Comparative Biophysical Analysis of Healthy and Inflamed Intestinal Membrane Models Using Langmuir Monolayers.

Intestinal inflammation, including Crohn's disease, represents a chronic condition that increases the risk of colon cancer and involves complications from long-term pharmacotherapy. Since drugs must pass through lipid bilayers to reach their targets, understanding the surface properties of biological membranes is crucial. In this study, the Langmuir technique and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) were employed to characterize simplified models of healthy and inflamed intestinal cell membranes. Both the outer and inner leaflets of the lipid bilayer were modeled to investigate how inflammation-ind…

Divergent interfacial mineralization pathways on hydrophilic intraocular lenses driven by pathological microenvironments.

Late-onset optical opacification caused by calcium phosphate deposition is the primary failure mode of hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs). Clinical evidence suggests that the extent and pattern of calcification vary significantly among patients, particularly those with different systemic diseases. However, the mechanistic role of systemic pathologies in driving heterogeneous calcification remains unclear. Herein, we investigate the interfacial mineralization mechanisms of opacified IOLs using multiscale physicochemical characterization, focusing on patients with hypertension (HTN),

Comparative study of polymeric nanoparticles and traditional agents in dental implant decontamination.

Peri-implant diseases, such as peri-implantitis, affect up to 47% of dental implant recipients, primarily due to biofilm formation. Current decontamination methods vary in efficacy, prompting interest in polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) for their antimicrobial and protein-specific cleaning properties. This study evaluated the efficacy of polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) in decontaminating titanium dental implants by removing proteinaceous pellicle layers and resisting recontamination. Titanium discs were treated with saline water, PrefGel®, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), GUM® Paroex®, or polymeric NPs, a

The effect of different glass ionomer cements and surface coating applications on fluoride release and microhardness values.

BACKGROUND: The glass-ionomer cements have many advantages such as the ability to form chemical bonding at the tooth-restoration interface, release and recharge of fluoride, low cytotoxicity and high biocompatibility. But their low mechanical properties and susceptibility to moisture contamination during hardening limit their usage the regions exposed to high stress. The surface coatings used to protect the physical and mechanical properties of the material reduce fluoride release. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of different glass-ionomer cements and surface coatings on flu

Multifunctional antibiofilm materials: surface engineering and nanotherapeutic strategies for biofilm prevention and eradication.

Bacterial biofilms, as structured microbial communities embedded within self-produced extracellular polymeric substances, present formidable challenges in clinical and healthcare environments due to their intrinsic resistance to antimicrobial treatments and ability to evade host immune responses. Addressing these resilient structures requires the development of advanced antibiofilm materials through multifunctional approaches. This review conducts a comprehensive examination of contemporary antibiofilm strategies, structured around two primary objectives: biofilm formation prevention and estab

The effect of surface roughness on the Er:YAG laser-induced photoacoustic removal of bacteria in zero-gap periodontal/peri-implant pocket model.

Effective biofilm removal from periodontal and peri-implant pockets remains a challenge due to constrained geometry and limited access. This study investigates a novel phenomenon of distant-field cleaning utilizing Er:YAG laser treatment, where removal of bacteria occurs in areas without previously observed cavitation under high-speed imaging. To understand this effect, we developed a transparent zero-gap model simulating a tooth or implant and surrounding soft tissue. We systematically examined the impact of laser fiber insertion depth, cavitation bubble dynamics, the stiffness and roughness

Stable Air Plastron Prolongs Biofluid Repellency of Submerged Superhydrophobic Surfaces.

Superhydrophobic surfaces find applications in numerous biomedical scenarios, requiring the repellence of biofluids and biomolecules. Plastron, the trapped air between a superhydrophobic surface and a wetting liquid, plays a pivotal role in biofluid repellency. A key challenge, however, is the often short-lived plastron stability in biofluids and the lack of knowledge surrounding it. Plastron stability refers to the duration for which a surface remains in the Cassie state before transitioning to the fully wetting Wenzel state. Here, a submersion test with real-time optical monitoring is used t

Effect of diffusion in the model tissue on biocorrosion of Mg alloys.

Current in vitro test fails in predicting the in vivo corrosion behaviour of Mg and its alloys. The diffusion of ions and gases through the tissue remains the critical factor influencing the discrepancy between the in vitro and in vivo corrosion rates. To overcome this, the in vitro model tissue with different diffusion rate was developed by the addition of appropriate concentrations of a thickener to the cell culture medium. The corrosion behaviour of WE43 and AZ31 alloys were analysed by immersion studies up to 28 days, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization

Sterilization of Stainless-Steel Surfaces Using Ultraviolet Radiation Produced by Light-Emitting Diodes.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that ultraviolet radiation in the C wavelength range produced by light-emitting diodes (UVC-LEDs) is effective for disinfection (i.e., inactivation of vegetative bacteria and viruses). However, there are few efficacy data available to confirm its use as a sterilization technique (complete inactivation of bacterial spores). The present study evaluated the use of UVC-LED to achieve the sterilization of stainless-steel surfaces as a function of UVC dose and several other variables. Spores of Bacillus atrophaeus and two strains of Bacillus pumilus were used as in

Steel surface defect detection is an important application of object detection in industry. Achieving object detection in industry while balancing detection accuracy and real-time performance is a challenge. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved FasterNet-YOLO model based on the one-stage detector. Introduce the FasterNet network to reconstruct the YOLOv5 backbone network. Achievement of model lightweighting and significant improvement in detection speed, but with a slight reduction in accuracy. The YOLOv5 neck network's ordinary convolution is improved by depthwise separable convolution.

Controlling the stability of monodisperse phospholipid-coated microbubbles by tuning their buckling pressure.

HYPOTHESIS: Monodisperse phospholipid-coated microbubbles, with a size and resonance frequency tuned to the ultrasound driving frequency, have strong potential to enhance sensitivity, efficiency, and control in emerging diagnostic and therapeutic applications involving bubbles and ultrasound. A key requirement is that they retain their gas volume and shell material during physiologic pressure changes and withstand the overpressure during intravenous injection. The shell typically comprises a mixture of a phospholipid (e.g., DSPC) mixed with a PEGylated phospholipid (e.g., DPPE-PEG5000). We hyp

Facile Surface Modification of Apatite Nanoparticles for Tailoring Protein Adsorption toward Nano-Bio Interfacial Engineering.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles have been widely used as bone-filling materials because of their excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. However, they exhibit limited osteoinductivity and induce slight blood coagulation. To address these issues, it is essential to control the underlying biological phenomenon (i.e., mediative protein states), particularly the adsorption states of fibronectin (Fn) and fibrinogen (Fg) on the HA nanoparticles. In this study, we aimed to endow the HA nanoparticles with both osteoinductive and antithrombotic properties through their surface modification

Evaluating the impact of chaotropic salts on protein corona formation on polyethylene glycol-b-polylactic acid polymersomes.

Polymersomes (PS) are a class of hollow polymeric nanoparticle vesicles made of amphiphilic block co-polymers that self-assemble via hydrophobic interactions. One of the significant unsung challenges for their translation is the uncontrolled formation of the protein corona, which can influence PS biodistribution, cellular uptake, and immune recognition. Despite the major benefits associated with PS, no studies have yet explored engineering their protein corona. Evidence suggests that the confirmation of polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains, which can vary in response to Hofmeister series salts, ca

A Printable Deep Eutectic/Copper Conductive Colloid for Wearable Devices.

The advancement of wearable electronics has placed higher demands on the comfort and convenience of flexible materials. In this work, a conductive pseudoplastic colloid was developed by utilizing the oxygen elements adsorbed on the surface of copper powder, which forms donor-acceptor interactions with the hydrogen bond donors in a deep eutectic solvent. The flakelike copper powder, serving as a conductive filler, provides more efficient spatial conductive pathways and further enhances the cross-linking ability between the copper powder and the deep eutectic solvent. The resulting deep eutectic
