

Caries is a destructive condition caused by bacterial infection that affects the hard tissues of the teeth, significantly reducing the quali … rgistic antibacterial activities (>99%) against individual oral pathogens (Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus mutans, and Streptococcus sobrinus) and pathogen-induced biofilms. In vivo, CG-AgPB-mediated PTT demonstrated a capability to profoundly reduce the terminal number of cariogenic bacteria to below 1% in a rat model of caries. Given the outstanding biocompat …

Several cationic, mixed and amphoteric surfactants were tested for their antimicrobial activity and ability to inhibit the formation of in vitro plaque by oral microorganisms. All had antimicrobial activity against Actinomyces viscosus. Actinomyces naeslundii and Streptococcus mutans. Cationic surfactants were comparable to chlorhexidine in antimicrobial activity but were less effective in inhibiting plaque formation. Amphoteric surfactants were less effective than other detergents in antibacterial activity and had very limited capacity for the inhibition of plaque formation. Comparison of dru…

PURPOSE: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser delivered through a novel handpiece designed to provide a flat-top, homogeneous energy distribution profile (MarcoM handpiece) against key oral pathogens: Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Streptococcus mutans, in both planktonic and biofilm forms, in single- and dual-species cultures.
METHODS: Microorganisms were cultured individually and in dual-species combinations and irradiated using two irradiance settings (T1: 0.2 W/cm², T2: 0.6 W/cm²) corresponding to clinically established photobi…

BACKGROUND: The local pH change mediated by the pathogenic bacterial species Streptococcus mutans plays a significant role in the corrosion of hydroxyapatite (HA) present in the tooth in the dynamic oral cavity. The acid produced by the bacteria decreases the local pH and releases Ca2+ ions from the HA. We studied the bacteria-mediated demineralization of HA by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) after growing S. mutans biofilm on HA for 7 days.
RESULTS: We notably developed a triple-function SECM-compatible tip that could be positioned above the biofilm. It can also measure the pH and…

Objective: The present study aimed to analyze the biofilm removal and bactericidal effect of laser treatment alone and laser combined with ultrasonic scaling on orthodontic brackets. It also assessed whether the use of a laser can improve the efficiency of biofilm removal and bactericidal effect compared with traditional ultrasonic instrumentation. Background Data: Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) can lead to white spots and dental caries. Orthodontic brackets make teeth cleaning more difficult, and biofilms or bacteria on the surface of brackets worsen the oral environment, which may cause so…

A 54-year-old man was diagnosed with Streptococcus mutans endocarditis of the mitral valve. Serological tests disclosed the presence of multiple autoantibodies including c-ANCA, anti-PR3 and anti-MPO. While the fever subsided with antibiotics, mental status and renal function deteriorated rapidly. Kidney biopsy revealed pauci-immune glomerulonephritis and acute eosinophilic interstitial nephritis. The abnormal clinical features improved rapidly after addition of corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide to the antibiotics. Immunosuppressive agents may be required in a fraction of the patients with …

High sugar intake in modern dietary patterns heightens the risk of dental caries, yet current preventives neither address dietary sugars nor effectively inhibit cariogenic biofilms. Herein, we introduce a fully biomass-derived enzyme-polyphenol 'tooth nanoarmor' that self-assembles from glucose oxidase (GOx) and ellagic acid, a natural phenolic molecule found in pomegranate peels and tree bark. Noncovalent interactions mediate the self-assembly, yielding a porous supramolecular phenolic framework, with nanochannels exhibiting remarkable bioadhesion and biostability. Adhering to tooth enamel, t

Dental caries, a globally prevalent chronic infectious disease, is driven by microbial dysbiosis of dental biofilm, involving multiple caries-associated colonizers. Conventional broad-spectrum antimicrobials and fluoride-based formulations often disrupt the commensal oral microbiota, contributing to antimicrobial resistance and imbalance of the oral ecosystem. In contrast, bacteriophage (phage) therapy has emerged as a promising precision strategy for caries control due to its high specificity, minimal off-target effects, and biofilm-disrupting capacity. Our review systematically summarizes re
