The Reconstructive Burden of E-Scooter Injuries: Risk Factors, Injury Patterns, and Surgical Implications From a Plastic Surgery Series.

INTRODUCTION: Electric scooter (e-scooter) use is popular, and there is an increase in related injuries. Our aim was to characterize facial injury patterns, surgical management, and modifiable risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted, reviewing all e-scooter-related injury presentations between 2017 and 2025. Patients with life-threatening injuries were excluded. Data collected included demographics, details regarding the e-scooter use and accident, injury pattern, treatment modality, and hospitalization. RESULTS: A total of 105 patients were included, who were predom

Protocol for a prospective single-arm feasibility study of suzetrigine for postoperative pain management in outpatient facial plastic surgery.

Despite relatively brief postoperative pain courses and well-established risks of adverse effects and dependency, opioid analgesics remain routinely prescribed following outpatient facial plastic surgery. Suzetrigine (Journavx) is a first-in-class, oral, non-opioid analgesic that selectively inhibits the voltage-gated sodium channel 1.8 (NaV1.8), a peripheral nociceptive pathway target that may avoid central nervous system adverse effects associated with opioids. While suzetrigine has demonstrated efficacy in phase III trials of acute postoperative pain, its use in facial plastic surgery has n

Framework for Establishing a Specialized Biobank and Digital Information Platform for Skin-on-a-Chip Research in Plastic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: High-quality primary cells and well-annotated clinical data are essential for reproducible skin-on-a-chip (SoC) research. However, conventional biobanking workflows often lack SoC-oriented procedures for specimen acquisition, live-cell preservation, quality control, and traceability. METHODS: We established a specialized plastic surgery biobank incorporating standardized tissue procurement, cold-chain transport at 2°C-8°C with processing initiated within 2-6 hours, hierarchical preservation of tissues and live cells, and a unique identifier (UID)-linked multimodal digital platform

Impact of Penicillin Allergy on Antibiotic Prophylaxis Selection and Surgical Site Infection Rates in Plastic Surgery: A Systematic Review.

Background: Patients undergoing plastic and reconstructive procedures with penicillin allergies (PAs) often receive second-line antibiotic agents. Evidence from other surgical specialties suggests this can lead to increased complications and greater morbidity. However, limited research exists in plastic surgery regarding this issue. This systematic review consolidates existing literature on the impact of PAs and alternative antibiotic agent use in plastic surgery, highlighting findings and future research directions. Methods: A systematic search of SCOPUS, PubMed (including MEDLINE), EMBASE, a

Perioperative Management of Antithrombotic Therapy in Patients Undergoing Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: A Practical Tool Based on Current Guidelines.

Introduction: Given the aging population, plastic surgeons are increasingly faced with the challenge of balancing procedural bleeding risk with thromboembolic risk in patients receiving antithrombotic therapies undergoing elective procedures. Guideline recommendations remain unclear in this population, which contributes to heterogeneity in clinical practices. We present a practical approach that summarizes guideline recommendations to facilitate the perioperative management of patients requiring surgery who are already on antithrombotic agents. Methods: Due to the scarcity of plastic surgery-s

Impact of COVID-19 on facial plastic surgery volumes: A large database analysis of pre- and post-pandemic trends.

OBJECTIVE: During the COVID-19 pandemic, elective surgeries faced cancelations due to quarantine measures. The objective of this study was to assess facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS) volume before, during, and after the height of the pandemic on a national scale. METHODS: The TriNetX Research Network identified 68,101,098 individuals aged 18+ with healthcare interactions from 2017 to 2022. Rates of common FPRS surgeries and procedures were compared during March-August of each year, aligning with the pandemic lockdown. RESULTS: Compared to immediately before the pandemic in 201

Clinical Outcomes of Inside Stents and Conventional Plastic Stents as Bridge-to-Surgery Options for Malignant Hilar Biliary Obstruction.

BACKGROUND: The appropriate method of preoperative endoscopic biliary drainage (EBD) for cholangiocarcinoma with hilar biliary obstruction remains controversial. The inside-stent technique is a method of placing plastic stents entirely inside the bile duct. Several studies of patients with unresectable stage have reported longer stent patency compared with conventional endoscopic biliary stenting (EBS). Inside-stent techniques have been introduced as a bridge-to-surgery option and as an alternative to conventional EBS. AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of inside stent use and c

Perspectives From a Regional Plastic Surgery Centre on Evidence for the Purported Link Between SGLT2 Inhibitors and Fournier's Gangrene.

Introduction: The recent report issued by the MHRA indicating an association of Sodium glucose linked transporter type 2 (SGLT2) Inhibitors with the contraction of Fournier's Gangrene (FG), has been drawn with insufficient supporting evidence and without an adequately powered study to make any meaningful assertions or recommendations. We aimed to look specifically at the currently available dataset used to link SGLT2 Inhibitors to FG and highlight what conclusions or inferences can meaningfully be made, in particular the power of any study that would be required to make sensible conclusions. How many people work in your operating room? An assessment of factors associated with instrument recounts within plastic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative instrument recounts are performed to avoid retained foreign surgical items. These additional counts, however, beget risks of their own, including prolonged operative times, exposure to radiation, and increased cost. Our study aimed to identify factors that increase the likelihood of instrument recounts during plastic surgery procedures, and use our findings to guide potential solutions for preventing unnecessary recounts across all surgical fields. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective review of all plastic surgical cases in the main operating setting at New York Un

[Pedicle flap plastic surgery in the primary care of large skin and soft tissue defects of the upper extremity].

Pedicle flaps from the chest or abdomen are still most suitable to cover large skin and soft tissue defects on the upper extremity. Compared to free tissue transfer with microvascular anastomosis, the conventional techniques ave advantages with regard to size, technical execution, technical differentiation and rate of healing in. Every skin and soft tissue defect on the upper extremity, however large it is, can be primarily treated by means of a pedicle flap.

Antibiotic-Loaded Calcium Sulphate Beads in Wound Management: A Scoping Review of Emerging Applications in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Calcium sulphate (CS) is a fully synthetic, sterile, bioabsorbable biomaterial extensively applied for the management of infected tissues and postoperative dead spaces resulting from surgical interventions. Residual DS may facilitate hematoma accumulation and bacterial colonisation, thereby heightening the risk of surgical-site infections. Within orthopaedic surgery, CS has been predominantly evaluated as a bone-void filler and an off-label antibiotic delivery vehicle-particularly in arthroplasty revisions, chronic osteomyelitis, and open fractures-yielding high rates of infection prophylaxis,

General anesthesia management for oral surgery in a patient with plastic bronchitis associated with Fontan circulation: a case report.

Plastic bronchitis is a rare condition in which mucus plugs obstruct the bronchi, potentially leading to fatal respiratory failure. It has been reported in some patients with congenital heart disease following Fontan surgery. We report the general anesthesia management of a 22-year-old female patient with Fontan circulation and type II plastic bronchitis that was controlled using regular intravenous heparin injections. In this case, concerns existed regarding airway obstruction by bronchial plugs and hemodynamic instability specific to the Fontan circulation. During endotracheal intubation, th
